Previous literature demonstrated that people spontaneously engage in systematic ways of thinking about biology. However, with most studies focusing on the western population, little is known about the universal nature of these cognitive frameworks. The current study used a construal-based survey to systematically test intuitive biology thinking in China. Overall, Chinese 8th graders demonstrated stronger essentialist thinking, weaker anthropocentric thinking, and similar level of teleological thinking compared to the US counterparts.

Abstract Background Benefit of carboplatin and dose-dense weekly paclitaxel (ddCT) in first line treatment of ovarian cancer patients has been different in Western and Asian studies. In the present study we compare progression-free survival (PFS) of ddCT to three-weekly carboplatin and paclitaxel (CT) in first-line treatment of ovarian carcinoma in a single institution in a Western population. Materials and methods We conducted a retrospective review of medical records from patients with ovarian carcinoma treated in a tertiary cancer center from 2007 to 2018. All patients treated with ddCT or CT in the first-line setting were included. Patients who received first-line bevacizumab were not included. PFS and overall survival (OS) were compared in a propensity score-matched cohort to address selection bias. Patients were matched according to age, ECOG performance status, CA 125, FIGO stage, residual disease, and histological subtype, in a 1:2 ratio. Results Five hundred eighty-eight patients were eligible for propensity score matching, the final cohort consisted of 69 patients treated with ddCT and 138 CT group. Baseline characteristics were well-balanced. After a median follow-up of 65.1 months, median PFS was 29.3 vs 20.0 months, favouring ddCT treatment (p = 0.035). In the multivariate cox regression ddCT showed a 18% lower risk of progression (HR 0.82, 95% CI 0.68–0.99, p = 0.04). Overall survival data is immature, but suggested better outcomes for ddCT (not reached versus 78.8 months; p = 0.07). Conclusion Our retrospective study has shown superior PFS of ddCT over CT regimen in first-line treatment of ovarian carcinoma in a Western population not treated with bevacizumab.

Height, weight, and skinfold measurements were obtained on a cohort of 447 children from birth (weight) or 6 months of age (height and skinfold) and monitored yearly thereafter until 7 years of age. At age 7 years, 250 remained for follow-up screening. A significant degree of tracking was found for all variables from age 1 to age 7 years. Height and weight tracked most strongly (age 1- to 7-year correlations = .42 and .44, respectively), whereas skinfold tracked somewhat lower (.28). Earlier levels of each anthropometric variable were the best predictor of later levels of that parameter. Implications for early detection and treatment of growth abnormalities are discussed.

Abstract Background To investigate the incidence and prognostication of ERG, PTEN and SPINK1 protein expressions in prostate cancer cohort of Middle Eastern descent in comparison to published data from Western populationMethods Immunohistochemistry for ERG, PTEN and SPINK1 was performed in cohort of localized PCa (n=340). Data correlated to pathological and clinical outcomes and compared to Western populations. Results ERG expression and PTEN loss noted in 123/288 (42.7%) and 91/297 (30.6%) of patients, respectively. SPINK1 expression assessed in subset of cases, noted in 6/150 (4%) of patients. Only ERG expression was associated with grade groups, being more common in lower grade groups (1-3 vs 4-5; p=0.04). In contrast to Western population, PTEN loss foci were more likely to be ERG negative, observed in 81% of tumor foci and patients with PTEN neg/ERG pos were more likely to exhibit biochemical recurrence (OR 2.831; 95% CI: 1.10-726, p=0.03). This association remained significant in multivariate analysis (OR 2.68; 95% CI: 0.98-7.33, p=0.05), after adjusting for GG, path stage and surgical margin. Conclusion This study documents significant differences in key molecular events in PCa in Middle Eastern population compared to Western populations that could explain differences in PCa incidence, progression and prognostication. ERG, PTEN and SPINK1 genomic alteration occur less frequently and the enrichment of ERG for PTEN loss is not observed. Additionally, patients with combined PTEN loss/ERG positive are at highest rate for BCR vs North American Caucasian population where PTEN loss alone seems to be associated with the worst clinical outcome. The data presented here further support differences in clonal evolution between Middle Eastern and Western population in relation to PCa and add further insight to understanding PCa molecular pathways.
