This paper attempts to undertake a comparative analysis of resistance characteristics between newly developed asymmetrical catamaran hull forms which were derived from existing conventional NPL series of round bilge catamaran hull forms by Molland, Wellicome and Couser (1994). A set of asymmetrical catamaran hull forms with waterline length of 1.6 m with a separation ratio (s/L) of 0.4 were generated by using standard modelling software. The resistance analysis had been carried out by using STAR CCM+, a computational fluid dynamics package for Froude numbers of 0.25, 0.30, 0.60, 0.80 and 1.0. Literature survey indicates that there is scant historical background in public domain to perform resistance analysis on asymmetrical catamaran hull forms. As this is not feasible due to lack of data in areas that were considered crucial, separate resistance analysis is carried out for each hull configuration. Finally, the compared resistance results will attempt to conclude whether asymmetrical catamaran hull forms are more efficient than the conventional catamaran hull forms.

The need for high performance and green aircraft has brought the blended wing (BWB) aircraft concept to the centre of interest for many researchers. BWB is a type of aircraft characterized by a complex blending geometry between fuselage and wing. Recently, many researches had been performed to unlock its aerodynamic complexity that is still not well understood. In this paper, aerodynamic characteristic of a baseline BWB configuration derived from simple conventional aircraft configuration was analysed using the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver. The main objectives of this work are to predict the aerodynamic characteristics of the BWB concept at steady flight conditions and at various pitch angles. The results obtained are then compared against a simple conventional aircraft configuration (CAC). The results show that the BWB configuration used has 24% higher L/D ratio than the CAC. The increment to the L/D however is mainly due to lower drag than the improvement in the lift.

Choosing bus as the research object, the aerodynamic characteristics of bus in the coupling of wind-vehicle-bridge system were analyzed by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) numerical algorithm. The variations of state coefficients of bus along with wind yaw angles were simulated when a bus in the different lateral locations of steel box-girder bridge and the minimum critical wind speed was calculated when a bus overturning or sideslip in four different lanes on the bridge.

The performance of low-conductivity unglazed, transpired solar collectors was determined numerically and experimentally. The numerical work consisted of modeling flow conditions, plate geometries, and plate conductivities with modified commercial computational fluid dynamics software, and the experimental work compared the performance of two plate geometries made with high and low conductivity materials under a variety of flow conditions. Good agreement was found between the numerical and experimental results. The results showed that for practical low-conductivity materials, performance differed little from the equivalent plate geometry in high-conductivity material.

Design and analysis of a wind tunnel model for re-entry vehicle configuration is a prolonged and expensive mission. As the aerothermodynamics loads acting on the vehicle are based on geometry, various wind tunnel models need to be built for aerodynamic characterization by experimental procedure. Alternatively, the intention of this article is to present the influence of aerodynamic and aero acoustic characteristics of a typical re-entry capsule by computational fluid dynamics analysis. A typical re-entry capsule is designed using computational design software and it is imported to a computational fluid dynamics solver and flow simulations are done at various input conditions. Stanford University unstructured computational fluid dynamics solver is used for this purpose to solve complex, multiphysics analysis, and optimization tasks. Computational fluid dynamics results are presented to understand the influence of aerodynamic characteristics of a typical re-entry capsule, by visualizing the flow field around the command module at all the flow regimes like subsonic, supersonic, and hypersonic flows. The flow fields are studied in detail and regions of high flow unsteadiness due to wake separated flow zone are identified. Aeroacoustic loading on the command module at these regions especially at shock wave zone are predicted in the present investigation with high order of accuracy.
