ABSTRACT. Utilizing marine meteorological data the values of 1 latent heat flux, sea surface temperature (SST) and sea minus air temperature have been computed on a grid mesh of 5° over the Bay of Bengal during September month of the contrasting Winter monsoon years 1987 and 1988. It has been found that the good winter monsoon of 1987 followed (I) higher SSTs over western Bay of Bengal; (ii) very high evaporation rate over the sea area bounded by 10°.20°N. 80°.90oE and (iii) instability in the surface layer over north and adjoining central Bay of Bengal, whereas, the bad winter monsoon of 1988 followed (i) lower SSTs over western Bay of Bengal; (ii) very low evaporation rate over the area I0°.20oN, 80°.90oE and (iii) stability in the surface layer over north and adjoining central Bay of Bengal.

Utilising thirty one years' marine meteorological data from 1961-91 recorded over the north Indian Ocean the sea surface temperature (SST) and evaporation have been obtained for different regions of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. The moving pentad averages of SST and evaporation reveal increasing tendencies of both the parameters over the Arabian Sea and that of evaporation over the Bay of Bengal during May. The changes are real and significant as revealed by the trend analysis. The spectral analysis shows that SST has a 2-3 year significant cycle and evaporation rate has a 2-5 year cycle over the Indian Seas. In addition, a significant 15-year cycle is present in the SST over the Bay of Bengal and evaporation rate over the Arabian Sea. Empirical orthogonal function analysis performed on the anomalies of SST and evaporation rate over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal reveals that the time coefficient of first EOF has an increasing tendency.

Sivash bay is the shallow-water lagoon of the Azov Sea. Restricted water exchange and high evaporation form Sivash as the basin with very high salinity. This factor leads to different from the Azov Sea thermal and ice regimes of Sivash. Maine aim of the study presented to investigate recent state and changes of the characteristics and processes in the basin using satellite data. Landsat scanners TM, ETM+, OLI, TIRS together with MODIS and AVHRR were used. Additionally NOMADS NOAA and MERRA meteorological data were analyzed. The next topics are discussed in the work: 1. Changes of the sea surface temperature, ice regime and relation with salinity. 2. Coastal line transformation – long term and seasonal, wind impact. 3. Manifestation of the Azov waters intrusions through the Arabat spit, preferable wind conditions.
