The preparation of MgCl2/AC composite and its adsorption behavior of azo dye from aqueous solution were investigated. The pore size of the new kinds of adsorbent increased with increasing the dosage of MgCl2 solution, while specific surface area decreased. The removal rate of Weak Acid Red 2R from aqueous solution on the MgCl2/AC composite was 93.4 % at the optimum conditions of the preparation: activated carbon with 2 M MgCl2 solution at 110°C for 2 h.

The decoloration of an azo dye reactive brilliant orange (X-GN) by a heterogeneous Fenton system using activated carbon–FeOOH catalyst (AC–FeOOH) and H2O2 was studied. Under typical conditions (pH 7.0, H2O2 10 mmol/L, AC–FeOOH 1.0 g/L and 30 °C), 98% decoloration rate of X-GN was achieved in 240 min. The decoloration efficiency of X-GN increased with higher H2O2 dosage, higher AC–FeOOH dosage and higher reaction temperature. Though the catalytic reaction was an acid driven process, a sufficient decoloration performance was still obtained in neutral and alkaline conditions. Kinetic studies suggested that the decoloration of X-GN followed a pseudo-first order reaction and the activation energy was 17.2 kJ/mol. Iron leaching from AC–FeOOH occurred during the reaction, but the decoloration efficiency of X-GN was still higher than 80% after four runs. The AC–FeOOH has a good stability and can be reused. Besides, the generation of massive iron-containing sludge can be avoided after reaction as the remaining ferric ions in the solution were less than 1 mg/L in this combined H2O2 and AC–FeOOH process.

The supported TiO2 photocatalyst has been reported for the photodegradation of different organic pollutants. These supported TiO2 photocatalysts include metal and non metal doped TiO2 photocatalysts. The photodegradation can be explained in terms of adsorption. The adsorption of the dye is an significant and obvious parameter in the photodegradation process. The photodegradation is directly related to the adsorbed quantities of the pollutant onto the surface of adsorbant. Adsorption of Orange II, an azo dye has been reported using different adsorbents like fly ash, activated carbon and porous titanium dioxide. This review presents a comparison of maximum adsorption capacities (Qm; mg.g–1) and Langmuir adsorption constant (Kads; L.mg–1) for the adsorbents reported in previous studies.
