The community services sector is the largest provider of non-profit human services in Australia. This sector has experienced considerable growth as a consequence of public policy and sector reforms introduced by successive governments over the past two decades. These reforms have seen the introduction of private sector managerialist agendas, outsourcing of government services and competitive tendering processes. As the community sector has grown governments have sought to consolidate program funding mechanisms, simplify contracting out arrangements and encourage collaboration and formal partnerships through national tender processes. In recent years there has been significant evidence of governments actively encouraging formal intrasectoral partnerships and consortia in program tenders. While there is a considerable body of overseas and national literature on partnerships and collaboration, the predominant focus is on intersectoral relationships such as public-private partnerships between government and the business sector or government contracted services to the community sector. This research responds to a call for more local research on partnerships and collaboration in the Australian community service sector. A case study approach was used to examine the key drivers of intrasectoral partnership and collaborative practice in the context of the literature within business, government and community sectors. The study found prior interactions between organisations significantly influenced whether these drivers were viewed as strong, weak or ambiguous. The findings contribute to the understanding of intrasectoral partnerships and collaboration in the community sector in that prior relationships understood as parallel (i.e. disengaged) or cooperative in nature, can be predictive of potential partnership relationships and outcomes.

The literature on podcasts in learning mainly focuses on student experiences in formal educational settings, while questions related to nontraditional students in freely-available language programs provided by non-profit organizations remain unexplored. Taking a case study approach, this research examines how podcasting enhances the English learning experiences of students in an English as a Second Language (ESL) course offered by a non-profit organization that provides community services to immigrants in Canada. This chapter discusses instructional and organizational benefits as well as the challenges of applying podcasts in language training. By triangulating the experiences of the students, instructor, and program coordinators, we are able to examine the effectiveness of such a program and offer recommendations for similar programs in the future.

Lesson learning is a well-known and crucial organizational tool that serves many organizations wishing to improve their performance. This chapter describes a knowledge management (KM)-based model, improving the level of learning and of the lessons learned with the goal of reducing repeated mistakes as well as recreating their successes. The key features of the model were the base of a research conducted using a case study approach implemented at the Welfare Division of the Jerusalem Municipality's Community Services Administration. The implemented model, based on KM ideas, added two significant stages to the process of debriefing—refining the lessons learned and transforming them into lessons that are managed in an independent database—as well as an additional stage, which was comprised of active processes of integrating the lessons into the organizational work.

The Australian community radio sector is a rich source of information for researchers, activists and practitioners working to support and develop community broadcasting worldwide. With a 46-year history, it represents an established and enduring third tier of independent local broadcasting with over 450 non-profit radio services legislated to provide opportunities for community engagement and participation. This article focuses on the political, economic and institutional factors involved in a change of ownership and management of Radio Adelaide, the countrys longest running community radio station. The process illustrates the impact and effects of the non-profit industrial complex as stations struggle for financial survival and independence in an increasingly competitive, corporatized environment. It is a case study which questions the contemporary understanding of a strong and resilient sector, highlighting themes to inform community media research and practice internationally.

This paper examines the impact of minimum wages using a survey data of services sector in Sarawak. Dependent t-test and regression analysis were conducted to determine the impact of minimum wages on employment. Although minimum wages increased salary, but the impact on employment is very small. Most of the findings do not support minimum wages reduce employment, in contrast with competitive labour market prediction.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand and show how public relations contributed to enhancing the visibility of Croatian non-profit organization Foundation “Croatia for Children” and its activities within its stakeholders, as well as how public relations contributed to the mobilization of target publics in Foundation’s activities. Design/methodology/approach Using a single case study approach, data were collected over a 12-month period. Quantitative and qualitative media research was applied in order to compare visibility of Foundation in the period before and after the strategic communication campaign. Findings Strategic communication campaign enhanced the visibility of Foundation “Croatia for Children” in national and local Croatian media and positioned it as the primary instance for children without an adequate parental care and children in need. However, local media devoted more attention comparing to the national media. All children wishes (1,000) were fulfilled by mobilizing the target publics. Research limitations/implications The results derived from this case study cannot be generalized since they are based on a single case in one country. Practical implications This study can serve as a starting point for another research about the role and importance that public relations have in enhancing the visibility of non-profit organizations. Originality/value The results of this study point to the role and importance public relations have in the non-profit sector in order to proactively communicate with all stakeholders in society.

This study identifies factors that support the sustainability of interventions implemented to enhance responses to alcohol and other drug misuse in Australian community health settings. Eight completed projects that had received time-limited funding were sampled to reflect a mix of project types, contexts and success in meeting funding objectives. Projects were investigated using a case study approach involving thematic analysis. Project records were analysed and interviews were conducted with stakeholders to identify intervention elements that continued after funding ceased, and factors that supported this sustainability. Key factors identified were: embedding changes in the operations of the agency; filling a critical gap in the sector; building support from key individuals and agencies; and planning realistically for future ownership. We argue that complexity theory provides a framework to understand both the context-bound nature of intervention sustainability and differences within the literature as to how sustainability is typologised. Each factor associated with intervention sustainability identified in this study reflects an astute understanding of project context and a capacity to adapt. These factors could assist people designing interventions with time-limited funding to maximise ongoing impact of interventions. They should optimally be implemented within an overall approach of flexibility and sensitivity to context.

<p>This research focuses on the Kāpiti Coast District community social services sector, exploring their experience of the 2008 economic and central government social policy changes. The recession and changing social policies increased pressure on the sector, at the same time as they were responding to increased stress and uncertainty in their communities. The research became an opportunity to give voice to the Kāpiti Coast community social services sector. The research was undertaken from a constructionist perspective, using critical inquiry and case study approaches. The research is presented in an approachable way, as it is hoped that the learning will be used by both the community sector and local government to help improve the way they work together. After setting the scene, the methodology used to listen to the Kāpiti Coast community social services sector is explained. The focus then moves onto the sector. Next, the themes that emerged from the data collected during the research are explored. To increase understanding of these themes, a number of theoretical perspectives are used, which have been selected across a range of disciplines, drawing most strongly on the social work discipline. The voice of the participants has been given primacy at all times; which is in line with the intention of the research, which is to empower the Kāpiti Coast community social services sector. It was helpful to delve into the triangle of relationships: the community social services sector, central and local government, and understand these relationships better. The way that the Kāpiti Coast community social services sector perceives itself, and how it works together and with others, proved a very interesting area of research. The research concludes that listening to the sector on their own terms is a way of addressing the power imbalance and an important step in improving the relationship between the sector and local government. Creating a bridge between the sectors can enable good place-based work to occur to improve social wellbeing in the Kāpiti Coast communities.</p>

The mosque, a place of worship for Muslims, is a non-profit entity that receives public funds. The mosque should manage, record, and report the receipt and use of mosque funds in an Islamic and accountable manner. This study aims to identify and develop a mosque accounting information system that is per the reporting standards of non-profit organizations and meets sharia compliance. The observed object of this study (hereinafter referred to the X Great Mosque) is one of the great mosques in Central Java Province. This study employs qualitative methods, a case study approach, with data sources of seven participants, including treasurer, secretary, accounting and financial staff, the heads of ketakmiran, education, and social, assets and maintenance, and business affairs programs. This study found that the X Great Mosque carries out accounting information systems properly according to the reporting standards of the non-profit organization. However, the accounting information system at the X Great Mosque, as part of Islamic accounting, has not fully met Sharia compliance because it has not separated in recording and reporting the restricted and unrestricted funds.
