How to Play XML: Markup Technologies as Nomic Game

What is a “game”? A definition is famously difficult. Wittgenstein, for example, after having described language as a game in his Philosophical Investigations, goes on to ask what a game is and how we know what's a game, using the word (“Spiel” in German) as a vivid example of the provisional and contingent nature of the supposedly clear concepts communicated by language. Game theory, a branch of mathematics, solves this question by avoiding it, providing its own definition of “game”, which only partially fits many or most games as we know them. And talking about games becomes really interesting when we reflect, as is inescapable since Peter Suber coined the term “nomic game” in 1982, that part of the action of many games, and indeed the essence of some, is in the process, play or competition of providing the game itself with its rules and hence its definition. Originally developed in reference to legislative systems as an illustration of “a game of self-amendment”, Suber's rule set for the game “Nomic” quickly took on a life of its own and spawned a small thought industry among gamers and philosophers, implicating economics, sociology and anthropology, life sciences, psychology and politics. Markup technologies such as HTML, XML and everything that goes with them, from schemas to processing languages to public specifications and standards, have many gamelike aspects. We have players, equipment, and opportunities to compete and cooperate. When applications work as well as or better than planned, there are victories. When projects fail or initiatives collapse, there are defeats. As in many games, much of the activity of markup technologies is devoted to rules enforcement; it also, in nomic fashion, extends to breaking received rules and making new ones. (Illustrations and examples are offered at micro and macro levels.) An engagement with markup technologies, or with any media production or software application design that relies on them, demands tactics and strategy, presenting us with problems and tradeoffs enmeshed in complexities both on and off the board, and challenging us to decide not only how we play, but what game we wish to be playing. And the deeper we go, the more nomic it gets. As we ponder what we are doing with markup technologies and how they are changing what else we do – as technologists, publishers, scholars, teachers, and creative producers – it is well if we reflect on who is making the rules and how; for whose benefit; whether, when, to what extent and how we should follow their rules or make our own; and finally how the rules we make about the games we play can have far-reaching effects even beyond the game we thought we were playing.

The term ultimate resolution or resolving power is the very best performance that can be obtained from a scanning electron microscope (SEM) given the optimum instrumental conditions and sample. However, as it relates to SEM users, the conventional definitions of this figure are ambiguous. The numbers quoted for the resolution of an instrument are not only theoretically derived, but are also verified through the direct measurement of images on micrographs. However, the samples commonly used for this purpose are specifically optimized for the measurement of instrument resolution and are most often not typical of the sample used in practical applications.SEM RESOLUTION. Some instruments resolve better than others either due to engineering design or other reasons. There is no definitively accurate definition of how to quantify instrument resolution and its measurement in the SEM.

Another key chapter, examining reactions in solution. Starting with the definition of an ideal solution, and then introducing Raoult’s law and Henry’s law, this chapter then draws on the results of Chapter 14 (gas phase equilibria) to derive the corresponding results for equilibria in an ideal solution. A unique feature of this chapter is the analysis of coupled reactions, once again using first principles to show how the coupling of an endergonic reaction to a suitable exergonic reaction results in an equilibrium mixture in which the products of the endergonic reaction are present in much higher quantity. This demonstrates how coupled reactions can cause entropy-reducing events to take place without breaking the Second Law, so setting the scene for the future chapters on applications of thermodynamics to the life sciences, especially chapter 24 on bioenergetics.

In this scientific article the main elements of game theory are analyzed, the achievements of domestic and foreign scientists devoted to the consideration of such theory are investigated. The expediency of involving in the practical activity of the civil service in the system of judicial authorities effective methods used in the field of business and consisting in the use of game technologies, which have proven their effectiveness in terms of providing quality services. It is focused on the fact that game theory can play a key role in the decision-making process, however, it is important to strictly adhere to the limits of its application. Possible conflict situations in the work of civil servants of the justice system are formulated and it is investigated that in conflict conditions each so-called participant of the game makes his course, i.e. chooses his strategy, as a result of which the relevant conflict situation is outlined and a set of strategies of all players. Some examples of the use of elements of game theory are given and the content of certain types of strategies is revealed. In particular, a strategy is described, which is denoted by the term "screening". Taking into account the definition of ways to modernize the civil service, the need to include in standardized training programs for civil servants of the justice system category "B" training course, which will include the basic principles of game theory for their active use in conflict, skills to compromise in relationships with visitors to the court - recipients of court services, selection of the right strategy, consideration of theoretical and game modeling of personnel management tasks, focusing on the ability to obtain and timely provide the necessary information to create a new civil service in the judiciary that meets international standards.

