In this article an attempt is made to establish a framework within which one can define or describe Symbolism as a literary phenomenon. As is the case with most literary movements one cannot reach a final definition or conclusion on Symbolism because it has many manifestations in different countries with different literary artists - so many men, so many minds. It is, however, possible to identify some common trends in the works of many symbolist poets and prose-writers. These trends are outlined in this article. The following also serves as an introduction to a special issue of Literator on Symbolism and its occurrence in the literary works of D.J. Opperman, Totius, N.P. van Wyk Louw and other Afrikaans literary artists. This special issue forms part of a comprehensive investigation into the incidence of Symbolism in the Afrikaans literary tradition undertaken by the Departement Afrikaans-Nederlands of the PU for CHE under the supervision of prof. D.H. Steenberg and with financial assistance of the Human Sciences Research Council.

A measure of safety climate was developed to aid management in identifying safety problems and responding proactively to safety issues; to assess the general mood of the workforce to safety; and as a standard for comparison with other organizations. The measure of safety climate was based on items extracted from the Chamber of Mines "Loss Control" audit manual. Reliability analysis performed on the scale indicated consistently high reliability coefficients across three ethnic groups. Factor analysis gave support for the construct validity of the scale. Opsomming 'n Meting vir veiligheidsklimaat is ontwikkel ten einde bestuur in staat te stel om veiligheidsprobleme te identifiseer en om pro-aktiefop te tree; om die algemene gevoel van die werkskragte rakende veiligheid te bepaal en om 'n maatstaf vir vergelyking met ander organisasies daar te stel. 'n Betroubaarheidssanalise wat op die skaal uitgevoer is het daarop gedui dat daar konsekwent hoe betroubaarheidskoefisiënte vir drie etniese groepe verkry word. It gives me great pleasure to present the second issue of our fledgling journal, JOVACET, an early 2019 publication. This special issue celebrates a successful conference held in November 2018 in Cape Town and attended by a range of local and international academics. The conference was hosted by the Adult Education Studies Unit of our UWC Institute for Post-School Studies, under the rubric, Access, barriers to participation and success for adult learners: Rethinking equity and social justice in post-school education. It was opened with a thought-provoking address by our keynote speaker, Prof. Crain Soudien, Chief Executive Officer of the Human Sciences Research Council.

Books have long been recognized  resources for health literacy and healing (Fosson & Husband, 1984). Individuals with health conditions or disabilities or who are dealing with illness, disability or death among friends or loved ones, can find solace and affirmation in fictional works that depict characters coping with similar health conditions. This study asked the question “If we were to select a new collection of children’s health-related fiction in mid-2014, which books would we select and what selection criteria would we apply?”  The results of this study are a set of criteria for the selection of  current English language literary works with health-related content for the pre-kindergarten to Grade 6 (age 12) audience http://hdl.handle.net/10402/era.38842, a collection of books that are readily available to Canadian libraries - selected against these criteria http://hdl.handle.net/10402/era.38843, a special issue of the Deakin Review of Children’s Literature -  dedicated to juvenile health fiction, and book exhibits in two libraries to accompany the Deakin Review issue.

This chapter studies the interrelation of history-writing and literary culture. It considers the function of history-writing within the context of Hellenistic literary culture, as historiography at the time can be seen as a literary phenomenon. History-writing represents a substantial contribution to ancient literature; it circulates within the sphere of the ancient literary canon. Chronologically speaking, Mark and Luke follow in the literary tradition set by the earliest in Western history-writing, yet literary tradition among the earliest Christian authors also differs from the Greco-Roman world. Where historiographical topics and concepts vary significantly from one author to the next, in Mark and Luke, the subject of the narrative, namely, the gospel, remains surprisingly constant.

Paradigms and progress in theology: A perspective on the HRSC conference of April 1988 The title refers to a conference believed to be the first interdisciplinary meeting on said theme in South Africa held under the auspices of the South African Human Sciences Research Council in Pretoria last year. Future developments in this field may prove it a major happening in South African theology and methodology yet. An anthology of selected papers read appeared from the press recently. This article contains a number of abstracts made from the book and brief discussions of papers thus abstracted. A basic hesitancy pertaining to the meaning and encompass of the concept ‘paradigm’ as well as a widespread uncertainty regarding theology’s accountability towards science are noted. Fears of dimensional reduction are expressed.
