Seabather's eruption (SBE) is an intensely itchy, papule-erythematous dermatitis that occurs predominantly in regions of the body covered by bathing costumes, after exposure to marine water. The planulae larvae of Linuche unguiculata scyphomedusae (thimble jellyfish) are the etiologic agent of the dermatitis, which is frequent in waters of Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and Florida. The authors report 38 cases of SBE in the State of Santa Catarina (Southern region of Brazil), with emphasis on their clinical and epidemiological aspects, such as profile of victim, topography of the papules and conditions predisposing to the accident.

The objetive of the research was to verify the incidence of the ocular form of cysticercosis among the patients who consulted professionals of the field, during the first statistic inventory accomplished in the State of Paraná, Brazil. The 1996 research was performed through a questionnaire sent to all 220 members of Paraná Ophthalmology Association and to the 17 members of Pathology and Cytology Department of the Paraná Medical Association. A pre-stamped envelop for the return of the answers was included in the package. We received 99 answers from ophthalmologists and 10 answers from pathologists. Retrospective and epidemiological research about the incidences of the ocular cysticercosis in the State of Paraná, added to national related published reports, rendered 95 cases probably adquired in Paraná, 71 of the cases were referred in this research and 24 in prior publication. The most frequent localization was vitreous and subretinal, as literature had already pointed out.

Background. In recent years, Dengue has been emerging as a global health problem with approximately 2.5 billion people being affected by it .In the last 50 years, the incidence of dengue infection has increased 30-fold, and the World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that 96 million cases of dengue occur annually. The epidemiology of dengue fever (DF) is complex in the Indian subcontinent as all the four serotypes are circulating. And there is no systematic epidemiological study done on dengue cases in Manipur, a north-eastern state of India. This study is therefore done to report observations on dengue cases from a virus diagnostic and research laboratory of Manipur to present an epidemiological scenario of the state for the last three years. Method. We used the dengue data extracted from the laboratory register of Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) from 2016 to 2018. All suspected outpatient and inpatients dengue cases from public and private health services are included in the VRDL database whose informed consent were obtained. We evaluated the overall features of the data for generating seasonal pattern, geographical pattern, gender wise distribution, age wise distribution and seroprevelance pattern of dengue cases for the study period from 2016 to 2018. Results. A total of 1689 cases of suspected patients of dengue virus infection were tested for dengue ELISA test and 272(16.10%) samples were found to be seropositive. The month wise distribution of dengue cases is quite an interesting as the three years of study shows variant pattern in observation. In all the three years dengue seropositive cases were seen higher in male population. But there is no significant value to the positivity of dengue seropositive towards male than female (The chi-square statistic is 2.1314.The p-value is .344481. The result is not significant at p < .05.). Conclusion. Our study presents a comparative epidemiological study on seroprevelance of dengue in the state of Manipur from the year 2016 to 2018. The findings in the present study extend the knowledge of the geographical distribution and seroprevelance of dengue in the state of Manipur for the last three years. This is an attempt to present epidemiological dengue seroprevelance in the state of Manipur which in future would be a reference from public health concerns for taking up necessary action plan to curtail the spread of dengue.

ObjectivesTo record the activation and use of the Eastern Sovereign Base Area (ESBA) emergency ambulance service of British Forces Cyprus between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2016. To reflect on these findings in light of data from 1995 to 1998 to identify current treads and areas of development.MethodRetrospective epidemiological study of all activations of the ESBA emergency ambulance service within the study period.Results812 patients were treated over 3 years, an 80% increase in workload, of which 41% were entitled personnel. Forty-two per cent of activations were for medical complaints compared with 41% for trauma. The number of deaths remained static (n=15). Road traffic incidents (RTI) remain the top activation by type, but accounting for a smaller proportion of workload. RTI mortality has declined by 50%.ConclusionThe ESBA emergency ambulance service responded to double the activations, when compared with 18 years ago, with a significant shift to medical cases over trauma. This ESBA emergency ambulance provides a varied and vital service for the local community that also benefits Defence Medical Services personnel interested in the Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine environment in order to maintain clinical skills and currency for the benefit of future deployments, both humanitarian and kinetic in nature.

A leptospirosis clinical-epidemiological study was made in humans and reservoirs in the state of Yucatán, México. Interviews and serological analyses were made on 400 persons from an open population, 439 probable cases of leptospirosis and 1060 animal reservoirs (cows, pigs, dogs, rats and opossums). IgM Leptospira DipstickTM and Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) was used to detect human antibodies to leptospiras and serovar respectively. Leptospirosis incidence in humans was 2.2/100,000 inhab. in 1998, 0.7/100,000 in 1999 and 0.9/100,000 in 2000. Overall seroprevalence was 14.2%, relatively unchanged from seroprevalences observed 20 years ago. Highest seropositivity was found in people over 56 years of age, predominating males over females. Predominant serovars in the open population were tarassovi, hardjo, pomona and panama. Leptospirosis cases were most frequent in rural areas, and the anicteric course predominated over the icteric. The panama, icterohaemorrhagiae and pomona serovars predominated in both anicteric and icteric courses. Dogs, pigs and rodents had the highest seropositivity among the reservoirs. Contact with rodents and natural water sources were significant factors (p £ 0.05). Human cases (74%) occurred during the rainy season. It is concluded that leptospirosis is still a serious illness with important clinical and epidemiological implications in the state of Yucatán, Mexico.

The non-syndromic cleft palate (NSCP) is a common congenital defect in humans. This work has aimed to perform a descriptive epidemiological study of patients with NSCP in the State of Bahia, Brazil. A questionnaire was applied to patients and/or parents at three reference centres for treatment of craniofacial anomalies. Of the 135 patients with NSCP, 60% were female and 40% male. Blacks and mulattos were predominant. The most common systemic disorder was otologic findings. The average age of the surgery was 5 years and 2 months with a percentage of 74.8% operated. With regard to the mothers, 16.3 % consumed alcoholic beverages and 12.6 % smoked. The most cited vitamin supplementation was folic acid. Contact with chemicals involved 20.7 % of the fathers and 14.9 % of the mothers. The most frequent mother’s age gestational ranged between 15 and 25 years old. The results showed that the frequency of children with NSCP in the State of Bahia is related to the location of the reference centres. Younger mothers gave birth to cleft palate children even despite using vitamin supplementation. Although no surgical procedure has been performed at an ideal age, the majority of the children with cleft palate were submitted to surgical repair.
