This study aims to gain a deeper understanding of the existence of the local social organization in conducting community empowerment. The experiment was conducted at Community Empowerment Institution (In Indonesia it is referred to as Lembaga Pemberdayaan Masyarakat/LPM). LPM Cibeunying as one of the local social institution in Bandung regency. Aspects reviewed in the study include the style of leadership, processes, and stages of community empowerment, as well as the LPM network. The research method used is a case study with the descriptive method and qualitative approach. Data collection was conducted against five informants consisting of the Chairman and LPM’s Board members, village officials, and community leaders. The results show that the dominant leadership style is participative, in addition to that, a supportive leadership style and directive leadership style are also used in certain situations. The empowerment process carried out per the stages of the empowerment process is identifying and assessing the potential of the region, problems, and opportunities-chances; arranging a participative activity plan; implementing the activity plan; and monitoring and evaluating the process and results of activities. The social networking of LPM leads to a social network of power in which LPM can influence the behavior of communities and community institutions in utilizing and managing community empowerment programs. From the research, it can be concluded that the model of community empowerment implemented by LPM Cibeunying Village is enabling, empowering, and protecting.

The internal liability of managers of large associations is becoming increasingly relevant in the context of their growing economic importance, especially considering the stricter compliance obligations. The book develops de lege lata with the help of corporate principles a liability regime for board members and association managers with and without corporate board positions that is in line with common interests. At the same time, the author uses a practical analysis of various association structures to indicate the problems that exist in the realization of liability and recommends de lege ferenda for a mandatory supervisory board for large associations based on the model of stock corporation law. The work addresses equally academics and legal practice as well as the associations themselves.

This study explored how and when female board members make effective contribution to board processes in a sub-Saharan African country (Ghana), a context characterized by low female representation on corporate boards, but highly under-researched with respect to the gender and corporate governance literature. The study is based on interview data from 25 female board directors in Ghana. The results show that women on corporate boards contribute to effective board processes and outcomes when their proposed ideas during board meetings are accepted by other board members, implemented by management and impact positively on organizational outcomes such as enhanced financial, product and staff outcomes. These effective contributions of female board directors to corporate board processes can further be enhanced by suitable female directors’ personal-level conditions such as their human capital (advanced degree and professional qualification, and past board membership experience) and family support (supportive husbands, and having grown up children), as well as board-level conditions like occupying chairperson/leadership position on the board or committees, and regular attendance at board meetings. Consequently, this research study contributed to the gender and corporate governance literature by providing new evidence from under-researched geographical context on how women on corporate boards contribute to effective board processes. It further highlights personal and board-level conditions that are necessary for greater contributions of female directors to corporate board processes and outcomes in male-dominated societies and boards.

The presence of appropriate gender diversity, board size and board composition does not only promote favourable organizational ambience but also offers meaningful upsurge in the financial position of an organization relatively. It is on this premise that prompted the essence to examine the relationship between corporate board diversity and financial performance of insurance companies in Nigeria for the period 2014 to 2018. Secondary data from Cornerstone Insurance Plc. and Lasaco Assurance Plc. were employed in the study. Using the Panel least Square regression technique, the results reveal that gender diversity, board size and board composition exert insignificant influence on profit before tax as the measure of financial performance. However, while gender diversity exerts negative influence, board size and board composition exert positive influences on profit before tax of insurance companies. The study concludes that employment of appropriate number of directors and also in suitable composition as board members have positive effect on the financial performance of insurance firms. Therefore, the study recommended among others, that: appropriate ratio of executive to independent non-executive directors should be maintained among board members for better decision-making at the interest of all stakeholders. Also, the ratio of gender diversity (female to male directors) should be increased as the role of women in resource management cannot be relegated to the background especially in financial performance of insurance companies.

