Abstract. The objective of this study was to determine the genetic and non genetic effects on lactation curve traits determined by the incomplete gamma function of Wood (1967) for Holstein-Friesian cows in Morocco. Data analysed included 49262 monthly records of the test-day milk yield from 4888 lactations of 3932 cows at their 1st, 2nd or 3rd parity collected during 1990 and 1999 in 232 herds enrolled in the official milk recording. In general, lactation curve traits (A, B, C, peak time [Tmax], peak milk yield [Ymax], persistency and 305 day milk yield [MY305]) were affected by herd, parity, age at calving, season of calving and year of calving. Heritability estimates were low and varied from 0.01 for parameter A to 0.10 for Ymax. Genetic and phenotypic correlations among traits varied from −0.79 to 1.00 and from −0.80 to 0.96, respectively. Genetic correlations between MY305 and parameter C were negative, but those between MY305 and all the other lactation curve traits were positive. It was concluded that selection for high peak milk yield and persistency will result in higher 305 day milk yield.

Background: Lactation persistency influences cow health and reproduction and has an impact on the feed costs of dairy farms. Objective: To estimate (co)variance components and genetic parameters of 100- and 305-d milk yield, and lactation persistency in Holstein cows in Iran. Methods: Records collected from January 2000 to December 2012 by the Animal Breeding Center of Iran (Karaj, Iran) were used. The following four measures of lactation persistency were used: P21: Ratio of milk yield in the second 100-d in milk (DIM) divided by that of the first 100-d. P31: Ratios of milk yield in the third100-d divided by that of the first 100-d. PW: The persistency measure derived from the incomplete gamma function. PJ: The difference between milk yield in day 60th and 280th of lactation. Results: The estimated heritability of lactation persistency for the three first parities (first, second, and third lactation) ranged from 0.01 to 0.06, 0.02 to 0.10, and 0.01 to 0.12, respectively. Genetic correlations among lactation persistency measures for the three first parities ranged from 0.77 to 0.98, 0.65 to 0.98, and 0.58 to 0.98, respectively; while corresponding values for genetic correlations among lactation persistency with 305-d milk production ranged from 0.18 to 0.63, 0.32 to 0.75, and 0.41 to 0.71, respectively. The estimated repeatability for lactation persistency measures ranged from 0.06 to 0.20. Conclusion: The moderate positive genetic correlation between lactation persistency and 305-d milk yield indicates that selection for increasing milk yield can slightly improve lactation persistency.Key words: dairy cattle, heritability, lactation curve, milk yield, persistency, repeatability. ResumenAntecedentes: La persistencia de la lactancia tiene una gran influencia en la salud, la reproducción y los costos de alimentación de las granjas lecheras. In spite of the impressive advancements observed on both management and genetic factors, udder health still represents one of most demanding objectives to be attained in the dairy cattle industry. Udder morphology and especially teat condition might represent the first physical barrier to pathogens’ access. The objectives of this study were to investigate the genetic component of teat condition and to elucidate its relationship with both milk yield and somatic cell scores in dairy cattle. Moreover, the effect of selection for both milk yield and somatic cell scores on teat condition was also investigated. A multivariate analysis was conducted on 10,776 teat score records and 30,160 production records from 2469 Italian Holstein cows. Three teat scoring traits were defined and included in the analysis. Heritability estimates for the teat score traits were moderate to low, ranging from 0.084 to 0.238. When teat score was based on a four-classes ordinal scoring, its genetic correlation with milk yields and somatic cell score were 0.862 and 0.439, respectively. The scale used to classify teat-end score has an impact on the magnitude of the estimates. Genetic correlations suggest that selection for milk yield could deteriorate teat health, unless more emphasis is given to somatic cell scores. Considering that both at national and international level, the current selection objectives are giving more emphasis to health traits, a further genetic deterioration in teat condition is not expected.

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for measures offertility and several health disorders in dairy cows. Data consisted of 33732 records, of which 9163 were on heifers, on 305-day milk yield, health disorders and inseminations. Measures offertility were calculated from calving and insemination dates and included calving interval, days to first service and conception to first service. Health disorders included milk fever, mastitis and lameness. Genetic and phenotypic (co)variances were estimated using restricted maximum likelihood. Heritability estimates for both health disorders and fertility traits were low, ranging from 0·003 to 0·080. All genetic correlations between 305-day milk yield and health and fertility traits, in cows and heifers together, were antagonistic implying that selection for milk yield may have caused a deterioration in health and fertility. The unfavourable correlation between milk yield and health and fertility traits, plus the economic importance of the latter, suggests that future breeding goals should be expanded to include some health disorders and fertility.

