Government construction projects are vital to the economic development of developing countries. However, although most of these projects suffer from abandonment, little evidence exists concerning the causes that account for this setback. This paper investigates the causes of government construction project abandonment in Ghana. We used a sequential data collection approach, in-depth semi-structured interviews, and questionnaire surveys to solicit the views of project management practitioners, contractors, and clients associated with Ghana government construction project implementation. Using factor analysis and structural equation modelling, we find that Ghanaian government construction project abandonment is influenced by five sets of causes: political leadership, culture, external forces, resources (including funding) and administrative/institutional bottlenecks. Three of these sets of causes – political leadership, cultural and external forces, are the primary causes, while resources (including funding) and administrative/institutional causes are secondary causes.

Risks inevitably exist in all stages of a project. In a construction project, which is highly dynamic and complex, risk factors affect the expected achievement rates of the three main performance goals, namely schedule, cost, and quality. A comprehensive risk management procedure requires three crucial steps: risk confirmation, analysis, and treatment. Risk analysis is the core of risk management. Through structural equation modeling, this study developed a risk analysis model that takes a different perspective and considered the occurrence probability of risk events and the extent to which these events affect a project. The contractor dimension was discovered to exert the strongest influence on an overall project, followed by the subcontractor and design dimensions. This paper proposes a novel construction project risk analysis model, which considers the entire project. The proposed model can be used as a reference for risk managers to make decisions about project risks, so as to achieve the ultimate goal of saving resources and the sustainable operation of the construction project.

Building on the multifunctional perspective from current contract theory, we conceptualize contractual complexity as a three-dimensional construct to depict the explicitness and elaborateness of control, coordination, and adaptation provisions in a construction project contract. A 13-item scale with construction project features is developed for measuring the different aspects of contractual complexity following rigorous scale development procedures. Using the structural equation modeling technique, empirical testing results demonstrate that all of the three components contribute significantly to contractual complexity. Further analysis indicated that treating contractual complexity in the three-functional way outperforms the unidimensional one regarding power to explain satisfaction and strong-form opportunism.

Purpose Construction projects have huge impacts on the social sustainability of the neighbouring community. The purpose of this paper is to identify and understand the key factors of a construction project that contribute to the social sustainability of a neighbourhood. Design/methodology/approach Questionnaire surveys relating to two case studies of regeneration projects in Saudi Arabia were carried out to ascertain and analyse the perceptions of residents of the neighbourhood communities in which the projects were built. Findings The results derived from factor analysis suggested five significant underlying social factors: health and physical comfort, accessibility, integration, economy and participation. These are defined as the core social functions necessary for enhancing social sustainability in the neighbourhood community as a result of new construction. Originality/value Ideally, a construction project will create spaces where people can interact socially, develop a sense of community and grow and prosper. This study reveals how the neighbours of the project felt about it and what sort of input they wanted to have in the design, construction and operation of the facility. For developers emphasising sustainability, this is the essential data.

Technology use in all fields can play an important role as the booster in creating lean and efficient processes. Technology use may result in reduced duplications and delays in workflows while helping to speed up task realization. Building Information Modeling (BIM) enhances knowledge share, use and reuse for better collaboration, communication, coordination, and monitoring as a knowledge base platform. BIM enhanced construction projects may positively affect the process efficiency. The aim of this paper is to define a measurement instrument of BIM usage as technology enhancer tool and of process efficiency of construction projects. Research leans on the prominent literature to concrete the measurement instrument. A survey is established to construction project professionals to understand the technology efficiency and process efficiency in BIM enabled construction projects. The research based on the related data collected from 92 professionals experienced both in traditional project delivery methods and BIM enabled construction projects. The respondents are the construction industry experts comprised of construction project managers, BIM managers, and BIM implementation experts (architects, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers etc.). Data is analyzed and tested with structural equation modeling software to verify the proposed measurement instrument. The technology efficiency and process efficiency factors for BIM enabled construction projects are tested and refined. Research findings present the measurement instrument for both technology and process efficiency in BIM enabled construction projects.

