Most of the pictures in general mathematics are algebraic sets. Indeed, even the first figures taught in class 1 of elementary school are already algebraic sets or part of algebraic sets, such as lines and segments. Therefore, knowing with certainty the properties of algebraic sets is very important for good teaching of high school mathematics, and it is essential to teach them better. To give suggestions and help teachers teach mathematics more effectively, in this report, we will present the Zariski topology, some of their most important properties and the methods to teach algebraic sets.

It is interesting to note that in contrast to the now apparent decrease in Elementary School enrollments, our Seccondary Schools continue to grow. Statistics show an increase of nearly 2,000,000 pupils during the past decade, to an all time high of 6,650,000 in 1940-41. We are told that the tendency for an increasingly large proportion of our young people to remain in school through the Senior High School will doubtless maintain this high enrollment for some time to come.

Since 1973 one of the most popular activities of the Hubbard High School (Chicago) chapter of Mu Alpha Theta bas been its annual Elementary School Mathematics Contest. The competition, which involves eighth-grade students from neighboring public and parochial elementary schools, is patterned after a once-popular Chicago area television quiz show called “It's Academic.” In 1980 sixteen schools and forty-eight students, selected by their classroom teachers, participated in this contest.
