scholarly journals The Use of Simulation Training to Improve Knowledge, Skills, and Confidence Among Healthcare Students: A Systematic Review

Purpose: The use of simulation has become a routine part of education and training for health professionals in many health education facilities. The increased awareness of patient safety and recent advances in technology are the main incentives to use simulation to teach and evaluate clinical competencies. The primary purpose of this study was to review the best available evidence (level and quality) for the use of simulation training to improve clinical skills, knowledge, and self-confidence among healthcare students. Method: A systematic review of qualitative and quantitative literature published between 2000 and 2016 was undertaken using databases including PubMed, CINAHL®, and PsycINFO® databases as well as three journal collections within ProQuest. In addition to the database search, the literature search for this study included two additional activities: search results were compared against the bibliographies of the reviewed studies, and Google Scholar was used to search the Internet for relevant publications. Data from studies meeting inclusion criteria was extracted and summarized. The level and strength of evidence was rated for each study. Results: Of 1412 studies identified via the search strategy, 30 met the inclusion criteria for this systematic review. A wide variety of study designs, interventions, measurements, and simulation types were represented. Data for study location, health profession, sample size, purpose, simulation type, intervention, and outcome measure are presented via evidence tables by authors. Statistically and/or clinically significant improvements in knowledge, skills, and/or self-confidence following simulation training were reported. Primary and secondary outcomes were identified and summarized. Conclusions: Evidence demonstrates that the use of simulation in student education significantly improves knowledge, skills, and self-confidence. A quality improvement framework of five best practice components for application in simulation research is proposed, generated from the findings of this review. Future research employing high quality research designs focusing on debriefing practices, interprofessional education applications, validation of outcome measures, student satisfaction, and long-term information retention will contribute to the growing body of literature supporting best practices for simulation training in healthcare.

Theories play an important role in guiding intimate partner homicide (IPH) prevention research and practice. This study is the first systematic review of theories employed to explain why someone might kill their intimate partner. This review used rigorous methods to locate and synthesize literature that described explanatory theories of IPH perpetration. Using set search terms, we systematically searched 15 databases and repositories for theory-focused documents (i.e., theory papers or analyses) published in English from 2003 to 2018. Eighteen documents met these inclusion criteria and identified 22 individual theories that seek to explain why people might kill their intimate partners. These theories fell within four broader theoretical perspectives: feminist, evolutionary, sociological/criminological, and combined. Key tenets and focal populations of these 22 theories were identified and organized into a compendium of explanatory theories of IPH perpetration. Potential strengths and limitations of each of the four perspectives were described. Review findings underscored the likely importance of addressing gender as well as risk and protective factors at all levels of the social ecological model in efforts to understand IPH perpetration. The review findings highlighted the need for both integrated theories and a broader conceptual organizing framework to guide work aimed at IPH perpetration prevention to leverage the strengths of disparate theoretical perspectives. With the goal of informing future research, a preliminary iteration of such a framework is presented.

Background: Conditioning- and cue-induced craving theories indicate that music has the potential to induce substance craving. A better understanding of this phenomenon could enhance treatment and prevent misuse, relapse, and overdose. Objective: The purpose of this systematic review was to locate and examine studies using music to induce substance craving in humans. We sought to discover if music can induce substance craving as well as specific aspects of the music and how it was used. Method: Adhering to the PRISMA Statement and Checklist, we conducted a systematic review of literature on music-induced substance craving in nine databases. We extracted data from studies meeting our inclusion criteria, which related to substance craving induced by music and data based on music intervention reporting guidelines. Results: We reviewed 751 research outputs. A total of 33 articles meeting the inclusion criteria were found, indicating that various types of music can induce alcohol, cannabis, nicotine, and general substance craving. In most of the studies, music was used as a component of a mood induction technique or in a virtual reality setting that led to craving. There tended to be a lack of detail about the music itself and most authors did not adhere to music intervention reporting guidelines. In the majority of studies, the researchers selected the music to induce negative mood states so as to elicit craving. Conclusion: Music has the potential to induce substance craving. While the music used in studies varied considerably and tended to be well controlled from a research design perspective, the music was not based on the music psychology literature, and authors did not adequately report essential aspects of the music. Implications for clinical practice, limitations, and suggestions for future research are provided.

