<p>The local structure and geometry of catalytic interfaces can influence the selectivity of chemical reactions. Here, using a pre-strained polymer, we uniaxially compress a thin gold film to form a nano-folded catalyst. We observe two kinds of folds and can tune the ratio of loose to tight folds by varying the extent of pre-strain in the polymer. We characterize the nano-folded catalysts using x-ray diffraction, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy. We observe grain reorientation and coarsening in the nano-folded gold catalysts. Electroreduction of carbon dioxide with these nano-folded catalysts reveals an enhancement of Faradaic efficiency for carbon monoxide formation by a factor of about four. This result suggests that electrolyte mass transport limitations and an increase of the local pH in the tight folds of the catalyst outweigh the effects of alterations in grain characteristics. Together, our studies demonstrate that nano-folded geometries can significantly alter grain characteristics, mass transport, and catalytic selectivity. </p>

IUE has been used to study 11 high luminosity X-ray binaries, of which 3 are in the Magellanic Clouds. In the supergiant systems, X-ray ionisation bubbles have been found in most cases, leading to a greater understanding of the winds and accretion processes. Further studies of precessing objects such as LMC X-4 with IUE and ST are clearly of considerable interest, relating to X-ray heating and blanketing. Detailed studies of the Cyg X-l ionisation bubble may resolve the long standing puzzle of its orbit inclination and masses. UV continua have furnished valuable information on extinction, temperatures and luminosities, and the presence of non-stellar (i.e. disk) luminosity. Here too, more detailed studies are clearly indicated for the future. A unique object of interest is the LMC transient 0538-66 whose UV spectrum has quasarlike lines and luminosity which varies oppositely to the visible. This may be a case of supercritical accretion generating an optically thick shell (“disk”) about the pulsar.

This obituary highlights the careers and contributions of two eminent plant physiologists. Emeritus Professor Reinhard Van Steveninck (1928–2017) was educated at Wageningen and London University. He joined the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), New Zealand, and achieved early recognition for his publications on abscission and mechanisms of salt uptake of plants. He was appointed Professor of Agriculture (Plant/Soil Science) at La Trobe University in 1976. He expanded his research into salinity tolerance of lupins and the ultrastructural localisation of ions using X-ray microprobe analysis. He was a good teacher and nurtured and trained many researchers in this area. He was a recognised expert in using a combination of ultrastructural techniques to study the movement of ions within plant cells and across tissues. His publications include book chapters on plant physiology, as well as a major review on the ‘washing’ or ‘ageing’ phenomenon in plant tissues. He was an active member and President of the Australian Society of Plant Physiologists. Margaret Van Steveninck (1931–2017) worked as a Research Assistant at Adelaide University and subsequently as a Demonstrator and Senior Demonstrator in Botany at Queensland and La Trobe University. Her plant physiology research with her husband resulted in numerous joint publications including a chapter on microanalysis in ‘Electron microscopy of plant cells’.
