The aim of the study which included 2311 patients (aged 18—80 yrs), examined by 100 physicians (57% allergists, 37% pulmonologists and 7% general practitioner) in 18 Russian cities, was to assess the prevalence of allergic rhinitis in patients with asthma, as well as to evaluate the specifics of the course of these diseases, when concomitant or not. The study design included one outpatient visit, followed by the completion of studyspecific case report forms and Asthma Control Questionnaire (ACQ) validated for use in Russia. The vast majority (88%)of asthma patients had concomitant allergic rhinitis (Group 1). Patients with asthma only (Group 2) were older (50,6±0,78 vs 41,9±0,35 yr, p

Oral combination preparations (antihistamine + sympathomimetic) are widely used for nasal and sinus congestion without the presence of allergy. The use of antihistamine in these cases may be questioned. Evaluation of the clinical effect of only a sympathomimetic agent on patients with non-allergic rhinitis is performed in a double-blind clinical study on seventy patients. Phenylpropanolamine (50 mg and 100 mg) was compared with placebo. It was found that 100 mg phenylpropanolamine was significantly more active than 50 mg or placebo administered orally as a sustained-release tablet twice daily. No side-effects such as CNS stimulation and influence on blood pressure were seen at any of the dose levels.

Recent studies show that perennial allergic rhinitis is prevalent among older people, but the management of this disease is underestimated and not determined. This article describes the persistent allergic rhinitis in patients of the older age group and identifies the primary goals of treatment based on the age-related physiological factors, concomitant conditions and the use of other drugs. Special attention is paid to the various options for the drug therapy in elderly patients over the age of 60 years. The second-generation antihistamines and intranasal glucocorticosteroids also have primacy over other drugs, when supervising older patients. A randomized open multicenter clinical study showed that Momate Rhino Advance (a combination of intranasal antihistamines (azelastine) and intranasal glucocorticosteroids (mometasone) for the treatment of allergic rhinitis) made by Indian Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd. is effective and safe in patients aged 60 years and older, who are diagnosed with the above disease.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate survival and peri-implant bone levels of single, immediately loaded post-extractive implants in the anterior maxilla 12 months after implant placement. Thirty-six consecutive patients from 3 study centers were included in the study. The concerned sites were upper premolars, canines, and incisors. For each patient the following data were recorded: reason for tooth extraction, bone quality, implant size, and final insertion torque. Implants were placed using a flapless technique and immediately loaded with a nonoccluding temporary restoration. Final restorations were provided 4 months later. Peri-implant bone resorption was evaluated radiographically after 6 and 12 months. The average final insertion torque was 70.55 Ncm. One implant inserted in D3 quality bone with a 35-Ncm seating torque was lost. All other implants had a final insertion torque ranging between 50 and 80 Ncm. The average peri-implant bone loss was 0.437 and 0.507 mm at 6 and 12 months, respectively. All the sites maintained excellent papillae and peri-implant soft-tissue conditions. The resulting 1-year success rate was 97.2%. Immediate nonfunctional loading of single post-extractive implants in the anterior maxilla is a predictable treatment. And it seems that achieving high insertion torques by placing self-tapping/self-condensing implants in an underprepared osteotomy is favorable.

TJ-137 administered to patients with chronic ITP increased the platelet count "slightly" or more in 31.7% of the patients and showed a clinical effect in 40.9% with a rating of "modestly effective" or better. With a low incidence of adverse reactions, TJ-137 is ex pected to be a new drug for the treatment of ITP.
