This paper seeks to provide an overview of conflict mineral trade by analyzing it through an economic lens. Using data gathered from news sources, the memo first defines the term “conflict minerals” and identifies that the primary actors involved in the conflict mineral market are rebel militia groups and multinational corporations. The trade is mutually beneficial for these actors as it serves as the primary source of revenue for militia groups and allows multinational corporations to buy minerals at low costs. The memo also highlights the struggles legitimate Congolese miners face, as they face threats from militia groups and low market prices Also identified is Section 1502 of the Dodd Frank act, legislation which forces multinational corporations to list their mineral suppliers, thereby increasing supply chain transparency. While implemented with good intentions, it is extremely unsuccessful in stifling the conflict mineral trade as it lacks substantive regulatory measures. Furthermore, the EU and US plan to implement opposing conflict mineral trade policies — the EU looks to increase supply chain transparency while the US looks to repeal Section 1502 of Dodd Frank (an action which would decrease supply chain transparency). This paper believes that coordinated and homogenous action on the part of both federal governments and IGOs is necessary in order to concretely enforce restrictions on conflict mineral trade.

DHL Supply Chain North America moves more than 20 million packages each year. DHL transportation planners perform routing and cost-deduction tasks for many business projects. We refer to the associated planning problem as the Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Regulations and Common Carriers (VRPTRCC). Unlike ordinary vehicle routing problems, which use only a single type of transportation mode, our VRPTRCC applications include make–buy decisions because some of the package deliveries are ultimately subcontracted to organizations other than DHL. Time regulation means that the problem considers not only delivery-time windows, but also layover and driving-time restrictions. Our developed Network Mode Optimization Tool (NMOT) is an ant-colony optimization (ACO)-based program that aids DHL Supply Chain transportation analysts in identifying cost savings in the ground logistic network. By using the NMOT, DHL and its customers have saved millions of dollars annually. Also, the NMOT is helping DHL to win new customers against bidding competitors and reducing estimation times from multiple weeks to hours. The results show an actual increase in profits compared with the previous process by more than 15% through a combination of new projects enabled and reduced current operational costs. The NMOT is implemented and evaluated by using data from ongoing projects.

The apparel industry houses a huge amount and variety of data. At every step of the supply chain, data is collected and stored by each supply chain actor. This data, when used intelligently, can help with solving a good deal of problems for the industry. In this regard, this article is devoted to the application of data mining on the industry’s product data, i.e., data related to a garment, such as fabric, trim, print, shape, and form. The purpose of this article is to use data mining and symmetry-based learning techniques on product data to create a classification model that consists of two subsystems: (1) for predicting the garment category and (2) for predicting the garment sub-category. Classification techniques, such as Decision Trees, Naïve Bayes, Random Forest, and Bayesian Forest were applied to the ‘Deep Fashion’ open-source database. The data contain three garment categories, 50 garment sub-categories, and 1000 garment attributes. The two subsystems were first trained individually and then integrated using soft classification. It was observed that the performance of the random forest classifier was comparatively better, with an accuracy of 86%, 73%, 82%, and 90%, respectively, for the garment category, and sub-categories of upper body garment, lower body garment, and whole-body garment.

Purpose A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) enables providers and customers to communicate without a fixed infrastructure. Databases are extended on MANETs to have easy data access and update. As the energy and mobility limitations of both servers and clients affect the availability of data in MANETs, these data are replicated. The purpose of this paper is to provide a literature review of data replication issues and classify the available strategies based on the issues they addressed. Design/methodology/approach The selected articles are reviewed based on the defined criteria. Also, the differences, the advantages and disadvantages of these techniques are described. The methods in the literature can be categorized into three groups, including cluster-based, location-based and group-based mechanisms. Findings High flexibility and data consistency are the features of cluster-based mechanisms. The location-based mechanisms are also appropriate for replica allocation, and they mostly have low network traffic and delay. Also, the group-based mechanism has high data accessibility compared to other mechanisms. Data accessibility and time have got more attention to data replication techniques. Scalability as an important parameter must be considered more in the future. The reduction of storage cost in MANETs is the main goal of data replication. Researchers have to consider the cost parameter when another parameter will be influenced. Research limitations/implications Data replication in MANETs has been covered in different available sources such as Web pages, technical reports, academic publications and editorial notes. The articles published in national journals and conferences are ignored in this study. This study includes articles from academic main international journals to get the best capability. Originality/value The paper reviews the past and the state-of-the-art mechanisms in data replication in MANET. Exclusively, data replication’s main goal, existing challenges, research terminologies and mechanisms in MANET are summarized using the answers to the research questions. This method will help researchers in the future to develop more effective data replication method in MANET.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the mediating effect of information sharing (IS) on the link between supply chain integration (SCI) practices (internal, customer and supplier) and internal process performance (IPP) by using selected agribusiness firms from an emerging economy, Ghana. Design/methodology/approach To determine the effect of IS on the nexus between SCI practices and IPP, a research framework was developed and tested using data amassed from 156 agribusiness firms for the study. The data set was assessed and hypotheses were tested using structural equation modelling. Findings The outcomes revealed that both INI and CI positively and significantly influenced IS. However, the results disclosed that SI has no significant positive effect on IS among the Ghanaian agribusiness firms. The findings of the study further discovered that IS fully mediates the relationship between INI, CI and IPP, whereas SI has a direct interaction with IPP. Originality/value This study contributes to the existing supply chain management research by empirically authenticating IS as the mediator between SCI practices and IPP. From the viewpoint of a developing economy, this paper identifies the significant connection that exists between SCI practices, IS and IPP. The outcomes recommend that IS is a core driving facilitator to reinforce the correlation between SCI practices and IPP.

The logistics of railway electrification engineering, because of its unique industrial characteristics and intrinsic characteristics, can't be directly applied to the existing departments, industries, and the management information systems of other countries at present. In this paper, the logistics system of railway electrification engineering is analyzed based on object oriented analysis and in combination with the supply chain management information system and the author thinks that the key to analyzing the logistics information management system design of railway electrification engineering lies in the expression to the railway electrification engineering transportation supply chain management logic structure, and finally a computer aided decision system (CPFR model) based on the railway electrification engineering transportation supply chain distribution is established using data mining technology and object-oriented data model.

To explore the attributes of cluster supply chain, and provide its driving model (2P&2BP) for more effective and more efficient way in implementing mass customization. The paper analyzes cluster supply chain driving model for implementing mass customization manufacturing using data from case study from 8 garment and IT industrial clusters. In process of implementing mass customization, we found that cluster supply chain has supplying level, marketing level and supplementing level to support its driving model (2P&2BP: Pull/push/burst power/bottleneck press) rather than conventional pull\push model. thus SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) in industrial cluster would have chances to extensively participate cooperate with core companies in the form of supply chain, thus expanding gradually.
