The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate six parents and fifteen hybrids through half-diallel mating system to study general and specific combining ability effects and genetic analysis for various yield and yield attributing characters. Six parents viz., Arka Anamika (P1), Thanvi 66 (P2), Villupuram Local (P3), Dhaanya (P4), Ankur 41 (P5) and Varsha Uphar (P6) were crossed in half-diallel fashion at the Plant Breeding Farm, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai University. Resulting fifteen hybrids along with their parents were evaluated for their combining ability. Observations were recorded on single plant basis. The observations were made on characters namely, days to first flowering, plant height at maturity, number of primary branches per plant, number of nodes per plant, number of fruits per plant, number of seeds per fruit, fruit length, fruit girth, single fruit weight and fruit yield per plant. In half-diallel analysis, the variance of the genotype for all the characters were highly significant indicating high genetic variability among the parents studied. The variance due to GCA was higher than the corresponding variance due to SCA for most of the characters except number of fruits per plant, fruit length and fruit girth. The combining ability variance revealed the preponderance of additive gene action for all the characters studied. The parents P1 and P6 were found as good general combiner. Based on the sca effects, the hybrid P1 x P6 considered as the best followed by crosses P2 x P4 and P3 x P4 considered as the better hybrids.

Combining ability and heterosis studies carried out using half diallel method with six parents for nine characters. The analysis revealed that none of the parents was found good general combiner for all the characters consistently, however the parents P2, P3, P4 and P5 were best general combiner’s for yield and flowering traits. The gca variance for node order to first female flower open, fruit length, fruit diameter, flesh thickness, average fruit weight, fruits per plant, yield per plant and TSS was higher than the sca variance. While the days to first female flower open had lower gca value than the sca variance indicating the predominance of non-additive gene effects. Five crosses P1×P4, P3×P6, P4×P2, P5×P3 and P5×P6 found promising and should be maintained for development of future hybrid varieties for their sca effect and desirable level of heterosis.

Eleven morphologically diverse cultivated eggplant accessions were used for hybridization following half diallel mating design to obtain 55 hybrids. Evaluation of hybrids along with the parents was conducted over two locations followed by randomised complete block design with three replications to study gene action and combining ability of 15 morphological and biochemical traits. The analysis of variance indicated highly significant differences among the environments and interaction of genotype and environment, except for fruit length to width ratio. Additive gene effects were significant for the inheritance of these traits and expression of these additive genes were greatly affected by environments. The general combining ability (GCA) was greater than their respective specific combining ability (SCA) for all traits except for fruit yield per plant. High values of GCA and SCA effects for characters of interest were dispersed among different genotypes. From this study it was observed that the best parental line was BT15 based on days to first flowering, total number of fruits per plant, total soluble solids and total phenol content. Besides, the parent BM5 showed good general combining ability effects for fruit yield per plant, fruit length and fruit length to width ratio and the parent BB1 performed good general combining ability for fruit diameter, fruit girth and fruit weight. Besides, other parents showed the best performance for only one trait. On the other hand, the hybrid BT6 × BT15 was reported bearing early flowering with high total phenol content and the hybrid BM9 × BB26 has high fruit yield with high soluble solids. Besides, the hybrid BM9 × BB1 has a high fruit diameter and fruit weight. All other hybrids except for these three (BT6 × BT15, BM9 × BB26 and BM9 × BB1) were shown the best performance for only one trait. Hence, based on the desired trait, the hybrid can be selected for future use after large scale evaluation.

Gentic studies for fruit yield per plant and its attributing traits in brinjal was conducted by following line x tester mating design comprising of seven lines and four testers at Instructional Farm, Junagadh Agricultural University, Junagadh, Gujarat. The analysis of combining ability revealed the predominant role of both additive and non-additive gene effects in the inheritance of fruit yield and its component traits. The genotypes NSR-1, JBG-10-208 and Pant Rituraj displayed high gca effect for fruit yield per plant and some desirable traits like days to 50 % flowering, days to first picking, fruit girth, fruit weight, numbers of primary branches per plant, plant spread and total soluble solids. The estimates of sca effect of the crosses indicated that five hybrids manifested significant and positive sca effect for fruit yield per plant. The crosses JBG-10-208 x GJB-2, ABR-2-23 x GBL-1 and AB-09-1 x GOB-1 were emerged as best specific combinations. The cross JBG-10-208 x GJB-2 was also found good specific combiner for plant height, fruit weight, fruit girth and number of primary branches per plant and also showed maximum per se performance. These hybrids may be exploited for obtaining transgressive segregants toward developing hybrid varieties in brinjal.

