Explanation of global plasmapause characteristics in the frame of interchange instability mechanism

<p>Recent statistical studies based on CLUSTER, CRRES, and THEMIS satellite data have provided insight into global plasmapause characteristics: start of erosion between 21-07 MLT and eastward azimuthal propagation. The observed plasmapause behavior is found to agree with the theory of the interchange instability mechanism. We present the results of the plasmapause characteristics obtained with simulations based on this mechanism.</p><p>Here we aim to obtain the same plasmapause characteristics that we previously obtained with simulations using real values of geomagnetic Kp index (which are the proxies for the convection electric field), but using synthetic Kp changes. We show that for that, completely unexpected, instead of many combinations of Kp changes occurring at different UT times (generated for instance with Monte Carlo methods), only 3 Kp jumps occurring at one UT time, leads to the same plasmapause characteristics obtained with simulations using the real Kp values. Therefore, two plasmapause datasets are constructed by setting the following input in the simulations: (a) real values of the geomagnetic Kp index, (b) certain types of time-dependent changes in the Kp (Kp jumps). The Kp jumps include sharp Kp increase, sharp Kp decrease, short time burst enhancement (increase-decrease within 3 hours) in Kp and their combinations in order to obtain plumes, shoulders, and notches, the structures most often observed in nature. The modeled plasmapause is cross-correlated with the Kp index at different 1-hour MLT bins.</p><p>We have shown that the cross-correlation curves provide deep insight into the physical processes related to the plasmapause dynamic and evolution. In single events, plasmapause may undergo complex and different dynamics. Here, we show that global plasmapause motions and deformation in time may be simply explained, at least in the statistical sense. Accordingly, we will demonstrate and discuss that three plasmapause structures and their combinations statistically leave the same imprint in the passage through a specific MLT sector as a combination of the plasmapauses created with a large number of the real Kp changes.  </p>

Among the qualities that distinguish dance from other types of human behavior and interaction are the creation and breaking of synchrony and symmetry. The combination of symmetry and synchrony can provide complex interactions. For example, two dancers might make very different movements, slowing each time the other sped up: a mirror symmetry of velocity. Examining patterns of synchrony and symmetry can provide insight into both the artistic nature of the dance, and the nature of the perceptions and responses of the dancers. However, such complex symmetries are often difficult to quantify. This paper presents three methods – Generalized Local Linear Approximation, Time-lagged Autocorrelation, and Windowed Cross-correlation – for the exploration of symmetry and synchrony in motion-capture data as is it applied to dance and illustrate these with examples from a study of free-form dance. Combined, these techniques provide powerful tools for the examination of the structure of symmetry and synchrony in dance.

BACKGROUND Researchers often spend a great deal of time and effort retrieving related journals for their studies and submissions. Authors often designate one article and then retrieve other articles that are related to the given one using PubMed’s service for finding cited-by or similar articles. However, to date, none present the association between cited-by and similar journals related to a given journal. Authors need one effective and efficient way to find related journals on the topic of mobile health research. OBJECTIVE This study aims (1) to show the related journals for a given journal by both cited-by and similarity criteria; (2) to present the association between cited-by and similarity journals related to a given journal; (3) to inspect the patterns of network density indices among clusters classified by social network analysis (SNA); (4) to investigate the feature of Kendall's coefficient(W) of concordance. METHODS We obtained 676 abstracts since 2013 from Medline based on the keywords of ("JMIR mHealth and uHealth"[Journal]) on June 30, 2018, and plotted the clusters of related journals on Google Maps by using MS Excel modules. The features of network density indices were examined. The Kendall coefficient (W) was used to assess the concordance of clusters across indices. RESULTS This study found that (1) the journals related to JMIR mHealth and uHealth are easily presented on dashboards; (2) a mild association(=0.14) exists between cited-by and similar journals related to JMIR mHealth and uHealth; (3) the median Impact Factor were 3.37 and 2.183 based on the representatives of top ten clusters grouped by the cited-by and similar journals, respectively; (4) all Kendall’s coefficients(i.e., 0.82, 0.89, 0.92, and 0.75) for the four sets of density centrality have a statistically significant concordance (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS SNA provides deep insight into the relationships of related journals to a given journal. The results of this research can provide readers with a knowledge and concept diagram to use with future submissions to a given journal in the subject category of Mobile Health Research. AbstractThe contact problem for thermoelectric materials with functionally graded properties is considered. The material properties, such as the electric conductivity, the thermal conductivity, the shear modulus, and the thermal expansion coefficient, vary in an exponential function. Using the Fourier transform technique, the electro-thermo-elastic problems are transformed into three sets of singular integral equations which are solved numerically in terms of the unknown normal electric current density, the normal energy flux, and the contact pressure. Meanwhile, the complex homogeneous solutions of the displacement fields caused by the gradient parameters are simplified with the help of Euler’s formula. After addressing the non-linearity excited by thermoelectric effects, the particular solutions of the displacement fields can be assessed. The effects of various combinations of material gradient parameters and thermoelectric loads on the contact behaviors of thermoelectric materials are presented. The results give a deep insight into the contact damage mechanism of functionally graded thermoelectric materials (FGTEMs).

G-quadruplexes are the non-canonical nucleic acid structures that are preferentially formed in G-rich regions. This structure has been shown to be associated with many biological functions. Regardless of the broad efforts on DNA G-quadruplexes, we still have limited knowledge on RNA G-quadruplexes, especially in a transcriptome-wide manner. Herein, by integrating the DMS-seq and the bioinformatics pipeline, we profiled and depicted the RNA G-quadruplexes in the human transcriptome. The genes that contain RNA G-quadruplexes in their specific regions are significantly related to immune pathways and the COVID-19-related gene sets. Bioinformatics analysis reveals the potential regulatory functions of G-quadruplexes on miRNA targeting at the scale of the whole transcriptome. In addition, the G-quadruplexes are depleted in the putative, not the real, PAS-strong poly(A) sites, which may weaken the possibility of such sites being the real cleaved sites. In brief, our study provides insight into the potential function of RNA G-quadruplexes in post-transcription.

Despite the remarkable interest in smart cities, noticed during the last decade, a consistent comprehension of the concept is not yet fully realized. Various definitions, ranging from exclusively technology-oriented perceptions to broader views, have been introduced, establishing a definitional polyphony and causing lack of semantic interoperability. Empirical evidence witnesses the prevalence of technology-pushed smart city initiatives as well as their failure to meet expectations in several urban domains. When planning “smart,” the relevance of ICT and their applications should be in alignment with spatial and other urban peculiarities and sub-systems' interactions, implying the need for getting deep insight into the city's ontology. The paper focuses on the extension/enrichment of an existing smart city ontology, with concepts and relationships stemming from Mediterranean small and medium-sized cities, in an attempt to outline their main key drivers and their interrelationships and fully grasp the smart city concept in the particular spatial context.

This article reflects on the contribution of qualitative longitudinal research (QLR) to understandings of homeless peoples’ experiences of support service interventions in an era of austerity in the UK. It brings into ‘analytic conversation’ data from qualitative longitudinal evaluations of homeless support projects operated by voluntary sector organisations in Scotland. With fieldwork spanning 2014-2019, the analysis expands the analytical potential of pooling small-scale studies through an interrogation of individuals’ ‘journeys’ through homelessness services and their rough path to ‘home’. By reflecting on our substantive findings, the article explores the added value and challenges of a longitudinal approach. It concludes that while QLR can deliver deep insight into lives lived by vulnerable populations and potentially reduce the distance between policy makers and those affected, its benefits must be balanced against pragmatism and the ethical responsibilities associated with the method.