Purpose This paper aims to advance the professional knowledge, experience and expertise of anti-money laundering (AML) professionals by focusing on how money laundering (ML) impacts a variety of financial institutions (FIs) and in what ways the FIs can retaliate to detect, prevent and mitigate the risk of ML. Design/methodology/approach This paper use data from secondary sources. Many FI cases have been included such as a bank money service business (MSB) and insurance companies. Findings There should be a culture of compliance in organizations. Upper management, such as a designated committee or board members, should set the tone of compliance. Money launderers take advantage of every possible opportunity to convert illicit proceeds into clean proceeds with any institution or profession. Originality/value This paper used a case study approach to study the nuances of money laundering activities in various jurisdictions.

This case study examines how uplifting leadership by the superintendent of one rural school district utilized various structures and processes to successfully implement the first year of their district strategic plan. The study is framed around the literature on change theory and the literature on uplifting leadership. Interviews with goal area team leaders, building principals, district leadership, and school board members yielded various leadership characteristics, structures, and processes that resulted in successful implementation of year one of the district's strategic plan. The interdependence of uplifting leadership with supportive structures and processes were examined as pivotal to the district's successful implementation.

This qualitative case study examines how board members make sense of federal accountability policies and how their sensemaking shapes their use of assessment data as a policy instrument. Deviating from previous work on practitioner sensemaking, the participants’ interpretations of assessments did not align with their ensuing use of the data. Furthermore, board members’ use of assessment data diverged from both federal and state messaging, illustrating board members’ synthesis and adaptation of external messaging into a locally driven narrative. As the nation has shifted to state accountability systems under Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the findings provide insights to policymakers and practitioners to support local implementation.

Criminal justice agencies often call for partnerships with the community. In restorative and community justice initiatives, citizen volunteers often serve as decision makers in nonadversarial sanctioning. Although prior research has reported the attitudes of other participants in restorative decision making, such as victims and offenders, none have examined those of community volunteers. We report on findings from a state-wide survey of volunteers serving on Vermont Reparative Probation Boards. In this program, board members meet with probationers to negotiate a “reparative contract” that may include apologies, restitution, community service, and other tasks. We found a board membership that is generally representative of the community, highly supportive of the program, and knowledgeable of restorative justice principles.

Our study examines the role of board control tasks in mitigating self-control problems in controlling owner family businesses. We challenge the common perception that controlling owners do not require and use board control because of the concentration of ownership and management in a single individual. We argue that self-control problems, that is agency problems with oneself, have often been overlooked by existing studies on the relevance of control tasks. By using a multiple case study design, we demonstrate that controlling owners frequently use board control as a self-governing mechanism and develop several propositions on favorable board processes and compositions. Rather than independence, we propose that controlling owners should select their board members based on trust and expertise. Moreover, we propose that probing and challenging behavior by board members in combination with the controlling owner’s willingness to prepare in a formalized manner support the reduction of self-control problems.

Discourse on diversity typically regards psychology as a well-balanced discipline in gender. But treating psychology as a singular entity may disguise important differences across subdisciplines and geographical locations. Further, little is known about how gender diversity may be related to other forms of diversity, particularly geographical (national) diversity—representations from different regions. As a case study, we focused on gender disparity in journal editorships—positions of central power in the landscape of scholarship. Combining gender and geographical diversity analysis, we analyzed 68 top psychology journals from ten subdisciplines. In contrast to previous results based on a specific segment of psychology journals, we found that females are overall underrepresented both as editorial board members (EBMs; 41%) and as editors-in-chief (EiCs; 34%). Importantly, gender disparity in editorships varies substantially across journals, subdisciplines, genres of scholarship (empirical, review, and method), continents, and countries/regions. With a few exceptions that reach gender parity (e.g., EBMs in developmental psychology; EBMs in Canada and Hong Kong), the majority of subdisciplines and regions witness varying degrees of female under-representations. Of note, under female (vs. male) EiCs, women are much better represented as EBMs (47% vs. 36%), and become the majority in subdisciplines such as developmental and multidisciplinary psychology. But this gender effect is not general, as the geographical diversity of EBMs and authorships decreases under female (vs. male) EiCs. Together, these results not only reveal the overall gender diversity in editorships in psychology, but also characterize its local and broad contexts, with new implications for policies.