Six red sweet pepper genotypes viz., RSPUHF-1, RSPUHF-2, RSPUHF-3, RSPUHF-4, RSPUHF-5 and RSPUHF-7 and their crosses using half-diallel excluding reciprocals were evaluated for combining ability to obtain desired hybrids. Analysis of variance for combining ability revealed that variances due to general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were highly significant for all the characters indicating the importance of additive and non-additive gene effects. RSPUHF-3 (‒1.42* and ‒1.5*) and RSPUHF-7 (‒1.25* and ‒1.54*) were found as reliable combiners for earliness and maturity. Whereas, the parents RSPUHF-1 (0.53*, 0.78*, ‒0.5, 0.12*, 0.25*), RSPUHF-2 (1.49*, 2.19*, 6.41*, 0.63*, 2.21*) and RSPUHF-4 (0.69*, 0.9*, 9.92*, 0.47*, 1.28*) were good general combiners for fruit set per cent, number of fruits per plant, fruit weight, fruit yield per plant and fruit yield per m2. Amongst, the crosses, RSPUHF-3 x RSPUHF-2 (0.95*), RSPUHF-4 x RSPUHF-2 (0.77*) and RSPUHF-5 x RSPUHF-2 (0.86*) were found to be the best specific combinations for increased fruit yield and component characters. Further, on the basis of per se performance it may be identified for release after multi location testing the above hybrids have been found to be the most promising for exploitation of heterosis.

Combining ability and heterosis were studied in a 7×7 half diallel cross in maize for grain yield and yield contributing characters. Significant general and specific combining ability variances were observed for all the characters studied. The significant estimates of GCA and SCA variances suggested the importance of both additive and non-additive gene actions for the expression studied traits. In these studies, variances due to SCA were higher than GCA for all charactesr, which revealed the predominance of non additive gene action (dominance and epistasis) for controlling these traits. Parents P1 and P4 were excellent general combiner for days to tasseling and silking while P1 and P5 for early maturity. P4 for short height and, P4 and P7 for higher thousand kernel weight. The parents P4 and P6 having good combining abilities for yield. Heterosis estimation was carried out using two commercial varieties NK40 and 900MG. When standard commercial check NK40 was used, the percent heterosis for kernel yield varied from -51.39 to 12.53%. Among the 21 F1s, 3crosses exhibited significant positive heterosis for kernel yield. The highest heterosis was exhibited by the cross P4×P6 (12.43%), P6×P7 (10.89%) and P2×P3 (9.87%) respectively. Compared with 900MG as check, the percent heterosis for kernel yield varied from -53.73 to 7.01%. Among the 21 F1s, none of the crosses exhibited significant positive heterosis for kernel yield. The highest heterosis were exhibited by the crosses P4×P6 (7.01%), P6 x P7 (5.55%) and P2×P3 (4.57%). The crosses showed significant positive SCA values could be used for variety development after verifying them across the agro-ecological zones of Bangladesh.Bangladesh J. Agril. The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur from May to August 2003. Combining ability effects were estimated for yield and component traits in a 8 x 8 diallel design excluding reciprocals in tomato. The variances for general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were highly significant indicating the presence of additive as well as non-additive gene effects in the traits studied. The relative magnitude of these variances indicated that additive gene effects were more prominent for all the characters under study. The tomato genotype P1 (TM051) proved to be the best general combiner for yield followed by P2 (TM053) and the combinations P1xP3, P1xP5 and P5xP7 were identified as the best specific combiner for earliness, yield per plant, number of fruits per plant and individual fruit weight.