Daily milk weights from 1006 lactations on 775 Holstein-Friesian cows in 42 herds and monthly test-day weights from 102 540 lactations on 73 717 cows in 17 481 herd-year-seasons were used to study the influence of covariances among milk weighings within a lactation on three models for describing the shape of the lactation curve for individual cows. The models included a gamma function, an inverse quadratic polynomial function, and a regression model of yields on day in lactation (linear and quadratic) and on log of 305 divided by day in lactation (linear and quadratic). For each model, several variance-covariance matrices of the observation vector were used. Models were compared on the basis of squared deviations of predicted versus actual milk weights and on the correlation between predicted and actual weights through the lactation averaged over cows. Better predictions were observed when covariances among test-day yields were ignored while models could be ranked regression model, gamma function, and inverse quadratic polynomial function in order of best to worst. Heritability estimates for the parameters of the various models and for 305-d milk yield ranged from 0.11 to 0.30. Genetic correlations were estimated and predictions of correlated responses in 305-d yield from selecting on various combinations of parameters from each method were computed. The best combination of parameters of the gamma function gave a relative efficiency of 74.7% as compared to selection for 305-d yield alone. Key words: Lactation curves, covariances, Holsteins

ABSTRACTThe study was based on 1156 lactation records of 545 Murrah buffaloes. Initial milk yield, peak yield, ascending phase milk yield and days to attain peak daily production, the means of which were 26·7 kg, 10·3 kg, 407 kg and 58·9 days respectively, were all affected by period, season and parity of calving. Heifers recorded the least initial milk yield and peak yield and took the longest time to reach peak production. Peak yield was the most important single factor (R2 = 0·41) in causing variation in 43-week milk yield. The heritability estimates for initial, peak and ascending phase milk yields and days to attain peak yield were 0·35, 0·51, 0·27 and 0·13 respectively, whilst that for 43-week milk yield was 0·18. Peak yield had the highest phenotypic (rP = 0·64) and genetic correlations (ra = 0·68 ± 0·19) with the 43-week milk yield. Other genetic correlations with the 43-week milk yield were low and non-significant. The results indicated that indirect selection for peak yield would be more effective than direct selection for improving the 43-week milk yield in buffaloes.

Abstract The main objective of the study was to determine the effect of transition from a conventional milking system (CMS) to an automatic milking system (AMS) on survival of 6361 Polish Holstein-Friesian cows to second (SL2), third (SL3) and fourth (SL4) lactation as well culling reasons. The cows were born between 2002 and 2015 and calved between 2004 and 2018. All data for the survival analysis and culling reasons of cows in 17 herds during operation of CMS and AMS were extracted from the SYMLEK official milk recording system. Cow survival (SL2, SL3 and SL4) was analysed with multiple logistic regression using the following effects in the model: milking system (MS), first calving season (CS), age at first calving (AFC), ease of first calving (CE), birth of a dead calf at first calving (DC), milk yield (MY) for full first lactation (MY – this effect was ignored in SL2 analysis), herd (H), and MS × H interaction. In the next stage of the study, χ2 test was used to analyse culling reasons of cows (udder diseases, low fertility (infertility and reproductive disorders), locomotor diseases, low milk yield, other diseases (metabolic, digestive and respiratory diseases), accidents and chance events) in the first, second and third lactation and collectively in the first three lactations. Logistic regression analysis indicated a significant effect of MS, AFC, DC on SL2 and SL3, and of MY on SL3 and SL4. Moreover, H and MS × H interaction had a highly significant effect on SL2, SL3, and SL4. Cows used in AMS barns were characterized by significantly worse SL2 and SL3 compared to CMS (odds ratio), by 27.8% and 31.0%, respectively. It was also observed that the effect of switching from CMS to AMS on cow survival was determined by herd membership – in most herds this effect was unfavourable. A distinctly positive effect of milking automation on cow survival (SL2, SL3, SL4) was noted in only one barn (herd) – it was a new barn with a considerably expanded number of milked cows, where the lying area was covered with straw. When analysing the reasons for culling in the first three lactations collectively, it was found that after the AMS system was introduced into the herds, there were increases in the rate of culling for locomotor diseases (by 0.85 percentage points (p.p.)), low milk yield (1.36 p.p.) and other diseases (3.01 p.p.). It was also observed that the automation of milking reduced culling due to udder diseases by 0.37 p.p., low fertility by 3.24 p.p., and accidents and chance events by 1.60 p.p.