ABSTRACT: In Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations the notion of a 'language game' gives human communication a regained flexibility. Contrary to the Tractatus, the ethical domain now composes one language game among others, being expressed in various types of sentences such as moral judgments, imperatives and praises, and being shared in activity by a human form of life. The aim of this paper is to show that the same moves that allow for a moral language game are the ones allowing for learning and teaching about the moral living, where persuasion takes the place of argument by means of a plural appeal. For this purpose, literature would seem to be one of the best tools at our disposal. As a way of exemplifying our moral engagement to literature I proceed at last to a brief analysis of Tolstoy's Father Sergius, to show how playing this game would help us accomplish this pedagogical enterprise.

Abstract. We have designed an orthogonal curvilinear terrain-following coordinate (the orthogonal σ coordinate, or the OS coordinate) to reduce the advection errors in the classic σ coordinate. First, we rotate the basis vectors of the z coordinate in a specific way in order to obtain the orthogonal, terrain-following basis vectors of the OS coordinate, and then add a rotation parameter b to each rotation angle to create the smoother vertical levels of the OS coordinate with increasing height. Second, we solve the corresponding definition of each OS coordinate through its basis vectors; and then solve the 3-D coordinate surfaces of the OS coordinate numerically, therefore the computational grids created by the OS coordinate are not exactly orthogonal and its orthogonality is dependent on the accuracy of a numerical method. Third, through choosing a proper b, we can significantly smooth the vertical levels of the OS coordinate over a steep terrain, and, more importantly, we can create the orthogonal, terrain-following computational grids in the vertical through the orthogonal basis vectors of the OS coordinate, which can reduce the advection errors better than the corresponding hybrid σ coordinate. However, the convergence of the grid lines in the OS coordinate over orography restricts the time step and increases the numerical errors. We demonstrate the advantages and the drawbacks of the OS coordinate relative to the hybrid σ coordinate using two sets of 2-D linear advection experiments.

The Bresenham- and </div><div>midpoint IPO's are non-constant speed reference pulse IPO's with bounded inaccuracy.</div><div>By adding an ultra-fast 3-lines algorithm "PRM-cs" to the actual midpoint or Bresenham algorithms, </div><div>we convert these midpoint-ipo's to very fast, constant speed, reference pulse IPO's. </div><div>This applies to 2D-lines, 3D-lines, 2D-curves and 2D-NURBS.</div><div>The PRM-cs measures, in real-time, the length of the discrete curve and the PRM-cs is completely new. </div><div>We define the best IPO, the major axis principle and the LSD-priority. </div><div>The major axis principle holds for the actual 3D-line IPO's. These IPO's are, generally, inaccurate, </div><div>but they can be updated to constant speed 3D-line IPO's, when the production manager agrees.</div><div>The Digital Geometric Geometry (DAG) defines the discrete lines globally, but this global </div><div>definition of a discrete 3D-line, gives discrete 3D-lines whose accuracy is much less than the </div><div>accuracy of the best discrete 3D-lines (e.g. 37% worse).</div><div>We describe the three causes of the inaccurate (imperfect) discrete 3D-lines. </div><div>All existing pulse-rate or PRM-ipo's use a wrong initialization, which deteriorates the accuracy. </div><div>We determine the right initialization for the new PRM-cs and the updated PRM-ipo. </div><div>We propose the benchmark-ipo "listSIM-ipo". This constant speed IPO can, also, be used in real-</div><div>time for every 2D- and 3D-curve. </div><div>The 3rd-degree Trident NURB shows that the constant speed reference pulse method is much </div><div>better than the existing sampled-data methods.</div>

Catechin and their derivatives have been studied to have antiviral potential against COVID-19 through in silico method “pharmacokinetics screening and molecular docking”. Pharmacokinetics and toxicity profiles were obtained through the ADMETSAR server and SwissADME server. Then proceed with the prediction of affinity through the method molecular docking using the software application MOE 2007.09. The testmaterial is in the form of a 3D catechin structure and its derivatives as well as several control ligands downloaded via Pubmed. While templatethe Receptor M pro protein and the Spike glycoprotein are downloaded from pdb.org (PDB ID: 6LU7 and 6LXT). The pharmacokinetic profile of catechins is relatively better than all control ligands with the lowest toxicity. Molecular docking results also show that catechins and theirderivatives have a stronger affinity than control ligands. This research proves that catechin has antiviral potential through inhibition of Mpro protein and Spike glycoprotein COVID-19 virus.

Abstract I give an informal presentation of the evolutionary game theoretic approach to the conventions that constitute linguistic meaning. The aim is to give a philosophical interpretation of the project, which accounts for the role of game theoretic mathematics in explaining linguistic phenomena. I articulate the main virtue of this sort of account, which is its psychological economy, and I point to the casual mechanisms that are the ground of the application of evolutionary game theory to linguistic phenomena. Lastly, I consider the objection that the account cannot explain predication, logic, and compositionality.