The purpose of this review of literature was to investigate the unique issues facing female band directors at the high school and college levels. A search of 5 different databases was conducted, and 39 studies met the inclusion criteria for this study. Results of this review of literature are presented according to the following themes: (a) historical background, (b) underrepresentation and lack of female mentors, (c) motherhood, and (d) discrimination. Although the number of female high school and college band directors continues to increase, there are many different issues that women may face professionally. Despite these issues, women continue to persevere as they fight for their place on the podium. Recommendations for female music educators are provided, as well as suggestions for future research.

Abstract Microplastics (MPs) are an emerging contaminant ubiquitous in the environment. There is growing concern regarding potential human health effects, a major human exposure route being dietary uptake. We have undertaken a systematic review (SR) and meta-analysis to identify all relevant research on MP contamination of salt intended for human consumption. Three thousand nine hundred and nineteen papers were identified, with ten fitting the inclusion criteria. A search of the databases MEDLINE, EMBASE and Web of Science, from launch date to September 2020, was conducted. MP contamination of salt varied significantly between four origins, sea salt 0–1674 MPs/kg, lake salt 8–462 MPs/kg, rock and well salt 0–204 MPs/kg. The majority of samples were found to be contaminated by MPs. Corresponding potential human exposures are estimated to be 0–6110 MPs per year (for all origins), confirming salt as a carrier of MPs. A bespoke risk of bias (RoB) assessment tool was used to appraise the quality of the studies, with studies demonstrating moderate to low RoB. These results suggest that a series of recurring issues need to be addressed in future research regarding sampling, analysis and reporting to improve confidence in research findings.

This systematic review summarizes current measurements of trust in human-automation interaction. A total of 217 articles were found, and it was determined that 44 articles contained relevant information and met inclusion criteria. The results of the review showed that 75% ( n = 33) of articles used subjective measures of trust only, and 41% ( n = 18) used researcher-defined methods of measuring trust instead of peer-reviewed and validated scales. Of 10 defined industries, the highest number of articles ( n = 14) were assigned to the automotive industry, followed by aviation, military, and security ( n = 6). The automated systems studied in relevant articles were decision aids, automated control and navigation systems, and process control systems. This review showed that research of trust in human-automation interaction (1) has the tendency to use subjective measures of trust as the primary or only measure, (2) has the tendency to individually define trust and how it is measured, and (3) is heavily composed of research on automotive automation. Best practices and future research are discussed.

Objectives: This review evaluates the evidence on the effects of cognitive–behavioral therapy (CBT) on drug use reduction for young people in treatment for nonopioid drug use. Method: We followed Campbell Collaboration guidelines to conduct a systematic review of randomized and nonrandomized trials. Meta-analytic methods were used to quantitatively synthesize study results. Results: The search yielded seven studies that met inclusion criteria. Each of the seven studies compared CBT to another intervention. Authors’ Conclusions: The review found that there was no evidence that CBT interventions perform better or worse than the comparison interventions and additional research is needed. The number of studies included in this review was limited, and therefore should the overall results be interpreted with caution.

ObjectiveThe purpose of this paper was to conduct a systematic review of existing literature on simulation-based training of cataract surgery. Available literature was evaluated and projections on how current findings could be applied to cataract surgery training were summarised. The quality of included literature was also assessed.Methods and analysisThe PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library databases were searched for articles pertaining to simulation training in cataract surgery on 18 November 2019. Selected articles were qualitatively analysed.ResultsA total of 165 articles were identified out of which 10 met inclusion criteria. Four studies reported construct validity of the EyeSi simulator. Six studies demonstrated improved surgical outcomes corresponding to training on the simulator. Quality assessment of included studies was satisfactory.ConclusionCurrent studies on simulation training in cataract surgery all point towards it being an effective training tool with low risk of study biases confounding this conclusion. As technology improves, surgical training must embrace and incorporate simulation technology in training.

