A new Contourhook terminal device was introduced to the Central Development Unit (CDU) in Australia through the therapist attending the exhibit at the ISPO World Congress, London, September, 1983. Ten upper limb amputees, who were experienced prosthetic users were selected for the evaluation. The patients were asked to attend the CDU to perform selected activities; 7 activities were designed to simulate hand prehension and 17 were bimanual activities of daily living. The activities were performed using the conventional split hook terminal device. The same activities were repeated using the Contourhook terminal device. Performances and patients' comments were recorded. In general the Contourhook was found to compare unfavourably with conventional terminal devices, aspects of the brochure were misleading and all patients preferred their previously worn terminal device.

Background Previous studies have reported a relationship between upper limb motor function and activities of daily living. However, their relationship after removing the influence of lower limb motor function has not been clarified. Objective This study aimed to investigate the relationship between Fugl-Meyer assessment upper limb and total Functional Independence Measure motor score and between Fugl-Meyer assessment upper limb and each item contained in Functional Independence Measure motor score after eliminating the influence of the motor function of the affected lower limb. Methods This retrospective cross-sectional study included 58 subacute stroke patients. To investigate the relationship between the Fugl-Meyer assessment upper limb and total Functional Independence Measure motor score before and after removing the influence of Fugl-Meyer assessment lower limb, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient and partial correlation analysis were used. Additionally, the relationship between Fugl-Meyer assessment upper limb and each item of Functional Independence Measure motor score after removing the influence was assessed. Results Before removing the influence of Fugl-Meyer assessment lower limb, Fugl-Meyer assessment upper limb was strongly correlated with total Functional Independence Measure motor score (r = 0.74, p < 0.001). However, it became weak after removing the influence (r = 0.27, p = 0.04). Regarding each item of Functional Independence Measure motor score, Fugl-Meyer assessment upper limb was correlated with grooming (r = 0.27, p = 0.04), bathing (r = 0.28, p = 0.03), dressing upper body (r = 0.33, p = 0.01), dressing lower body (r = 0.31, p = 0.02), and stair-climbing (r = 0.31, p = 0.02) after removing the influence. Conclusion These findings suggest that the relationship between the upper limb motor function and activities of daily living is strongly influenced by lower limb motor function.

Background and Purpose: Motor tests performed at stroke onset have been shown to predict the recovery of upper limb motor impairment. Less is known about upper limb recovery at the level of functional activity or of participation and how spatial neglect may influence the integration of the upper limb in the activities of daily living (ADL). Our objective was to investigate whether the initial severity of spatial neglect may predict upper limb use in ADL. Methods: Eighty-two patients with a right-hemispheric stroke (RHS) were prospectively included in the study. They were assessed twice in the acute/subacute and in the subacute/chronic phases (mean time interval of 45 days) after stroke. The Catherine Bergego Scale (CBS) was used to quantify the influence of spatial neglect on the ADL. Contralesional upper limb use in the ADL was evaluated with the Lucerne international classification of function, disability and health-based Multidisciplinary Observation Scale. Hand strength was measured using the Jamar, dexterity with the Nine Hole Peg test, and tactile perception using the stereognosis subtest of the Nottingham Sensory Assessment. Cognitive functions were assessed with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Results: Regression analyses revealed that spatial neglect is an independent and a significant predictor of upper limb outcome. A CBS score of ≤5 at the time of admission to neurorehabilitation care was highly predictive for good upper limb use in the ADL 45 days later. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that spatial neglect severity, as observed in the ADL, is a significant and an independent predictor of upper limb outcome. Neglect therapy is thus needed to further improve contralesional upper limb use in the ADL in RHS patients.

A novel 5-DOF upper limb rehabilitation robot, which can implement single joint and multi-joint complex motions and provide activities of daily living (ADL) training for hemiplegic patients, was presented. The solutions of the robot’s kinematics equation were set up by the method of D-H according to the 5-DOF rehabilitation robot for upper limb. Based on the software of ADAMS, the mechanism was simulated and analyzed. Thus the movement of robot is determinate in a certain condition of importation. It offered important data for the trajectory planning and the actual intellective control of rehabilitating robot.

The measurement and analysis of human motion during the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is widely used in rehabilitation, ergonomics, diagnosis, and bionics etc. By using American PolhemusTMelectromagnetic tracking system, the human upper limb motions of 6 objects performing 12 basic actions of ADLs were measured. Then the joint angle ranges of human upper limb were obtained by upper limb motion analysis system developed by ourselves. The results can provide reference for complete, standardized Chinese adult human upper limb kinematics parameters.
