MEDIUM AND LARGE SIZED MAMMALS IN PROTECTED AREA AT CERRADO, MATO GROSSO DO SUL, BRAZIL: Habitat loss is one of the greatest threats to fauna, especially for medium to large-sized terrestrial mammals. Considering the continuous threats on Cerrado remnants, it is essential to carry out mammal inventories in areas with low information available. In order to evaluate the species richness and the relative frequency of medium and large mammals, we investigated the area with direct observations and using camera traps. The study was conducted from February to August 2020, in the Serra do Bom Jardim Municipal Natural Monument, in Alcinópolis, Mato Grosso do Sul State (MS). From a sampling effort of 840 trap-nights and 224 hours of direct observations, a total of 27 species of native mammals were registered, representing 57.4 % of medium and large species that occur MS. Species accumulation curve associated with estimated richness (Jackknife-1) indicates that continued sampling would add new species. Two species were responsible for more than 60 % of the photographic records (Tapirus terrestre and Cerdocyon thous). Our survey added three new occurrences to the protected area management plan (Didelphis albiventris, Leopardus tigrinus, and Coendou prehensilis). The occurrence of L. tigrinus is the first record for the state of MS. This is the only globally threatened carnivore in Brazil. We recorded more than 50 % of the endangered species present in MS, besides L. tigrinus. Two of endangered species, Ozotoceros bezoarticus and Priodontes maximus, are among the rarest species in MS. Our study contributes to conservation measures proposed by municipal protected area, which plays a fundamental role for wildlife conservation in the Cerrado-Pantanal corridor.

Information on ichthyoplankton is an important tool in determining reproduction periods that - if associated to environmental variables - allows for inferences about the factors that regulate their intensity, beginning, and ending. In this context, this study aims to establish (i) ichthyoplankton composition; (ii) temporal variations in the overall density of eggs and larvae and among the most important taxa; and (iii) the influence of some abiotic and biotic variables on these organisms' abundance. Ichthyoplankton sampling was undertaken during the period between April 2005 and March 2006 at the Ivinhema River, upper Paraná River basin (MS/Brazil). Differences in the ichthyoplankton's temporal variation were evaluated using unifactorial ANOVAs. Principal Component Analysis and Pearson's correlation were used for the relationships between eggs and larvae densities and environmental variables. A total of 3,341 eggs and 2,896 larvae were captured during the period studied, and most of them were medium-sized and large species that carried out some type of reproductive migration. The highest densities of eggs and larvae occurred during the months of spring and summer, except for those of Bryconamericus stramineus, which was most abundant during the winter. The density of ichthyoplankton was most positively correlated with the water's outflow and temperature. However, Plagioscion squamosissimus was positively related to the increase in pH and in zooplanktonic organisms, while B. stramineus was inversely correlated with water outflow and temperature. The study concludes that spawning is most intense in the spring and summer, especially between November and January, and is related to the greatest values of water temperature and outflow. Nevertheless, the response and reproductive intensity in relation to the environmental variables vary according to the species.

ABSTRACT The fungi diversity in Brazil is not fully known yet, mainly in Serra de Maracaju, which is located in the central portion of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, in the center-western region of Brazil. Samples were taken from different phytophysiognomies of the Cerrado, the dominating biome of that region, in areas where Cerrado and pasture alternate, in the municipality of Corguinho. Of the species identified, 18 are new citations for Brazil, as they are not included in the List of Brazilian Flora (fungi), and 36 are recorded for the first time for [the State of] Mato Grosso do Sul. As a total, 62 species were collected in nine excursions during 2014 and 2015. Out of this total, 15 species are deemed edible, four are toxic, ten are medicinal, two are used in bioremediation processes, and one is bioluminescent, according to the literature.

The southern cone of Mato Grosso do Sul state is poorly known in terms of mammal community composition. This information is very important to propose an environmental management plan. The present study provides information on the composition of medium and large size mammals in the municipality of Batayporã, in the Ivinhema river basin, southwestern Brazil. The mammal community was sampled during 19 field sampling occasions by the identification of vestiges, such as burrows, feces, vocalization and tracks, as well as through direct observations. I recorded 24 mammal species distributed in eight taxonomic orders. Thirteen species were frequently recorded, six species were rarely recorded, and six species are considered threatened in Brazil or in global level. The area presents almost half of the medium and large-sized mammal fauna from Mato Grosso do Sul state, but fragmentation and sugarcane plantations may represent a threat to the local biodiversity conservation.

This experiment studied tick fauna associated to Didelphis albiventris Lund 1840 from a Cerrado area (Mato Grosso do Sul State, non-adjoining to Pantanal) inserted in a pasture and agricultural activities matrix, with few natural preserved forest patches. Authors also summarized data on ticks parasitizing Didelphis spp. in Brazil, and discussed infestation patterns in different biomes and locations. Study took place in Cervinho Farm, Bandeirantes Municipality. For captures, Tomahawk-like traps were distributed along two forest patches (30 each) during five nights. Captures occurred monthly (July/2013 to September/2014), sampling both fragments on alternate months. Animals were sedated and ticks were collected and stored in vials containing ethanol (70%) for identification. 51 D. albiventris were captured in 15 campaigns. Tick prevalence was 100%, and 49.5% of the animals were co-infested by two or more tick species. Four parasitizing species were found: Amblyomma sculptum Berlese, 1888 (78 nymphs), Ixodes loricatus Neumann, 1899 (56 adults), Amblyomma dubitatum Neumann, 1899 (45 nymphs), Amblyomma coelebs Neumann, 1899 (32 nymphs) and Amblyomma sp. (123 larvae). A. sculptum was the most abundant tick, but most frequent species were A. coelebs and A. dubitatum, followed by I. loricatus. Co-occurrences of more than two species were observed among all tick pairs. D. albiventris usually presents high prevalence of tick infestation. However, this study presented 100% prevalence. Knowledge of host-parasite relation and interactions between different ticks that coexist on a same host are essential, since such interaction may favor pathogen dissemination. This is of special relevance regarding D. albiventris, known for participating in maintenance of ecological cycles of Spotted Fever Group rickettsiae.

Turgida turgida have been largely reported parasitizing Didelphis species in North and South America based on light microscopy observation. However, the features that differentiate T. turgida from other physalopterid species should be observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A female white-bellied opossum, Didelphis albiventris, arrived dead at the Centro de Reabilitação de Animais Silvestres (CRAS) in the municipality of Campo Grande, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. During the necropsy, adult nematodes were collected from stomach and intestine. The nematodes were determined to be adult specimens and submitted to SEM for the species determination. This is the first report of T. turgida confirmed by SEM in the Neotropical region and the first report in an urban area in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.
