Conservation of resources such as bandwidth, energy and memory are of a concern in Resource Constrained Networks (RCNs). Wireless mobile devices, especially low cost devices are stifled by the limited resources such as battery power, screen size, input, memory and processors. The low cost wireless mobile devices penetrating the developing world market demand for a cost effective messaging format that fits within the constrained wireless environment. Reduction of verbosity is considered to be one of the most effective steps in controlling the resource consumption in RCNs. This chapter presents a method for optimizing resource consumption by the use of a new messaging format with less verbosity. The proposed format is based on YAML Ain´t Markup Language (YAML), which is further enhanced with message level security specifications.

Knowing vehicle sideslip angle accurately is critical for active safety systems such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC). Vehicle sideslip angle can be measured through optical speed sensors, or dual-antenna GPS. These measurement systems are costly (∼$5k to $100k), which prohibits wide adoption of such systems. This paper demonstrates that the vehicle sideslip angle can be estimated in real-time by using two low-cost single-antenna GPS receivers. Fast sampled signals from an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) compensate for the slow update rate of the GPS receivers through an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). Bias errors of the IMU measurements are estimated through an EKF to improve the sideslip estimation accuracy. A key challenge of the proposed method lies in the synchronization of the two GPS receivers, which is achieved through an extrapolated update method. Analysis reveals that the estimation accuracy of the proposed method relies mainly on vehicle yaw rate and longitudinal velocity. Experimental results confirm the feasibility of the proposed method.

This chapter introduces the concept of Mobile Geographical Information Systems (Mobile GIS) as an evolution of conventional GIS to being available on wireless mobile devices such as smart phones. The evolution of the technology and its applications are charted in this chapter. The main elements of Mobile GIS are then discussed. This focuses on: GIS servers; wireless mobile telecommunication networks; wireless mobile devices; location-awareness technology; and gateway services. This is followed by a discussion of the main features in terms of the services and usage of Mobile GIS: mobility; real-time connectivity; location-awareness; broadened usage. Mobile Geographical Information Systems are an important facilitating technology for Location-Based Services (LBS). A range of applications of Mobile GIS for smart phones are described. The chapter closes with a discussion of the prospects and challenges for Mobile GIS. Challenges derive from four broad areas: limitations that derive from the technologies being used; areas of GIScience that still need to be adequately researched; users; and business models for a sustainable presence.

Embedded systems are supporting the trend of moving away from centralised, high-cost products towards low-cost and high-volume products; yet, the non-functional constraints and the device heterogeneity can lead to system complexity. In this regard, Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is the best methodology for developing a loosely coupled, dynamic, flexible, distributed, and cost-effective application. SOA relies heavily on services, and the Semantic Web, as the advanced form of the Web, handles the application complexity and heterogeneity with the help of ontology. With an ever-increasing number of similar Web services in UDDI, a functional description of Web services is not sufficient for the discovery process. It is also difficult to rank the similar services based on their functionality. Therefore, the Quality of Service (QoS) description of Web services plays an important role in ranking services within many similar functional services. Context-awareness has been widely studied in embedded and real-time systems and can also play an important role in service ranking as an additional set of criteria. In addition, it can enhance human-computer interaction with the help of ontologies in distributed and heterogeneous environments. In order to address the issues involved in ranking similar services based on the QoS and context-awareness, the authors propose a service discovery framework for distributed embedded real-time systems in this chapter. The proposed framework considers user priorities, QoS, and the context-awareness to enable the user to select the best service among many functional similar services.

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) is a collection of wireless mobile devices that dynamically communicates with each other as a self-configuration without the need of centralized administration or fixed infrastructure. In this paper, we interested to introduce the different broadcast methods based on the probabilistic scheme which is simple implement code with speed broadcast and to reduce a storm broadcast problem effects and to alleviate redundancy through rebroadcast by using different routing protocols such as (AODV, DSR, LAR, PAR) that we interested in MANETs.
