Objective: To assess the outcome of autologous platelet rich plasma(PRP) for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia in male patients. Methods: A total of 61 male patients from Department of Dermatology, Lahore General Hospital Lahore with ages between 18-60 years were included in the study during a period of 6 months. PRP was prepared by double spin method and CaCl2 was used to activate platelets. PRP was injected, with a 30-G needle using Nappage technique. This descriptive case series study was carefully monitored. Protocol included three treatment sessions with an interval of four weeks. Number of hairs, and hair strength was assessed by dermoscopy and hair pull test. SPSS Version-21 was used for data entry and analysis. Results: The mean age of patients was 42.67±8.63 years. Mean number of hair was 21.50±4.57 per dermatoscopic field, Post treatment number of hair was 78.10±16.24. Mean duration of disease was 10.25±3.52 months. Majority of patients were in stage iv 19(31.1%) and in stage ii 16(26.2%). There was significant difference in number of hair before and after treatment. Conclusion: PRP is an effective method to treat the patients with androgen alopecia. Key Words: Autologus platelet rich plasma, Androgen alopecia. Abstract Introduction. Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease-causing non-scarring alopecia. It is usually treated with immunosuppressive agents, to which some patients fail to respond adequately. Material and Methods. Three patients with AA refractory to standard therapy were treated with intra-dermal injection of autologous platelet rich plasma (PRP) every four weeks. Results. All three patients showed remarkable improvement after multiple sessions of PRP treatment. Conclusion. Autologous PRP is safe and effective in treatment-resistant forms of AA demonstrated in many case reports; therefore it deserves further study with randomized, placebo-controlled trials.

The aim: The work was aimed to study the histological, morphometric and planimetric features of skin regeneration in mature rats with chronic hyperglycemia under the influence of platelet-rich plasma. Materials and methods: 60 mature white laboratory rats were used. The animals were divided into three groups (I – control with mechanical skin injuries; II – rats with chronic hyperglycemia and modeled mechanical skin injuries; III – animals with the chronic hyperglycemia and modeled mechanical skin injuries which were injected with the platelet-rich plasma). The samples were studied using light microscopy.Statistical data processing was performed using SPSS-17. Results: On the 21st day, the epithelialization of control mature rats wound was almost complete. The epithelium contained all layers without pathological changes. The new dermis has been reorganized into papillary and reticular layers. On the 21st day, the wound of rats with chronic hyperglycemia was not completely covered with the epidermis. The connective tissue of the dermis was disorganized. On the 21st day, the wound epithelialization was also more complete in mature rats with chronic hyperglycemia received platelet-rich plasma compared to the rats with chronic hyperglycemia. The dermis contained a large number of blood vessels with normal, full-blooded lumens. Conclusions: The chronic hyperglycemia leads to disruption of epithelialization processes, angiogenesis, a delay in the reorganization of dermis connective tissue, and vascular remodeling. The injections of autologous platelet-rich plasma promote faster angiogenesis, reduce inflammation, and accelerate wound epithelialization.

Background: Chronic ulcers are a big health problem worldwide. Having a great impact at personal, social and professional levels. The use of autologous Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a major advance in the treatment of these ulcers as an easy and cost-effective method. Platelets provide numerous growth factors enhancing tissue healing. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of autologous platelet-rich plasma as a treatment of chronic non-healing ulcers. Methods: Autologous PRP was prepared from whole blood by centrifugation and activated by 10% calcium chloride. Twenty-Four (24) patients with non-healing ulcers of different etiologies, whom they met our inclusion criteria, were treated with PRP injected every two weeks locally into their wounds until healing. The ulcer dimensions were measured every week. The follow-up period was 12 weeks after healing. Results: The mean age of the study population 41±21 years. Complete healing was achieved in all patients. The mean rate of healing (average decrease in ulcer dimensions) was 0.48 cm/week. The rate of healing was greater at the week following injection. The mean time for healing was 6.11 weeks. Conclusions: Author witnessed the useful effects of PRP application on enhancing wound healing. The results from our case series showed that PRP is a safe and effective treatment for the promotion of healing chronic ulcers. Further research and controlled, randomized prospective clinical trials on larger patient population are important to validate our results.

Background: Diabetes is a chronic debilitating disease. A large percentage of Pakistani population suffers from this disease and its consequences. Awareness regarding the disease and its management is poor. Aim: To evaluate the awareness of diabetic patients presenting at Services Hospital regarding diabetes. Study design: Observational cross-sectional case-series study. Settings & duration: Department of medicine Services hospital, Lahore, from 01-07-2020 to 31-12- 2020. Methodology: We interviewed 100 diabetic patients who presented to the OPD/ER of the hospital. All the participants were selected randomly. A simple questionnaire was used to record the demographic details of the patients as well as their response to a series of 13 questions. The knowledge of the participants was taken to be good if they were able to answer at least 8 or more of the questions correctly. Results: Overall, a total of 100 adults were interviewed. The median age of the study population was 52.06 years with standard deviation of 13.49 years. There were 46 females and 54 males. Only 30% of the patients had sufficient knowledge regarding the disease and its complications. When stratification was done there was no significant association with any variable. Conclusion: There is a lack of knowledge among the diabetes regarding their disease. Even education from doctors is not helpful in this regard. Once patients are aware of the disease and its complications the glycemic control improves markedly. Keywords: Diabetes Mellitus, Poor Control, Patient Knowledge