Objectives. Cooking interventions are used in therapeutic and rehabilitative settings; however, little is known about the influence of these interventions on psychosocial outcomes. This systematic review examines the research evidence regarding the influence of cooking interventions on psychosocial outcomes. Methods. A systematic review of the literature examined peer-reviewed research using Embase, PubMed, CINALH Plus, and PsychInfo with the following search terms: cooking, culinary, baking, food preparation, cookery, occupational therapy, mental health, mood, psychosocial, affect, confidence, self-confidence, self-esteem, socialization, and rehabilitation. Inclusion criteria were the following: adults, English, influence of cooking interventions on psychosocial outcomes. PRISMA guidelines were used. Results. The search yielded 377 articles; and 11 ultimately met inclusion criteria and were reviewed. Generally, the quality of the research was weak due to nonrandomization, unvalidated research tools, and small sample sizes. However, inpatient and community-based cooking interventions yielded positive influences on socialization, self-esteem, quality of life, and affect. Conclusions. Finding benefits to cooking that extend beyond nutritional may be helpful in increasing motivation and frequency of cooking. This review suggests that cooking interventions may positively influence psychosocial outcomes, although this evidence is preliminary and limited. Further qualitative and rigorous quantitative research are needed to identify mechanisms by which cooking interventions may improve psychosocial outcomes.

Background:The liner is an integral part of a transtibial prosthesis designed to protect the residual limb, enhance comfort and provide suspension. Literature is difficult to interpret and use given the variety of interventions, outcome measures and method designs. Critical appraisal and synthesis of the evidence is needed to help inform decisions about liner prescription based on the user experience.Objectives:To critically appraise and synthesise research describing the user experience of transtibial prosthetic liners.Study design:Systematic review.Methods:A comprehensive suite of databases were searched using terms related to amputation level, liner type and user experience. Included studies were in English and measured the first-person experience of using a transtibial liner. Studies were appraised using the McMaster University Critical Review Forms.Results:A total of 18 articles met the inclusion criteria. While the quality of the evidence has improved over time, a number of common issues (e.g. sampling bias, validity of outcome measures, incorrect inferential analysis) reduce our ability to differentiate between the user experience of different transtibial liners.Conclusion:There is insufficient research to differentiate between the user experience of different transtibial liners. High-quality research is needed to inform decisions about liner prescription based on the user experience.Clinical relevanceThe available evidence suggests that the user experience of commonly reported problems (e.g. sweating) may be very similar between different liners. Aspects of the user experience that differ most between liners (e.g. unwanted noises, rotation within the socket) can help focus attention on what matters most when discussing prescription.

Abstract The increasing prevalence of chronic disease generates significant financial, social and psychosocial burden for patients, families and healthcare system. Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) is becoming recognized as a discipline among health and social care professionals and medical training institutions worldwide. Literature research suggests that following interventions could be particularly useful in the management of chronic patients. The objective of this systematic review was to assess the impact of IPC on chronic patients compared to standard health-care practice. The PICO model was adopted and three electronic databases (Medline, EMBASE, Web of Science) were searched using appropriate keywords. Selected trials were assessed for quality and risk of bias using the National Institutes of Health Quality Assessment of Controlled Intervention Studies. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistic, and comparison of outcomes among teams with or without pharmacist was performed using t-Student test (p < 0,05). Out of 11.128, 24 studies met the inclusion criteria and 58 indicators were identified: 62% improved significantly, 38% did not show any variation, no indicator worsened after intervention. In particular, systolic blood pressure (SBP) showed a statistically significant improvement in 70.0 % of trials in which was considered while did not show any difference in the rest. The presence of a pharmacist in the team show a statistically significant improvement on SBP (p = 0,002) in patients with hypertension while no statistically significant effect is observed on glycated hemoglobin (p = 0,193) in diabetics. The results support that IPC contributes to positive patient, provider and institutional level outcomes, in particular for chronic conditions. Future research should focus on the inclusion of patient/caregivers in the collaborative team, and on the role of interprofessional education (IPE) on collaborative practice in the management of the patient with chronicity. Key messages IPC is an innovative strategy to address the complex health needs of chronic populations. Further studies are needed to evaluate the role of IPE in achieving better IPC and improving chronic patients’ outcomes.