Forty two hybrids generated by crossing three testers with fourteen lines were studied along with parents for studying heterosis and gene action for days to first flowering, days to 50 percent flowering, fruit weight, fruit length, plant height, number of seeds per fruit, 100-seed weight and fruit yield per plant during rainy season and summer season of 2002-03 at Department of Horticulture, Indira Gandhi Agricultural University, Raipur, Chhattisgarh, India. The most heterotic combinations were VRO-6 x Parbhani Kranti, VRO-4 x Parbhani Kranti, Daftari-1 x Arka Abhaya and Kaveri Selection x Ankur Abhaya for fruit yield per ptant. The sca variances for days to fruit flower, days to 50 percent flowering, fruit weight, fruit length, plant height, number of seeds per fruit and 100-seed weight were higher than so gca variance so there is a preponderance of non-additive gene action. The gca variances was greater than sca variances for fruit yield per plant indicating preponderance of additive gene action for this trait. Overall, the results discussed above are quite indicative of the fact that hybrid okra has great potentialities of maximizing fruit yield in Chhattisgarh plains.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjar.v32i3.544Bangladesh J. Estimation of combining ability by half diallel analysis and magnitude of heterosis was conducted at Section of Rabi Cereals, C. S. A. University of Agriculture Science and Technology, Kanpur, UP, in a set of 10 parents received from Economic Botanist Region, Section of Rabi Cereals, Kanpur by making 45 cross combinations evaluated during winter and Rabi 2012-13 in RBD with three replications. The data on nine characters viz. days to 50 % flowering, Plant height, No. of tillers/plant, Spike length/plant, No. of grains/main spike, Days to maturity, 1000-grain weight and Grain yield/plant were utilized for present study. On the basis of GCA effects across eight charactersK9423 and K9533 (-0.76) are good and desirable for days to 75% flowering for crop improvement, grain yield per plant observed for PBW502 and PBW343. The most promising crosses showing significantly positive SCA effects for yield per plant K9423xHD2285and PBW502xPBW343, days to maturity is showing significantly negative SCA effect for NW2036xHD2285 (-9.68). Heterosis is estimated highest over better parent for yield per plant was HD2285xK9533 (16.15). These crosses should be exploited for further advancement in breeding programme for HYVs and early maturity, simultaneously.

A half diallel set of five parents and their 10 F1’s were studied to determine the combining ability and magnitude of heterosis for eight important characters in snakegourd at the experimental field of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University during April to July, 2004. Combining ability analysis revealed that both general and specific combining ability variances were significant for all the characters except fruit diameter and fruit yield per plant. Predominance of additive gene action was noted for all the characters except days to first female flower where non-additive gene action was predominant. Parent P1 was the best general combiner for fruit yield and some yield contributing characters. Among the crosses P2  X P3, P1  X P2 and P1  X P4 were the best specific combiner for fruit yield and some of yield contributing characters. Both positive and negative heterosis was obtained of which few hybrids showed desirable and significant values. P2  X P5 showed the highest significant mid parental heterotic value for earliness and high yield whereas, P1  X P2, P2  X P3, P2  X P5 and P3  X P4 showed the highest significant better parent heterotic effect for earliness and high yield. Six inbred lines of maize were crossed in this study by using half – diallel analysis method , during spring season of 2017, to produce fifteen F1 crosses. The parents and crosses were cultivated during fall season of 2017 by using R.C.B.D with three replications to determine heterosis, general and specific combining ability effects and gene action . Significant differences were found among parental and their crosses for all the traits . The results were showed that the hybrid ( Zm - 1× Zm - 5) had the highest heterosis in grain yield.plant-1 (113.4%). The hybrid (ART-B-17x SYN-33) produced highest number rows. ear-1 (17.9) rows, 500 kernel weight (112.9) gm and grain yield.plant-1 (214.7) gm . The values  of  specific combining ability variances were more than the general combining ability variances for all the traits, indicating that non-additive gene action was responsible for inheritance of all the traits. The values of the broad sense heritability for all characters were higher and  average degree of dominance was exceeded one for all the traits . Results indicated that some inbreds could be used in breeding  program to develop single crosses which have  higher grain yield because all the traits  under over dominance gene action
