The possibility of creating a wear-resistant dry sliding electrical contact tungsten/steel was studied. It was shown that tungsten caused severe wear of the quenched steel counterbody due to unlimited plastic flow of its surface layer at a current density up to 150 A/cm2 . This indicated the impossibility of achieving satisfactory characteristics of such a contact. Low electrical conductivity and wear resistance of the contact tungsten/steel were presented in comparison with the known high copper/steel contact characteristics under the same conditions. X-ray phase analysis data of the steel sliding surfaces made it possible to state that the cause of the unsatisfactory sliding of tungsten was the absence of the necessary concentration of FeO oxide on the sliding surface of the steel.

Based on the sliding mode control methodology, this paper presents a robust control strategy for underactuated systems with mismatched uncertainties. The system consists of a nominal system and the mismatched uncertainties. Since the nominal system can be considered to be made up of several subsystems, a hierarchical structure for the sliding surfaces is designed. This is achieved by taking the sliding surface of one of the subsystems as the first-layer sliding surface and using this sliding surface and the sliding surface of another subsystem to construct the second-layer sliding surface. This process continues till the sliding surfaces of all the subsystems are included. A lumped sliding mode compensator is designed at the last-layer sliding surface. The asymptotic stability of all of the layer sliding surfaces and the sliding surface of each subsystem is proven. Simulation results show the validity of this robust control method through stabilization control of a system consisting of two inverted pendulums and mismatched uncertainties.

This paper demonstrates the capability to perform three-dimensional computations for explosive-metal interaction problems with complex sliding surfaces. An analysis is performed for an explosive device which accelerates a metal liner known as a self-forging fragment. Results are presented to show the effects of off-center detonation, asymmetric liner thickness, and asymmetric explosive density for an otherwise axisymmetric device. These three-dimensional conditions have little effect on the linear velocities, but they do introduce significant angular velocities to the self-forging fragment. Unlike projectile-target impact computations, which require only a single sliding surface between the projectile and the target, the explosive devices have multiple, intersecting, three-dimensional sliding surfaces between the expanding explosive gases and the various metal portions of the devices. Included are descriptions of the specialized “search routines” and the “double-pass” approach used for the explosive-metal interfaces.

This paper is intended to demonstrate that designers of wet clutches for power transmission can obtain the optimum friction characteristics for specific applications by considering the interaction between friction materials and lubricants. A friction clutch plate rig is described and the friction results obtained are presented. It is shown that a wide variation of coefficients of friction and frictional characteristics in wet friction clutches can be obtained by changing the oils and friction materials. In particular the coefficient of friction is dependent upon (1) the oil, (2) the materials of the sliding surfaces, (3) sliding speed, and (4) temperature. It is also shown that the coefficient of friction is affected by ( a) refining treatment given to the oil, ( b) different base oils, and ( c) additives.

The paper is concerned with the performance properties of electro-spark deposited coatings, which were determined basing on microstructural and roughness analysis and application tests. The studies were conducted using of the tungsten carbide-ceramic electrodes produced by the powder metallurgy hot pressing route. The anti-wear coatings were electro-spark deposited over C45 carbon steel by means of an EIL-8A. These coatings are likely to be applied to increase the abrasive wear resistance of tools and machine parts.
