A comparison was made of two sociometric measures of personality integration. Contrary to prediction, the more brief, 6-item PIRT scale was significantly more reliable ( r11 = .84) than the lengthier 30-item ESD scale ( r11 = .74). Also contrary to prediction, neither test was more highly correlated than the other (and therefore more valid) with any of 8 construct-validity measures. It was concluded that the PIRT was the more functional measure and therefore recommended for use in future personality integration research. Earlier results concerning the relationship of personality integration to self-concept and environmental contact, as well as locus of control and locus of evaluation in college-age females, were replicated.

Kajian ini bertujuan melihat sejauhmana gaya kepimpinan ibu bapa menjadi moderator kepada hubungan antara konsep kendiri dengan pencapaian akademik remaja. Untuk mencapai objektif kajian ini, seramai 687 orang remaja yang belajar di tingkatan empat dan lima dari beberapa sekolah menengah kebangsaan di Johor Bahru dipilih sebagai subjek kajian. Instrumen Tennessee Self–Concept Scale yang dibina oleh Fitts dan Indeks Topologi Amalan Didikan oleh Baumrind digunakan untuk tujuan pengumpulan data. Data pencapaian akademik diambil dari peperiksaan akhir. Data yang telah terkumpul dianalisis menggunakan statistik deskriptif kecenderungan memusat untuk menganalisis latar belakang subjek kajian. Analisis kesan pemboleh ubah moderator ke atas hubungan pemboleh ubah bebas dengan pemboleh ubah terikat telah dilakukan menggunakan statistik infrensi regresi pelbagai. Keputusan kajian yang diperolehi menunjukkan gaya kepimpinan authoritarian dan autoritatif ibu bapa didapati hanya bertindak sebagai pengamal secara signifikan kepada hubungan antara konsep kendiri dan pencapaian akademik golongan remaja. Hubungan antara konsep kendiri dengan pencapaian akademik golongan remaja didapati bersyarat kepada gaya kepimpinan permisif ibu bapa. Kata kunci: Konsep kendiri, gaya kepimpinan ibu bapa, pencapaian akademik The objective of this study is to see parents’ leadership style as a moderator for adolescents’ self–concept and academic achievement realtionship. 687 adolescents who are studying in form four and form five from secondary schools in Johor Bahru have been choosen as research subjects. Fitt’s Tennessee Self–Concept Scale and Baumrind Parenting Topology Index were used as research instruments. Academic achievement data had been taken from their final examination results. Descriptive statistic had been used for analysing the research subject demographic’s data. The effects of moderator variable on the relationship of independent and dependent variables are analysed by multivariate regression. The result shows the parents’ authoritarian and autoritative leadership styles as a predictor for adolescent self–concept and academic achievement relationship. Whereas, the relationship of adolescents’ self–concept and academic achievement is conditional to parents’ permissive style leadership. The study aimed at examining the relationships among family environment, depression and self-concept of adolescents in Hong Kong. A multi-domain perspective was adopted. The study involved a total of 2706 adolescents. Subjects were group administered a questionnaire containing the multi-domain Family Environment Scale (Moos & Moos, 1981), the multi dimensional depression scale – Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale (Reynolds, 1987) and the Multi-domain Multi-Perspective Self-Concept Inventory (Cheung & Lau, 1996). Results showed that all the three domains of family environment (relationship, personal growth, and system maintenance) correlated significantly with the three depression aspects (emotionality, lack of positive experience, and physiological irritation). The relationship domain of FES appeared to correlate more strongly than the other two domains with the depression aspects. The FES domains also correlated strongly and positively with the four domains of self-concept: academic, appearance, social, and general. Both the relationship domain and system maintenance domain correlated more strongly than the personal growth domain with the self-concept domains. Regression analyses showed that family relationship was most predictive of various aspects of depression and self-concept. Sex difference was found in the prediction of both boys' and girls' depression and self-concept. With boys, system maintenance was predictive only of self-concept. With girls, personal growth was predictive of depression, and personal growth and system maintenance were predictive of self-concept. Analysis of variance showed that students high on family relationship, personal growth, and system maintenance were low in different depression aspects, but high in various self-concept domains. It was concluded that a cohesive, orderly, and achieving family environment is conducive to more positive development in adolescents, in terms of lower depression and higher self-concept.
