The potential of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is playing increasing role in various pedagogical contexts. The necessity to integrate technologies in learning enhances educators’ digital competences is constantly highlighted in education policy documents European Union and national strategic documents and recommendations. Following the advance of digital technologies, the State Border Guard College of Latvia is constantly looking after innovations in ICT and education contexts. Since 2011 Specialized English language e-learning course for border guards is being implemented, other professional e-learning courses are being systematically introduced, currently 8 specialised qualification courses are available, on average 300 border guards graduate e-learning courses annually. Having in mind the continuous advancement of ICT in education contexts as well as the strategic approach of the State Border Guard College to continue the development of e-learning systems author of this article intends to describe the system of e-learning used in border guards’ training, explore and summarize the theory and best practices on using ICT in pedagogical context, educators’ roles in development and implementation of e-learning courses.

Purpose of reviewNeurologists are being asked to offer their services in response to in-flight medical conditions. This review updates the latest understanding of how neurologists should manage in-flight neurologic emergencies should they be called upon to serve. A review of the existing literature was conducted for sharing of best practices in this unique scenario.Recent findingsIn-flight neurologic emergencies are on the rise. This article provides a synthesis of current best practices for in-flight emergencies including epidemiology, airline responsibility, available health care equipment on jetliners, legal ramifications of helping, and pathophysiology of why in-flight neurologic emergencies are so common.SummaryIn-flight neurologic emergencies are common and all physicians are increasingly being asked to respond to in-flight emergencies. Understanding one's responsibility, available equipment, and how to best prevent these scenarios with one's own patients may help to make this complex situation more manageable.

Although recognized as best practice, regular integration of shared decision-making (SDM) approaches between patients and oncologists remains an elusive goal. It is clear that usable, feasible, and practical tools are needed to drive increased SDM in oncology. To address this goal, we convened a multidisciplinary collaborative inclusive of experts across the health-care delivery ecosystem to identify key principles in designing and testing processes to promote SDM in routine oncology practice. In this commentary, we describe 3 best practices for addressing challenges associated with implementing SDM that emerged from a multidisciplinary collaborative: (1) engagement of diverse stakeholders who have interest in SDM, (2) development and validation of an evidence-based SDM tool grounded within an established conceptual framework, and (3) development of the necessary roadmap and consideration of the infrastructure needed for engendering patient engagement in decision-making. We believe these 3 principles are critical to the success of creating SDM tools to be utilized both within and outside of clinical practice. We are optimistic that shared use across settings will support adoption of this tool and overcome barriers to implementing SDM within busy clinical workflows. Ultimately, we hope that this work will offer new perspectives on what is important to patients and provide an important impetus for leveraging patient preferences and values in decision-making.

Objetivo: compreender, dentro das melhores práticas, as experiências de busca por conhecimento e utilização da experiência profissional dos enfermeiros no cuidado da pessoa idosa na Atenção Primária à Saúde. Método: trata-se de um estudo qualitativo, descritivo e exploratório, com 30 enfermeiros atuantes nas Estratégias Saúde da Família. Utilizou-se um instrumento de entrevista semiestruturado. Analisaram-se os dados pela técnica de Análise de Conteúdo na modalidade Análise Temática. Resultados: revelaram-se a busca por conhecimento com outros profissionais e o acesso à rede de internet como fontes de conhecimento. Evidenciou-se a necessidade do estabelecimento de uma rotina de estudos sistematizada e agenda de educação permanente sob a temática do envelhecimento. Conclusão: conclui-se que o estudo confirma que os enfermeiros realizam ações que carecem de notoriedade e que estão preocupados com o impacto de suas ações para o usuário idoso, mas, para que as melhores práticas sejam completamente estabelecidas,  se faz necessária a imersão científica e metodológica dos profissionais e da gestão, além da busca por conhecimento e valorização da experiência, que já coexistem. Data was analyzed using the Content Analysis technique in the Thematic Analysis modality. Results: the search for knowledge with other professionals and access to the internet network as sources of knowledge were revealed. The need to establish a systematic study routine and a permanent education agenda under the theme of aging became evident. Conclusion: it is concluded that the study confirms that nurses perform actions that lack notoriety and that they are concerned with the impact of their actions for the elderly user, but, for the best practices to be completely established, scientific immersion is necessary and methodological approach of professionals and management, in addition to the search for knowledge and appreciation of experience, which already coexist. La necesidad de establecer una rutina de estudio sistemática y una agenda de educación permanente bajo el tema del envejecimiento se hizo evidente. Conclusión: se concluye que el estudio confirma que los enfermeros realizan acciones que carecen de notoriedad y que están preocupados por el impacto de sus acciones para el usuario mayor, pero, para que las mejores prácticas se establezcan por completo, es necesaria la inmersión científica y enfoque metodológico de profesionales y directivos, además de la búsqueda de conocimiento y valoración de la experiencia, que ya coexisten.
