Purpose This paper aims to study the effect of isosceles triangle micro concave texture with different parameters on the performance of oil seal to obtain a reasonable combination of parameters. Design/methodology/approach Based on the theory of elastohydrodynamic lubrication, a numerical model is established by coupling the texture parameters of isosceles triangle with concave lip with the two-dimensional average Reynolds equation considering surface roughness. Findings The results show that there is an optimal combination of parameters to improve the performance of the oil seal. When hp = 5µm-6.5 µm, a = 110°−130°, O = 1.4, C = 1.6 mm-2.2 mm, the oil seal with isosceles triangle micro concave texture can show good lubrication characteristics, friction characteristics and sealing ability. Originality/value The model provides a new idea for the design of new oil seal products and provides a theoretical support for the application of surface texture technology in the sealing field in the future.

Purpose The edge of diesel engine crankshaft main bearing is more likely to fail in its real working condition. This paper aims to study the bearing failure mechanism by finding the relationship between bearing lubrication characteristics and its working condition. Design/methodology/approach This work builds the mixed lubrication model of crankshaft bearing to analyze the cause of bearing abnormal wear, and the finite difference method was used to solving the average Reynolds equation. During the analysis, journal misaligned angle, external load and roughness are considered. Findings The result shows that the wear of the diesel engine crankshaft bearing happens in engine startup phase and the bottom of the bearing are more prone to be excessively worn. Under the influence of journal misalignment, bearing asperity contact load and speed range of mixed lubrication will increase markedly. The edge of the bearing will be excessively worn. The effect of misalignment on bearing lubrication performance varies under different shaft rotation speed. Originality/value The former research studies on crankshaft bearing either just focused on its lubrication characteristics or interested in its failure types (wear, adhere, cavitation). This paper studies the relationship between bearing failure mechanism and lubrication performance.

In contrast to the conventional forced wave generator which consists of cam and flexible bearing in harmonic drive, the novel forced wave generator retains cam but cancels flexible bearing. In this article, the lubrication characteristics of the novel forced wave generator in harmonic drive is studied. First, an elliptical sliding bearing (ESB) model of simplified structure between the novel forced wave generator and the flex spline is established. Further, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method is employed to study the effect of some factors on the lubrication characteristics of the ESB model including elliptical gap ratio, width, and rotational speed. According to the analysis, the elliptical gap ratio has a great impact and its optimal value is 3, which is used in the design of the novel forced wave generator. Last, the practical design of the novel forced wave generator in harmonic drive is given, which can provide a basis for design and optimization of a forced wave generator without flexible bearing of the harmonic drive.

Abstract A machined surface has observable fractal characteristics, with infinite local and overall self-similar consistency. Therefore, the fractal theory is considered to provide a better description of the morphological characteristics of rough surfaces, which accurately reflects the randomness and multi-scale characteristics of rough surfaces and it is not comparable with the surface characteristics obtained based on statistical parameters limited by sampling length and device resolution. In this study, the Weierstrass-Mandelbrot (W-M) function was applied to construct a fractal reconstruction surface, and the mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication model was used to investigate the lubrication characteristics of real and reconstructed surfaces under the same fractal parameters. The effects of the fractal parameters on the fractal surface lubrication characteristics were further analyzed. The results demonstrate that the lateral roughness fractal surface provides greater resistance to the entrained flow of lubricant, which leads to a larger average film thickness, than the longitudinal roughness and isotropic fractal surface. With the increase in fractal dimension, the surface roughness peak density increases, which reduces the surface film thickness by 47%, and the friction coefficient increases by 46%. The lubrication parameter fluctuates slightly with the change in the number of overlapping ridges M of the fractal surface. Generally, M has little effect on the surface lubrication characteristics.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to reveal the transient thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication mechanism of a bidirectional thrust bearing in a pumped-storage unit, and to propose the transient simulation method of two-way fluid-solid-thermal interaction of thrust bearing.Design/methodology/approachThe transient fluid-solid-thermal interaction method is used to simulate the three-dimensional lubrication of the thrust bearing, during the start-up and shutdown process of a pumped storage unit. A pad including an oil hole is modelled to analyze the temporal variation of lubrication characteristics, such as the film pressure, thickness and temperature, during the transient operation process.FindingsThe injection of the high-pressure oil sufficiently affects the lubrication characteristics on film, in which the hysteresis phenomena were found between the start-up and shutdown possess.Originality/valueThis paper reveals the transient lubrication mechanism of tilting pad in a thrust bearing, by means of transient fluid-solid-thermal interaction method. Lubrication characteristics are simulated without assuming the temperature relationship between the oil film inlet and the outlet and the heat transfer on the pad free surface. This paper provides a theoretical basis for the safe design and stable operation of thrust bearings.