The objective of this study was to estimate heritabilities and genetic correlations of lactational and daily somatic cell scores with descriptive and linear type traits in Polish Holstein-Friesian cows. Data were: test-day somatic cell scores and conformation evaluations of 24 599 primiparous cows, daughters of 802 sires. Cows calved from 2006 to 2007. The lactational somatic cell score was calculated as the average of four test-day somatic cell scores at least. The daily somatic cell score was the test-day somatic cell score closest to the date of type evaluation. A multi-trait animal model was used to estimate genetic parameters. (Co)variance components were estimated by a Bayesian algorithm via Gibbs sampling. The heritability of lactational somatic cell score was 0.20 and it was much higher than that of daily somatic cell score (0.13). Heritabilities of type traits were high to moderate for height at rump (0.46), size (0.39), overall conformation score (0.30), two linear rump traits (0.28–0.29) and three linear teat traits (0.26–0.29). The genetic correlation between lactational and daily somatic cell scores was 0.84. In many cases, daily somatic cell score showed higher genetic correlations with type traits than lactational somatic cell score. Descriptive udder and feet and legs scores were genetically correlated negatively with both lactational (–0.22 and –0.20) and daily somatic cell scores (–0.28 and –0.33). Somatic cell traits were genetically correlated positively with rump angle (0.21 and 0.19) and negatively with fore udder height (–0.26 and –0.29), udder depth (–0.23 and –0.17) and central ligament (–0.14 and –0.16). Due to higher heritability, direct selection for lower lactational somatic cell score would be more effective than selection for lower daily somatic cell score. The magnitude of obtained heritabilities and the favourable genetic correlations indicate that the selection utilizing some type traits could improve the resistance to mastitis.

Abstract. Data on 2422 and 27756 Friesian cows in Egypt and Germany, respectively, were used to estimate genetic and non-genetic effects on initial milk yield in 70 days (IMY), 305-day milk yield (305-dMY), lactation period (LP) and calving interval (CI). Data were collected in the period from 1987 to 1992 in Egypt and from 1979 to 1993 in Germany. Least Squares analysis shows the significant effect of season and year of calving and parity on all traits. Least Squares analysis indicates that winter and spring calvers had the higher value in all traits studied than summer and autumn calvers of Friesian cows in Egypt, while in German Friesian cows, the autumn calvers had the higher value in all traits studied than summer and spring calvers. The results show that the milk yield increased with increased lactation Orders. Partial linear and quadratic regression coefficients indicate that age at calving was negatively associated with CI, while it showed positive association with LP and 305-dMY in Friesian cows in Egypt, while in German Friesian cows age at calving was negatively associated with LP and CI, while associated positively with milk yield. Heritabilities were 0.24, 0.22, 0.14 and 0.16 for IMY, 305-dMY, LP and CI, respectively of Friesian cows in Egypt and were 0.34, 0.24, 0.08 and 0.09 for IMY, 305-dMY, LP and CI, respectively in German Friesian cows. All phenotypic and genetic correlations between different traits studied were positive and significant.

In this study, milk yield parameters of Holstein Friesian cows raised at Koçaş State Farm were investigated. The means of lactation milk yield, 305 d milk yield, lactation length and dry period were found as 7046.18 kg, 6588.38 kg, 327.37 d and 67.48 d respectively. Also, estimated heritability’s of same traits were as 0.25, 0.26, 0.07 and 0.03 respectively. The effects of year, season and lactation number on lactation milk yield, 305 d milk yield and lactation length; the effects of calving season and lactation number on dry period were found significantly. In conclusion, data of milk yield traits of Holstein Friesian cows in raised Koçaş State Farm herd were determined well condition within reasonable ranges.
