Objective. To study the effectiveness of liquid cytological diagnosis of bladder cancer and its local relapses using the Cellprep Plus technology as an example.Materials and methods. We analyzed outpatient records of patients with urothelial pathology (n = 806) who underwent a urine cytology exam by the methods of liquid (n = 383) and conventional (n = 423) cytology.Results. The diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of the cytological examination method for diagnosing urothelial carcinoma using the method of liquid cytology have been found to be 93.4 % and 95.4 % respectively, which significantly exceeds the similar indices in the use of the method of conventional cytology – 42.4 % and 93.6 % respectively. The use of the method of liquid cytology considerably increases the accuracy of the cytological examination of bladder pathology and allows obtaining conclusions that coincide with the histological conclusion in 94.0 % of cases. In the use of the method of conventional cytology, the coincidence with histological findings is only 44.6 % (χ2 = 25.08, p < 0.001).Conclusion. The Cellprep Plus liquid technology standardizes the pre-analytical stage and increases the efficiency of the cytological method in the primary diagnosis and monitoring of patients with urothelial pathology. A promising direction of using the method of liquid cytology in the diagnosis of urothelial carcinoma is the development and implementation of the cytological criteria of differential diagnosis between reactive cell atypia and atypia characteristic of a malignant tumor.

The aim of the work was to assess the possibility of the cytological method in the diagnosis of epithelial liver tumors and to determine the cytomorphological criteria in the differential diagnosis of liver carcinomas. The authors analyzed the data of 106 fine-needle aspiration biopsies and 167 smears-prints during cor-biopsy of masses of the liver in patients who were examined at the polyclinic of the oncological dispensary in Nizhny Novgorod in 2016. - 2017 As a result, full-fledged material for cytological examination in the form of smears-prints from cor-biopsy and fine-needle aspiration biopsies was obtained in 75.4% (n=126) and 95.2% (n=101), respectively. The great possibilities of the cytological method are shown: an affirmative diagnosis of the presence of primary or metastatic liver lesions was made in 88.8% (n=112) based on smears of sorbiopsy prints and in 87.1% (n = 88) with fine-needle aspiration biopsies. Typical cytomorphological criteria for primary and metastatic liver carcinomas made it possible to determine the origin of the primary tumor in 56.6% of cases (n=98).

Cytohistological comparisons to the account of the clinical data and revision of cytological and histological preparations on a material received from 21 patients are made. Cytomorphological features of juvenile nevi (Spitz-nevus, Reed-nevus), dysplastic and atypical nevi and early forms of melanoma are described. The establishment at cytological examination of good-quality character of melanocytic defeats at the account of the clinical data could be the basis for appointment laser therapy. At revealing of atypical melanocytes in cytological preparations patients should be referred to specialized oncological institutions for surgical excision of tumor with the subsequent histological examination. Thus cytological examination could be used in dermatological practice as a method of screening pre-malignant melanocytic tumors and skin melanoma.

The results of 205 puncture biopsies of solid and cystic pancreatic lesions performed in 202 patients at the Republican Oncological Dispensary of the Republic of Karelia for a 7-year period (2009-2015) are presented. Informative material for morphological investigation was obtained in 95.5% of cases. A comparison of results of cytological examination of the material from 56 patients with pancreatic lesions with histological data was carried out. The efficiency of the cytological method was 90.6%, sensitivity - 87.8%, specificity - 100%. To determine histological form of tumor in cytological examination of the material of the pancreas was successful in 82.1% of cases.

Cytological examination of conjunctival smears obtained from cats with conjunctivitis can reveal the severity and type of inflammation and diagnose conjunctivitis caused by Chlamydophila felis. The diagnosis of chlamydia was made by the study of material taken from the conjunctival sac with a sterile cotton swab by PCR. Material for cytological examination was taken from these cats. Cytological examination of inclusions interpreted as chlamydial, was detected in all cytologic smears from sick cats, and has not been detected in none of healthy cats. Thus, cytological examination is a convenient, non-invasive, easily feasible method, which is suitable for rapid diagnosis of chlamydial conjunctivitis in cats.

Plasmacytoid urothelial carcinoma (PUC) of the urinary bladder is a rare and aggressive subtype of urothelial carcinoma. Its deceptive morphology is characterized by a discohesive growth of cells with plasmacytoid morphology. Since this tumor might be confused with plasmacytoma, lymphoma, or carcinoma variants, appropriate diagnosis in small biopsy samples could be challenging. This study reports the case of a 53-year-old man who presented with frequent nocturnal urgency, without hematuria. A transurethral bladder and a prostate resection specimen displayed infiltration of neoplastic cells in a spray-like discohesive pattern with occasional formation of small irregular nests and cord-like arrangements. The basic morphology of the tumor cells was plasmacytoid, with eccentric nuclei and eosinophilic cytoplasm. Tumor cells grew through the lamina muscularis mucosae, with splintering of the bladder wall musculature and infiltration of prostatic tissue. They displayed strong and diffuse nuclear reactivity for p53 and GATA3. Eight months after surgery, the patient experienced upper abdominal discomfort. A duodenal biopsy showed infiltration of plasmacytoid atypical cells strongly immunoreactive for GATA3, consistent with the previously diagnosed PUC. The patient died eleven months after the primary diagnosis of his PUC of tumor cachexia losing about 50% of his original body weight, furthermore, with ascites and intraperitoneal tumor spread.

Filariasis is a major concern, particularly in endemic regions. The majority of patients harbouring the parasite may remain asymptomatic for years. Here, we present six patients who were sent for routine cytological examination to rule out neoplastic pathology, in whom cytology identified filarial infestation. The main purposes of our paper are to highlight the importance of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), a cheap and quick investigation to detect the microfilaria from tissue swelling and body fluids, and to point out that clinicians practising in endemic regions should always consider filarial infestation in patients presenting with longstanding swelling.
