We examine the symbolic management of participative strategic decision-making programs that purportedly use crowdsourcing technology to solicit strategic input below the executive suite, but are often decoupled from actual strategic decision making. Specifically, top management may decide on a strategic option before soliciting input under the program. The first portion of our theoretical framework explains why disclosure of a participative strategic decision making program in communicating with security analysts is associated with more positive analyst appraisals, despite decoupling, and why the benefits of disclosure are amplified to the extent that leaders highlight the use of crowdsourcing technology in the program. The second portion of our framework addresses the antecedents of symbolic adoption. We suggest that firms are more likely to adopt and decouple a program when the CEO has a personal friendship tie to the CEO of another firm that has adopted and decoupled, especially following relatively negative analyst appraisals. Analysis of a unique dataset that includes longitudinal survey data from executives supported our predictions.

Introduction:The use of multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) in health technology assessment (HTA) studies has become more common due to the fact that MCDA offers a comprehensive technique for decisions that involve multiple criteria and stakeholders. How MCDA contributes to the HTA decision making process is an issue to be investigated. A systematic review was carried out in order to provide an overview of the benefits identified in MCDA applications for the strategic HTA decision making process.Methods:A systematic review developed by Philip Wahlster et al. (2014) was updated. The papers were analyzed in order to determine how MCDA is connected with traditional HTA, and to identify opportunities through the application of MCDA. In total 965 papers were found, and 43 articles were included in the review. The included articles detailed MCDA applications oriented to tactical and strategic decision making processes. The review was conducted by two researchers.Results:Of the available studies published on MCDA, 76 percent were published between 2014 and 2017, and 24 percent were published prior to 2014. Regarding the MCDA methodology defined in the included studies, 10 used the analytical hierarchy process, four used multi-attribute theory, and others refer the methodology only as “MCDA”. Seventeen studies also included health technology economic analysis, in special cost-effectiveness, safety and technological innovation. The studies suggest MCDA adds value since it allows different stakeholders to be engaged in the decision making process.Conclusions:The increase in studies on MCDA and healthcare point to the possibility to add different criteria, engage people with different knowledge levels, and make the decision-making process more transparent. In comparison with other technical areas, the use of MCDA in healthcare is more focused on achieving the decision about adding the new technology, and to show how to engage stakeholders than to explain how to develop the algorithms and methodologies.

Design frequently involves making tradeoffs to obtain the “optimal” solution to a design problem, often using intuition or past experience as a guide. Since vegetated roofing is a relatively complex and comparatively new technology to many practitioners, a rational, explicit method to help organize and rank the tradeoffs made during the design process is needed. This research comprises the creation of a framework diagramming the decision process involved in the selection of vegetated roofing systems. Through literature review, case studies and interviews with experts, the available knowledge is captured and organized to determine the critical parameters affecting design decisions. Six important evaluative categories are identified and parameters within these categories are addressed in the context of a decision support system for green roof designers. A summation of the total importance of the advantages represented by each alternative is used to determine the most feasible green roof system for a particular project. The framework is demonstrated and compared with green roof designers' decision-making processes and conclusions are drawn regarding its effectiveness.

AbstractThis paper proposes an analytical framework for estimating the domain where a type of technology can be used in a system. In order to achieve this aim, we have elaborated on the concepts of technology critical, technology sensitive, and the technology comfort zone, to analytically assess the impact of a new technology in the early phases of system design. The result is a general method to indicate the range of requirements that can result in valid designs. This tool can assist in the decision-making processes for technology portfolio selection based on sustainable principles.

Abstract Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is still a relatively new technology for many manufacturing and logistics companies. These companies experience uncertainties about RFID implementation, so they take steps to mitigate them. This article presents multiple case studies to design a conceptual framework to mitigate such barriers. The goal of this research was to test propositions that companies: often are not convinced about the maturity and performance of RFID technology; perform typical actions to test uncertainties; and need proof of the benefits of RFID technology before implementation. It was demonstrated that companies conduct proof of RFID technology activities (demonstrations and reference visits) to test RFID performance. These are required to test the technology in operation. Conclusions of this research may serve RFID systems providers and end users of technology by facilitating a better understanding of decision making processes during early phases of RFID implementation.

Purpose The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the social and cognitive underpinnings of miscommunication during an interactive listening task. Method An eye and computer mouse–tracking visual-world paradigm was used to investigate how a listener's cognitive effort (local and global) and decision-making processes were affected by a speaker's use of ambiguity that led to a miscommunication. Results Experiments 1 and 2 found that an environmental cue that made a miscommunication more or less salient impacted listener language processing effort (eye-tracking). Experiment 2 also indicated that listeners may develop different processing heuristics dependent upon the speaker's use of ambiguity that led to a miscommunication, exerting a significant impact on cognition and decision making. We also found that perspective-taking effort and decision-making complexity metrics (computer mouse tracking) predict language processing effort, indicating that instances of miscommunication produced cognitive consequences of indecision, thinking, and cognitive pull. Conclusion Together, these results indicate that listeners behave both reciprocally and adaptively when miscommunications occur, but the way they respond is largely dependent upon the type of ambiguity and how often it is produced by the speaker.

Purpose The purpose of this investigation was to understand the decision-making processes used by parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) related to communication-based interventions. Method Qualitative interview methodology was used. Data were gathered through interviews. Each parent had a child with ASD who was at least four-years-old; lived with their child with ASD; had a child with ASD without functional speech for communication; and used at least two different communication interventions. Results Parents considered several sources of information for learning about interventions and provided various reasons to initiate and discontinue a communication intervention. Parents also discussed challenges introduced once opinions of the school individualized education program (IEP) team had to be considered. Conclusions Parents of children with ASD primarily use individual decision-making processes to select interventions. This discrepancy speaks to the need for parents and professionals to share a common “language” about interventions and the decision-making process.
