Abstract The new Fe-Cr-Mo ferritic stainless steels are reviewed with an emphasis on corrosion behavior. The properties of commercial steels are outlined showing how these alloys can be divided into general purpose (18Cr-2Mo), moderately severe service (26Cr-1Mo), and premium service (29Cr-4Mo) materials. The stress corrosion cracking (SCC), intergranular corrosion, pitting, crevice corrosion, and general corrosion of the Fe-Cr-Mo ferritic stainless steels in general is discussed. The influence of nickel on the corrosion resistance and toughness of ferritic stainless steels is considered.

Abstract Carlson Alloy 904L is a 21Cr-24Ni-4.5Mo-1.5Cu low-carbon austenitic alloy that resists corrosion in a wide range of both oxidizing and reducing environments. It has good pitting and crevice-corrosion resistance and eliminates stress-corrosion cracking in most common chloride environments. The alloy resists intergranular corrosion in postwelded or stress-relieved conditions because of its very low carbon content. Abstract It is proposed that the various localized forms of corrosion (pitting, stress corrosion cracking, intergranular corrosion, crevice corrosion, filiform corrosion, tuberculation, and exfoliation) have the common feature of local acidification by hydrolysis. The acidity is viewed as having a responsible role in the self-perpetuating character of these corrosion forms. Three possible benefits of this rationale are offered.

This paper presents a study of crevice corrosion and environmentally assisted cracking (EAC) mechanisms in UNS S32205 and S32304 which were cold drawn to tensile strengths of approximately 1300 MPa. The study utilized a combination of electrochemical methods and slow strain rate testing to evaluate EAC susceptibility. UNS S32205 was not susceptible to crevice corrosion in stranded geometries at Cl⁻ concentrations up to 1.0 M in alkaline and carbonated simulated concrete pore solutions. UNS S32304 did exhibit a reduction in corrosion resistance when tested in a stranded geometry. UNS S32205 and S32304 were not susceptible to stress corrosion cracking at Cl⁻ concentrations up to 0.5 M in alkaline and carbonated solutions but were susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement with cathodic overprotection.

Three groups of 0.04C-16Cr ferritic stainless steels, with boron quality score of 0ppm, 16ppm and 26ppm, were smelted by a vacuum induction furnace. The chemical soak method, the tafel polarization curve method and the anode circular polarization curve method were used to research their general corrosion and intergranular corrosion resistance. The results showed that both general corrosion and intergranular corrosion of the casted 0.04C-16Cr ferritic stainless steels happened in dilute H2SO4 medium. The resuluts of electrochemical and chemical soak indicate that the addition of B improves intergranular corrosion resistance of 0.04C-16Cr stainless steel, moreover, the intergranular corrosion resistance increases with an increasing content of B. The addtion of B makes the general corrosion rate and self-corrosion current density of the 0.04 C-16Cr stainless steel reduced at active dissolution region in dilute sulphuric acid medium, so the general corrosion resistance of the 0.04 C-16Cr stainless steel is improved. The blunt-dimensional current density of the steel with 26ppm B is the lowest and the passivation zone of it is wider, so the stability of passive film and protection capacity of the steel with 26ppm B are the best. The electrochemical characteristics of general corrosion coincided with the results of soak corrosion.
