Purpose: A review regarding the mechanisms of metal-ceramic join is presented. Design/methodology/approach: The impact of the air-abrasion parameters on the mechanical bond strength of the ceramic crowns was discussed. The presence of opaque on the chemical bond was analysed. Research of the influence of the difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion values on the metal-ceramic bond was included. The methods of testing the bond strength were analysed. Findings: The metal substructure-dental ceramic bond strength is affected by all types of bond. In bond strength, 3-point bending test and shear test are mainly used. Created samples simulate the ceramic crowns veneered on one side. The role of physical bond on ceramic crowns veneered around metal substructure is unknown. Research limitations/implications: The prosthetic restorations with the ceramic surrounding whole the metal substructure are commonly used. The impact of shrinkage in the cylindrical deposition of the ceramic on metal substructure should be analysed. Practical implications: Numerical analysis and FEM simulation can be helpful in the analysis of the physical bond between the metal substructure and the dental ceramic around it. Originality/value: The impact of the type of the bond to metal-ceramic bond strength is presented, taking into account the cognitive gap in the influence of the coefficient of thermal expansion on the cylindrical placement of ceramic on the substructure.

Today, the most common way of laser sealing is using a glass frit paste and screen printer. Laser sealing using glass frit paste has some problems, such as pores, nonuniform height, imperfect hermetic sealing, etc. In order to overcome these problems, sealing using fiber types of sealant is attractive for packaging devices. In this work, (70-x)V2O5-5ZnO-22BaO-3B2O3-xM(PO3)n glasses (mol%) incorporated with xM(PO3)n concentration (where M = Mg, Al, n = 2, 3, respectively) were fabricated and their thermal, thermomechanical, and structural properties were investigated. Most importantly, for this type of sealing, the glass should have a thermal stability (ΔT) of ≥80 °C and the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between the glass and panel should be 1.0 ppm/°C. The highest thermal stability ΔT of the order of 93.2 °C and 112.9 °C was obtained for the 15 mol% of Mg(PO3)2 and Al(PO3)3 doped glasses, respectively. This reveals that the bond strength and connectivity is more strongly improved by trivalent Al(PO3)3. The CTE of a (70-x)V2O5-5ZnO-22BaO-3B2O3-xAl(PO3)3 glass system (mol%) (where x = 5–15, mol%) is in the range of 9.5–15.5 (×10−6/K), which is comparable with the CTE (9–10 (×10−6/K)) of commercial DSSC glass panels. Based on the results, the studied glass systems are considered to be suitable for laser sealing using fiber types of sealant.

Abstract Plasma sprayed thermal barrier coatings often face the problems of spallation and cracking in service owing to their poor bond strength and high residual stresses. Functionally graded thermal barrier coatings with a gradual compositional variation from heat resistant ceramics to fracture resistant metals are proposed to mitigate these problems. In this paper, functionally graded Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) / NiCoCrAlY composite coatings were prepared using pre-alloyed and spheroidized composite powders. The mechanical and thermal properties of graded YSZ/NiCoCrAlY composite coatings, such as elastic modulus, bond strength, coefficient of thermal expansion, thermal cycling and oxidation resistance were investigated. Results showed that the bond strength and thermal cycling resistance of FGM coatings were much better than that of the duplex coatings. The coefficient of thermal expansion and elastic modulus changed gradually through the 5-layer functionally graded coating.
