Outsourcing inherently considers what activity needs to reside within a given firm. The difficulty of exchanges between firms in the face of uncertainty affects where work on developing and producing new products is performed. Theory is developed and explored using a case study that explains firm sourcing decisions as a response to uncertainty within the context of industry structure and related transaction costs. Viewing outsourcing broadly results in a better delineation of outsourcing options. Implications for management research and practice are identified.

This study analyses the case study of a deconstruction project called the ‘Whole House Reuse’ (WHR) which aimed, firstly, to harvest materials from a residential house, secondly, to produce new products using the recovered materials, and thirdly, to organize exhibition for the local public to promote awareness on resource conservation and sustainable deconstruction practices. The study applies characterization of recovered materials through deconstruction. In addition to the material recovery, the study assesses the embodied energy saving and greenhouse gas emission abatement of the deconstruction project. Around twelve tonnes of various construction materials were harvested through a systematic deconstruction approach, most which would otherwise be disposed to landfill in the traditional demolition approach. The study estimates that the recovered materials could potentially save around 502,158MJ of embodied energy and prevent carbon emission of around 27,029kg (CO2e). Deconstruction could eventually contribute to New Zealand’s national emission reduction targets. In addition, the project successfully engages local communities and designers to produce 400 new products using the recovered materials and exhibited to the local people. The study concludes that there is a huge prospect in regard to resource recovery, emission reduction, employment and small business opportunities using deconstruction of the old house. The socio-cultural importance of the WHR project is definitely immense; however, the greater benefits of such projects are often ignored and remain unreported to wider audiences as most of the external and environmental costs have not been considered in the traditional linear economy. It is acknowledged that under a favourable market condition and with appropriate support from local communities and authorities, deconstruction could contribute significantly to resource conservation and environmental protection despite its requirement of labour intensive efforts.

For some quality inspection practices, subjective judgements based on the inspectors' experience and knowledge, such as visual inspection, may be required for some particular quality characteristics. This kind of measurement system, including its associated randomness and fuzziness, should be assessed by Measurement system analysis (MSA) before its application. For such purpose, this article represents observations with randomness and fuzziness from MSAs as fuzzy random variables, and then two pairs of descriptive parameters, i.e., expected value and variance, are derived. Then, the relationship of the total sum of squares of factors is proven to hold, so that fuzzy analysis of variance (FANOVA) in terms of gauge repeatability and reproducibility can be developed. The proposed approach has the advantage that FANOVA is developed based on the relationship of the total sum of squares of factors, considering randomness and fuzziness. A real case in the semiconductor packaging industry is used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approaches to MSA.

Wire bonding process is first level interconnection technology used in the semiconductor packaging industry. The wire bond shear tests are used in the industry to examine the bond strength and reliability of the bonded wires. Hence, in this study thesimulation on wire bond shear test is performed on a sharp groove surface bond pad. ANSYS ver 11 was used to perform the simulation. The stress response of the bonded wires are investigated.The effects of three wire materials gold(Au), aluminum(Al) and copper(Cu) on the stress response during shear test were examined. The simulation results showed that copper wire bond induces highest stress and gold wire exhibits the least stress response.