Abstract A construction project is like a living entity and requires the interconnection and coordination of several stakeholders and many of them have their objectives, which sometimes create a conflict of interest between the teams and within the teams. The success of any project is repeatable, and a set of attributes for the success of a construction project can be identified, requiring discipline and hard work. The construction sector is the engine of growth for a nation and supplies services and goods to other industries. The objective of the study is to analyse the enabling factors affecting the performance construction projects in Architecture Engineering and Construction industry. The methodology chosen for the study is to collect primary data from the Indian construction industry using structured questionnaire surveys. The collected data are analysed using reliability and factor analyses. The findings of the study provide the value of reliability, that is, Cronbach's alpha value of (0.86) of the data collected using a questionnaire survey. Furthermore, exploratory factor analysis produced five main significant factors based on covariance between the attributes and grouped into factors such as site management and coordination, leadership and financial management, planning, commitment, and coordination having a variance of 17.65, 11.8, 9.1, 8.5, and 7.5%, respectively. To complete a construction project, it takes the cooperation and collaboration of stakeholder involved in construction projects to obtain optimum project performance. Problems that frequently occur in construction projects is the lack of cooperation, lack of trust, ineffective communication, lack of visualization of the planned buildings and different relationships between stakeholders that project performance is not optimal. To overcome these problems need to develop a model of collaboration between stakeholders in a construction project. The purpose of this research is to identify the critical success factors of the collaboration of design and build construction project team so that can understand the influence of collaboration model to collaboration performance with the geographic, professional, stakeholder, and ethnic cultural boundary spanners in design and build construction project in Indonesia. This research uses factor analysis and variable relation with Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) method. The results found that geographical and ethical boundaries are influencing collaborative performance significantly.

Every activity in a construction project is related to time and cost. Delay is considered common and often occurred in a construction project. A slight delay can be very costly. It will impact all of the related stakeholders. This paper seeks to identify the financial issues in the construction industry and the impact of the financial issues towards the projects in Malaysia. Literature reviews and questionnaire surveys were used to carry out the study. The data collected were analysed via Microsoft Excel and SPSS software. The paper reveals that the withholding of payment by the approval parties is the critical financial issues in Malaysia’s construction industry, while the main impact when the financial issues occurs is where the project is delayed/postponed/terminated. The findings of this research will give a good insight to the industry and help to improve the local players’ competitive capabilities as highlighted by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) in the Construction Transformation Programme (CITP) 2016-2020 and in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that was introduced by the United Nations (UN).

Due to competition and high expectations of customers, the construction sector is faced with several challenges while pursuing project outcomes. Generally, construction firms consist of various project teams with multipurpose, which necessitates participation and involvement of team members in an organised manner to complete the project effectively. The current research aimed to understand the essential factors that contribute to Effective Teamwork in the construction industry. The study is based on primary data via a questionnaire-based survey method. The data collected from 72 respondents comprises various construction team members like Engineers, Contractors, Owners, Architects from various parts of Tamil Nadu. The data collected were processed using the Structural Equation Model (SEM), which was employed in this research to understand the relationship among the successful outcomes and the factors determining the team's success. The analysis of the results and the model show that the integration between the project team brings about a uniquely positive effect on construction project outcomes at a R2 value of 0.733. This study provides empirical evidence that a successful construction project team will positively influence the outcome of construction projects.

The actual cost of a construction project is composed of not only production costs, but also transaction costs. The presented model includes the uncertainty of the owner’s behavior, the uncertainty of the contractor’s behavior, the uncertainty in the transaction environment and mechanism, and project management efficiency, to illustrate the influence path of the transaction costs borne by the owner. The model is tested by the structural equation modeling (SEM) using the data collected from construction project owners. The finding indicate that uncertainty in the transaction environment and mechanism appears to be the core construct of the model due to its strong linkages with transaction costs and the owner’s behavior, the contractor’s behavior, and project management efficiency. The uncertainty of the contractor’s behavior is also found to affect project management efficiency positively. A certainty behavior on the part of the owner reduces the uncertainty in the transaction environment and mechanism, increases the efficiency of project management, and reduces the transaction costs of construction project.

Purpose Previous research shows that implementing lean construction is not a straightforward task. The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of formal and informal mechanisms in implementing lean principles in construction projects. Design/methodology/approach The paper draws on a single case study of the implementation of innovative lean principles in a public construction project in Norway. The study is based on qualitative data, including 17 semi-structured interviews with 21 individuals, document analysis, and observations in meetings and seminars, in addition to informal conversations. Findings Formal mechanisms, including contractual arrangements, have the potential to both facilitate and hamper the implementation of innovative lean principles in a construction project. They might create coherence, but at the same time they might limit the scope of the concept in such a way that others do not accept it. Informal mechanisms, including social and lateral relationships and trust aid implementation, both directly by creating commitment and by modifying the challenges that the formal mechanisms potentially incur. Formal mechanisms may, in turn, nurture the informal ones. Research limitations/implications The research is based on a single case study within the Norwegian public sector, which is dependent on specific public procurement regulations and subject to strong contractual traditions. Originality/value The research extends the existing knowledge of implementation of lean construction in the construction industry. It helps refining the understanding of the role played by formal and informal mechanisms, and the interplay between them in the implementation process. This knowledge is also relevant for process innovations in construction in general.
