Hannah Arendt’s claim that thinking is the last defense against the moral outrages of criminal political regimes sets the problematic of good and evil in relief. Human freedom, Paul Ricœur reminds us, is responsible for evil. The avowal of the evil of violence is thus the condition of our consciousness of the freedom to act anew.Aesthetic experience’s lateral transposition onto the planes of ethics and politics highlights our capacity to respond to exigencies in apposite ways. Exemplary representations of the good, the right, and the justexpress a desire for being. Eros is accordingly the law of every work, word, deed, or act that answers to a difficulty, challenge, or crisis. Bound to living experiences, thought attains its true height through interrogating, demystifying, and vacating frozen norms, standards, and mores. Judgment actualizes thought’s liberating effects in answer to the demands of the situations in which we find ourselves.

In his The Symbolism of Evil Ricœur explores the dynamics of human consciousness of evil in different cultures and times. Consciousness of evil is examined by looking at the different prevailing symbols wherein human beings confess their experience with evil. Although appeared in 1960, this study is still cited in recent publications in psychology, cultural anthropology and religion. In this article I describe the context of The Symbolism of Evil as the last part of Ricœur’s study of the will and give a summary of its relevant content.

This article deals with different manifestations of violence, including the distortions and mistakes that maternal or other kind of love can produce on the object of its affections. In order to reflect about this theme, we focus on some ancients sources, such as Plutarch’s Of the affection towards offspring, mythological narratives and excerpts of Greek tragedies. To understand some aspects of the dynamics of good and evil, we recur to the thought of the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur.

Islam as the religion of raḥmah li al-‘âlamin has the dimension of law-setting based on the conditions of time and place of law will be determined. The law that Rasulullah set in a ḥadîth is inseparable from geographical, sociological, and historical conditions lied behind it. The dynamics of interpretation science help the reinterpretation of a ḥadith to produce a law that is actual and in accordance with the conditions but not out of the rules of Qur’an, because Qur’an indeed is as the main legal source in Islam. This paper is to describe the interpretation of the ḥadîth about the corpse being tortured by the tears of his family (Muslim 1536) with Paul Ricoeur's interpretation approach. Author comes to the conclution that the use of the word bukâ’ in the matan of ḥadîth means corpse actually got tortured because of the hysterical cry of his family who bemoaned over it. As for the historical aspects of this ḥadîth when Rasulullah saw the Jews weep for his family who died with hysterical cry. Thus, the point of emphasis of the ḥadîth is a way of responding those who grieve. If the attitude is excessive until hysterical wailing for days, then it includes an inappropriate attitude that is not even recommended in the Qur'an.

This publication discusses the thought of ushul fiqh Mu’tazilah in the book of Raudhot an-Nadzir wa Jannat al-Manadzir written by Ibnu Qudamah. The book is the summary of Al Mustashfa written by Imam Al Ghozali. Al Mustasfha contains diction which is not easily understood. It relates with the method used by Imam Al Ghazali namely method of Al-Mutakallimin. Therefore, book of Raudhot an-Nadzir wa Jannat al-Manadzir discusses the thought of ushul fiqh Mu’tazilah. The method of the research was qualitative method. It can be identified that Ibnu Qudamah adopts the thought of Al Ghozali without putting down his name in his book. In this book, Ibnu Qudamah sometimes has the same and different opinion with Al Ghozali. However, they also have same thought with different sampling cases. The thought of ushul fiqh Mu’tazilah influences the method of contemporary ushul fiqh. One of the influences is a human freedom to do ijtihad with the right to create their own fate. There is also a difference between old and new Mu’tazilah. In the old perspective, the law consideration is about God (theocentric). Meanwhile, in the new perspective, the law consideration is about human (anthropocentric)

The multiplicity of demands and claims in ultra-pluralistic societies complicates the search for justice. Furthermore, the normative force of competing ideals gives rise to an aporia at the heart of the idea of justice’s federating force. In this article, I argue that exemplary moral and political acts evince these ideals by reason of their fittingness with respect to the demands of the situations to which they respond. As such, these acts lay claim to their normative value by exemplifying the “rule” that each act summons. Drawing upon aesthetic experience’s lateral transposition onto the planes of ethics and politics, I show how imagination is operative in practical judgments (phronesis). Accordingly, I relate the search for justice to an eschatology of non-violence, which for Paul Ricœur takes the place of the critique of ideology in its opposition to an ontology of lingual understanding.
