This paper tries to show the evidences that indicate how teaching Sociolinguistics can result in a number of valuable outcomes, including helping students understand and appreciate other cultures different from theirs. Sociolinguistics provides useful examples of language usage in different genres, including how culture influences people in using a language. The opportunities of learning other cultures through language will take the students to the higher level of appreciation of the culture of the target language. To determine how this outcome can be achieved in the language classrooms, this paper provides a review of closely connected literature about how to bridge the gap between cultures in particular. However, to increase its completeness and relevance, this paper also provides some research results that reveal how teaching Sociolinguistics has taken its new applicability and importance, and furthermore adds the effects on how students become more proficient and enthusiastic about their learning.

Intensive Arabic Program is one of the activities to develop students knowledge in achieving learning objectives. Lack of time in the school activitiy is one of the reasons for lack of optimal learning in the school, especially in the learning Arabic which is considered a difficult foreign language for students. This research aims to explain the type of Arabic language extracurricular activities at MTsN 2 Kediri, the implementation, the evaluation of learning, and the obstacles encountered during the implementation. This research used a qualitative approach with interview, observation, and documentation. The results of this research indicate that the type of Intensive Arabic Program activities at MTsN 2 Kediri is the fostering of Arabic language achievement which focuses on speaking skills. The implementation of it’s activities at MTsN 2 every day and every years. Evaluation of learning by giving post-test, quizz, midterm, final examination, and on going activities. In its implementation the researcher found some obstacles, including activities that are less interesting. Keywords: Intensive Program, Arabic Language, Evaluation.

Abstract Linguocultural approach is the new teaching direction in teaching Russian as a foreign language (RFL). Based on this approach, students are aimed to form a linguocultural competence. Studying scientific research show that there is a lot of linguistic units that are suitable to help students in forming their linguocultural competence. The purpose of the research is to apply the topic “Russian culinaronyms” (known as the name of Russian food) in the formation of the linguocultural competence of Vietnamese students who are learning Russian as a foreign language. The research was conducted by surveying and interviewing 26 Russian teachers in Vietnam by verifying the applicability of theory and practice of the topic “Russian culinaronyms”. The research results show that the teachers think that the application of this food topic in the formation of their linguocultural competence is appropriate with high survey results. Furthermore, it reveals the linguistic and cultural dimensions from Russian culinaronyms which can be used to form a linguocultural competence for Vietnamese students. The topic “Russian culinaronyms” can be applied in extracurricular sessions for language specialized students.

The objective is hereby study is to compare the effects of conventional and audiovisual methods on learning efficiency and success of retention with regard to vocabulary teaching in foreign language. Research sample consists of 21 undergraduate and 7 graduate students studying at Department of French Language Teaching, Kazim Karabekir Faculty of Education, Ataturk University. The methodology applied herein is experimental research. Two groups of 14 were randomly established, one as experimental and one as control group. Experimental group underwent audiovisual method, while conventional vocabulary teaching method, still applied in schools, was applied on the control group. The data was gathered from instructive videos equipped with pedagogical references on the website of TV5 monde, under the title “Enseigner le francais avec Tv 5 Monde” [Learn French with TV5 Monde]. Two practices, namely, “2001-2011: faut-il encore avoir peur du terrorisme” [2001-2011: Should we still fear terrorism?], “guerres et conflits: vers une privatisation générale?” [Wars & conflicts: Towards an overall privatisation?], both at C1 education level, have been selected. Success rates in research data were found out by means of percentage calculations. The resulting values are analysed and interpreted through descriptive and content analysis methodology. According to research outputs, the learners are more successful in efficiency of learning and retention via audiovisual method than through conventional method. Simultaneous action of multiple sense organs and high motivation during learning process are considered as the principal reasons for such success.

Internationally recognized experts in second language research were asked to provide anecdotes documenting memorable incidents where something had gone awry in their research. The anecdotes proved to emphasize problems of a technical, conceptual, or political nature. Fifteen anecdotes representing these three kinds of problems are presented. In common, the anecdotes express concerns for scientific realism, that is, second language research was said to go wrong in cases where legitimate claims for knowledge were undermined - by accidents, unforeseen intrusions, or misconceptions. This view of constraints on second language research, based on researchers' experiences (rather than theoretical polemics or methodological prescriptions), may be valuable for learning researchers, users of research results, and critical analyses of second language research processes.
