Femtosecond laser structuring of dielectrics is an urgent problem for the creation of optical elements. In this work, we performed femtosecond laser nanostructuring of the calcium fluoride surface with the formation of self-organizing periodic gratings with subwavelength periods of the order of 200 and 350 nm. During the work, the dependence of the period of the structures on the wavelength of laser radiation was established, which was confirmed by the simulation results. The structures show a decrease in transmission over the entire visible range, predominantly due to diffraction and light scattering. Keywords: direct laser recording, femtosecond laser pulses, surface functional nano- and micro-optical structures, diffraction.

Amorphous silicon (α-Si) film present an inexpensive and promising material for optoelectronic and nanophotonic applications. Its basic optical and optoelectronic properties are known to be improved via phase transition from amorphous to polycrystalline phase. Infrared femtosecond laser radiation can be considered as a promising nondestructive and facile way to drive uniform in-depth and lateral crystallization of α-Si films that are typically opaque in UV-visible spectral range. However, so far only a few studies reported on utilization of near-IR radiation for laser-induced crystallization of α-Si providing no information regarding optical properties of the resultant polycrystalline Si films. The present work demonstrates efficient and gentle single-pass crystallization of α-Si films induced by their direct irradiation with near-IR femtosecond laser pulses coming at sub-MHz repetition rate. Comprehensive analysis of morphology and composition of laser-annealed films by atomic-force microscopy, optical, micro-Raman and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, as well as numerical modeling of optical spectra, confirmed efficient crystallization of α-Si and high-quality of the obtained films. Moreover, we highlight localized laser-driven crystallization of α-Si as a promising way for optical information encryption, anti-counterfeiting and fabrication of micro-optical elements.

Abstract Within optics, the Pancharatnam-Berry phase enables the design and creation of various flat special optical elements such as top-hat converters. We present a study on engineering efficient vectorial top-hat converters inscribed in glass by high-power femtosecond laser pulses. We phase-encode a top-hat converter and demonstrate how its quality is influenced by various parameters. We investigate theoretically the generation of the top-hat beam under imperfect conditions such as the mismatch of the incident beam width or the misalignment of the center of the converter. Experimental verification of the concept is also presented.

AbstractReal 3-D sub-νm lithography was performed with two-photon polymerization (2PP) using inorganic-organic hybrid polymer (ORMOCER®) resins. The hybrid polymers were synthesized by hydrolysis/polycondensation reactions (modified sol-gel synthesis) which allows one to tailor their material properties towards the respective applications, i.e., dielectrics, optics or passivation. Due to their photosensitive organic functionalities, ORMOCER®s can be patterned by conventional photo-lithography as well as by femtosecond laser pulses at 780 nm. This results in polymerized (solid) structures where the non-polymerized parts can be removed by conventional developers.ORMOCER® structures as small as 200 nm or even below were generated by 2PP of the resins using femtosecond laser pulses. It is demonstrated that ORMOCER®s have the potential to be used in components or devices built up by nm-scale structures such as, e.g., photonic crystals. Aspects of the materials in conjunction to the applied technology are discussed.

Abstract This paper presents the use of pulsed laser stimulation with picosecond and femtosecond laser pulses. We first discuss the resolution improvement that can be expected when using ultrashort laser pulses. Two case studies are then presented to illustrate the possibilities of the pulsed laser photoelectric stimulation in picosecond single-photon and femtosecond two-photon modes.