Purpose This paper aims to study the influence of three-column groove shell radius, ball radius, lubricating oil viscosity and elastic modulus on the thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) characteristics and optimisation of the ball-type tripod universal joint. Design/methodology/approach The point contact TEHL model of the joint was developed, and the multi-grid method was used to solve it. The influence of three-column groove shell radius, ball radius, lubricating oil viscosity and elastic modulus on the lubrication characteristics was analysed. Further, the optimisation of the joint TEHL performance was carried out by the Kriging approximation model combined with the multi-objective particle swarm optimisation (MOPSO) algorithm. Findings The research results show that increasing groove shell radius and ball radius can effectively increase the oil film thickness, and decrease the oil film pressure, as well as the temperature rise. Decreasing elastic modulus can reduce the oil film temperature rise and pressure, and increasing viscosity can effectively increase the oil film thickness. The optimised minimum oil film thickness increases by 33.23% and the optimised maximum oil film pressure and maximum temperature rise decrease by 11.92% and 28.87%, respectively. Furthermore, the relative error of each response output is less than 10%. Originality/value This study applies TEHL theory to the tribological research of the ball-type tripod universal joint, and the joint’s lubrication performance is improved greatly by the Kriging model and MOPSO algorithm, which provides an effective measure to raise the joint’s working efficiency.

Abstract The relative sliding at the meshing point directly affects the contact and lubrication characteristics of the gear pair, and is the main cause of gear wear and power loss. In this research, for investigation of a new type of low sliding ratio (LSR) gear pair whose tooth profile is constructed by a cubic function, a Three-dimensional (3D) mixed EHL line contact model was established with consideration of the effect of tooth profile geometry, transient motion characteristics, load distribution and machining roughness. The distribution of the center film thickness of the LSR gear along the meshing line was predicted through an example the result of which was compared with a typical line contact EHL formula to verify the model. In addition, the difference was investigated in film thickness distribution, of friction coefficient and temperature rise between LSR spur gears and involute spur gears. Basing on above, there was discussion about the effect of 3D rough tooth surface on the contact lubrication characteristics of LSR gears. The results demonstrated that the minimum center film thickness of the LSR gear appeared at the alternating point of the concave and convex tooth surfaces. At the same time, compared with the involute gear, the LSR gear significantly increased the film thickness at the start and ending points of the meshing, and reduced the friction coefficient and the flash temperature rise.

Water-lubricated single-screw compressors (WSSCs) have developed rapidly in recent years because they can supply oil-free compressed air at considerably low costs. However, a major technical obstacle is that the conventional bearing arrangement of a star wheel shaft is prone to wear failure, which makes it difficult for WSSCs to run properly for long periods of time. To solve this problem, a star wheel thrust bearing with new liquid groove was proposed in this paper. Pulsating forces (i.e., bearing forces) acting on a star wheel shaft by compressing air were calculated through the dynamic analysis of the star wheel shaft system. A mathematical model of hydraulic water films in the bearing sliding clearance was established to describe the influence of water injection pressure on water film pressure distribution and its bearing capacity. Lubrication characteristics were compared between two types of hydrostatic thrust bearings (HTBs) with different grooves to illustrate that the new structure is more suitable for WSSCs. The reasonability of the proposed model and simulation results were verified using an axial thrust bearing test rig developed by the authors. In addition, variation parameters of hydrostatic film thickness between the sliding surfaces of the star wheel axial thrust bearing were measured. The results show that the instability of the water film thickness and axial vibration of the star wheel were suppressed, thereby avoiding the contact of solid materials between the end face of the axial thrust bearing. This study provides a structural optimization pattern of star wheel axial thrust bearings used in water-lubricated single-screw compressors.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the lubrication performance and stability improvement of rocket turbopump mechanical seals by attaching superconducting magnetic force. A comprehensive multiphysics numerical model is presented including microscale clearance flow, magnetic field, as well as three degrees of freedom dynamic motion. The Maxwell equation and modified Reynolds equation considering mass-conserving boundary conditions and turbulence flow were solved simultaneously at each time step to obtain the transient response of sealing parameters. Results indicate that the mechanical seal attaching superconducting magnetic force could dramatically improve carrying capacity and lubrication characteristics under heavy loading conditions, and it also has an appreciable effect on dynamic stability. It is worth exploring the application of superconducting magnetic force in reusable rockets and cryogenic equipment combined with its unique advantages.
