Air pollution, especially in large cities around the world, is associated with serious problems both with people’s health and the environment. Over the past few years, there has been a particularly intensive demand for alternatives to fossil fuels, because when they are burned, substances that pollute the environment are released. In addition to the smoke from fuels burned for heating and harmful emissions that industrial installations release, the exhaust emissions of vehicles create a large share of the fossil fuel pollution. Alternative fuels, known as non-conventional and advanced fuels, are derived from resources other than fossil fuels. Because alcoholic fuels have several physical and propellant properties similar to those of gasoline, they can be considered as one of the alternative fuels. Alcoholic fuels or alcohol-blended fuels may be used in gasoline engines to reduce exhaust emissions. This study aimed to develop a gasoline engine model to predict the influence of different types of alcohol-blended fuels on performance and emissions. For the purpose of this study, the AVL Boost software was used to analyse characteristics of the gasoline engine when operating with different mixtures of ethanol, methanol, butanol, and gasoline (by volume). Results obtained from different fuel blends showed that when alcohol blends were used, brake power decreased and the brake specific fuel consumption increased compared to when using gasoline, and CO and HC concentrations decreased as the fuel blends percentage increased.

In this paper, a model predictive control (MPC) approach is presented for solving the energy management problem in a parallel hydraulic hybrid vehicle. The hydraulic hybrid vehicle uses variable displacement pump/motors to transfer energy between the mechanical and hydraulic domains and a high pressure accumulator for energy storage. A model of the parallel hydraulic hybrid powertrain is presented which utilizes the Simscape/Simhydraulics toolboxes of Matlab. These toolboxes allow for a concise description of the relevant powertrain dynamics. The proposed MPC regulates the engine torque and pump/motor displacement in order to track a desired velocity profile while maintaining desired engine conditions. In addition, logic is applied to the MPC to prevent high frequency cycling of the engine. Simulation results demonstrate the capability of the proposed control strategy to track both a desired engine torque and vehicle velocity.

The paper describes the design process for a controlled pulse turbocharging system (CPT) on a 5 cylinder 4-stroke marine engine and highlights the potential for improved engine performance as well as reduced smoke emissions under steady state and transient operating conditions, as offered by the following technologies: • controlled pulse turbocharging, • high pressure air injection onto the compressor impeller as well as into the air receiver, and • an electronic engine control system, including a hydraulic powered electric actuator. Calibrated engine simulation computer models based on the results of tests performed on the engine in its baseline configuration were used to design the CPT components. Various engine tests with CPT under steady state and transient operating conditions show the engine optimization process and how the above-mentioned technologies benefit engine behavior in both generator and propeller law operation.

This paper presents an approach to turbofan engine dynamical output feedback controller (DOFC) design in the framework of LMI (Linear Matrix Inequality)-based H∞ control. In combination with loop shaping and internal model principle, the linear state space model of a turbofan engine is converted into that of some augmented plant, which is used to establish the LMI formulations of the standard H∞ control problem with respect to this augmented plant. Furthermore, by solving optimal H∞ controller for the augmented plant, we indirectly obtain the H∞ DOFC of turbofan engine which successfully achieves the tracking of reference instructions and effective constraints on control inputs. This design method is applied to the H∞ DOFC design for the linear models of an advanced multivariate turbofan engine. The obtained H∞ DOFC is only in control of the steady state of this turbofan engine. Simulation results from the linear and nonlinear models of this turbofan engine show that the resulting controller has such properties as good tracking performance, strong disturbance rejection, and satisfying robustness.

AbstractThe design and verification of assembly operations is essential for planning product production operations. Recently, virtual prototyping has witnessed tremendous progress, and has reached a stage where current environments enable rich and multi-modal interaction between designers and models through stereoscopic visuals, surround sound, and haptic feedback. The benefits of building and using Virtual Reality (VR) models in assembly process verification are discussed in this paper. In this paper, we present the virtual assembly (VA) of an aircraft turbine engine. The assembly parts and sequences are explained using a virtual reality design system. The system enables stereoscopic visuals, surround sounds, and ample and intuitive interaction with developed models. A special software architecture is suggested to describe the assembly parts and assembly sequence in VR. A collision detection mechanism is employed that provides visual feedback to check the interference between components. The system is tested for virtual prototype and assembly sequencing of a turbine engine. We show that the developed system is comprehensive in terms of VR feedback mechanisms, which include visual, auditory, tactile, as well as force feedback. The system is shown to be effective and efficient for validating the design of assembly, part design, and operations planning.

In this paper, engine simulation tool is used to investigate the effect of variable intake manifold and variable valve timing technologies on the engine performance at full load engine conditions. Here, an engine model of 1.6 litre four cylinders, four stroke spark ignition (SI) engine is constructed using GT-Power software to represent the real engine conditions. This constructed model is then correlated to the experimental data to make sure the accuracy of this model. The comparison results of volumetric efficiency (VE), intake manifold air pressure (MAP), exhaust manifold back pressure (BckPress) and brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) show very well agreement with the differences of less than 4%. Then this correlated model is used to predict the engine performance at various intake runner lengths (IRL) and various intake valve open (IVO) timings. Design of experiment and optimisation tool are applied to obtain optimum parameters. Here, several configurations of IRL and IVO timing are proposed to give several options during the engine development work. A significant improvement is found at configuration of variable IVO timing and variable IRL compared to fixed IVO timing and fixed IRL.

Diesel engine simulation results using two different combustion models are presented in this study, namely the representative interactive flamelet (RIF) model and the direct integration of computational fluid dynamics and CHEMKIN. Both models have been implemented into an improved version of the KIVA code. The KIVA/RIF model uses a single flamelet approach and also considers the effects of vaporization on turbulence-chemistry interactions. The KIVA/CHEMKIN model uses a direct integration approach that solves for the chemical reactions in each computational cell. The above two models are applied to simulate combustion and emissions in diesel engines with comparable results. Detailed comparisons of predicted heat release data and in-cylinder flows also indicate that both models predict very similar combustion characteristics. This is likely due to the fact that after ignition, combustion rates are mixing controlled rather than chemistry controlled under the diesel conditions studied.
