This paper presents findings from a multi-case study of social studies educators which focused on the impact of institutional requirements on social studies teaching as phronesis. The concept of phronesis, or practical wisdom of human values, occupies a central space in this study, acting as both the theoretical and methodological framework. As a theoretical framework, Aristotle’s articulation of phronesis, and its distinction from the intellectual states of episteme and techne, guided the development of research questions and acted as an entry point for analysis of participant data concerning the impact of school-based requirements on social studies teaching. As a methodological framework, this study is grounded in Flyvbjerg’s (2001) argument for a “phronetic social science,” which envisions social science work as contributing to dialogue about human values, rather than a vain attempt of strict prediction and explanation. I merge these considerations with the value and utility of qualitative case study, which functions as the study design. Based on this framing, I sought to gain an in-depth understanding of the role that schools play in the development or control of teacher’s practical wisdom and socially-minded educational goals. Answers to this question are discussed through the examination of four different cases of social studies teachers from Alabama. Through a thematic analysis of qualitative data, I illustrate that institutional teaching requirements largely constrained “phronetic” possibilities for social studies education. The major findings indicate that, rather than supporting professional teacher judgments and fostering socially conscious goals, school-based requirements pushed participants to implement technical pedagogies in order to meet pre-determined outcomes. I conclude with a discussion that critically evaluates the nature of contemporary educational reform and considers the place of social studies in this climate.

This study intends to describe the impact of multicultural education in Social Studies Learning of junior high school. This type of research is qualitative with the method descriptive. The subject of this research is the component (Teacher and students) Middle-School 6 Sidoarjo. Based on the results of data analysis and discussion shows that Multicultural education in practice for social studies education learning in the classroom runs smoothly and students can be carefully conditioned to have an effect and have an impact, among others: Be tolerant in accepting all differences, because the difference is God's grace, does not discriminate (discriminate) friends who different beliefs, do not force others in terms of beliefs (religion), give freedom to others to choose beliefs (religion), do not interfere with other people with different beliefs when they worship, keep on interacting and behaving well with people who have different beliefs in worldly matters, respect others who are worshiping, do not hate and hurt the feelings of someone who has different beliefs or opinions from us. The purpose of this engaged public sociology study was to use social science to bring resident stakeholders into the process of governing pollution production in a rural community. The community has cancer clusters. Residents have concerns about direct exposure to pollution production in their neighborhood by a steel recycling plant that has been cited numerous times for environmental violations. The facility has been under voluntary remediation since 2009, but neighborhood residents were marginalized from the governance process. This case study details how social science was used to bring neighborhood residents’ concerns about direct exposure to toxic air pollution into remediation governance. A curricula-as-research model was developed to provide an engagement framework that guided the case study as it progressed through a series of six stages over five years. The principal investigator maintained this collaboration by integrating the project into courses, securing small grants, developing an affordable air pollution monitoring method, and convening multiple community meetings. The air monitoring results are analyzed and discussed. Finally, the impact of the case study on the company, the state environmental management agency, local government, the nonprofit partner, and residents’ sense of human agency is evaluated.

SILVA, S. S.ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE IN SMALL HYDROSYSTEMS: THE CASE OF CRUZETA HYDROSYSTEM  2 ABSTRACT This study proposes a methodological framework for assessing the impact of climate change on small hydrosystems, presenting a case study, able to clarify adaptation strategies for human societies that undergo or may undergo similar situations. The results from the assessment of climate for Cruzeta hydrosystem, located in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, demonstrate the possibility of future scenarios drier than today, with 90% to 80% reduction in warranties.  This fact shows that hydrosystems to increase their resilience need to have adaptation strategies, flexible institutional arrangements, conflict management and provision of infrastructure. Keywords: Adaptation, risk and climate.

The purpose of the study was to examine the impacts of COVID-19 and its implications for teaching Social Studies as integrated curriculum. This was done through review of a number of articles relating to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as Social Studies as integrated discipline. Historical background and the effects of the pandemic specifically in Ghana have been outlined in the paper. Being integrated curriculum, the author argues that the pandemic offers unique opportunity for Social Studies educators and teachers of the subject to demonstrate their understanding of the concept of integration with respect to the impacts of the pandemic. There is no denying the fact that the pandemic had tremendous impacts on all facets of human life including economic, social, psychological, political, religious, and health. Based on the literature review, it is recommended that educators and teachers in the field of Social Studies should draw connection between the COVID-19 and the Social Science subjects. In so doing, it would promote wholistic understanding of the COVID-19 pandemic.
