Spaces for Music in Sixteenth-Century Paduan Courts

This chapter is dedicated to a particular culture relating to the way one might ideally lead one's life in line with ancient practices and views. The trend in question, which developed in Padua in the first half of the Cinquecento, was promoted by such humanists as Pietro Bembo, Alvise Cornaro and Marco Mantova Benavides. Exceptional connoisseurs of the mores and values of antiquity, these intellectuals personally supervised and directed the building of their homes. Following the model of Hadrian's villa at Tivoli, the complexes of these Paduan residences comprised dwelling areas, pavilions, large gardens and the installation of fountains, statues and rare plants. Inspired by literary sources, the ideal of recreating the ‘ancient’ way of life, in which music played a crucial role, was revived.

Pancasila (five basic principles) serves as the way of life of Indonesian people its first principle regulates the divine values and it is in line with kerik salamat (safety and blessing) which manifests the Islamic values in the cultures and custom in Sumbawa. Kerik salamat is Islamic values living in the society since it is a mirror of the ideal of cultural law of the society. In the nation spirit theory, a law should be born from the nation/society spirits. Good quality regulations should posses three basic principles: juridical, sociological, and philosophical. The value of kerik salamat from an Islamic epistemological dimension spreads in the whole life of the community so that their level of religiousity, karabat (kinship) and saling sating (respect one another) may be maintained sustainably by the people of Sumbawa. Kerik salamat as a norm of life in people of Sumbawa should be recognized and protected because it is a morror of the ideal of law of the people to maintain a harmony so that the value og kinship, and respect among the members of the people may be maintained to keep the oneness and togatherness and also the shame culture (ila). Thi guides them in a strong social tie and legal construction which is full of the values of kinship to keep the existence of the community, and the life pattern in line with the expectation of Gods blessings in the ideal of the law in the people of Sumbawa.

This is a study of a Renaissance artist and his patrons, but with an added complication, insofar as Leone de' Sommi, the gifted academician and playwright in the employ of the dukes of Mantua in the second half of the sixteenth century, was Jewish and a lifelong promoter and protector of his community. The article deals with the complex relationship between the court and the Jewish "università" concerning the drama and the way in which dramatic performances also became part of the political, judicial and social negotiations between the two parties, as well as a study of Leone's role as playwright and negotiator during a period that was arguably one of the best of times for the Jews of Mantua.

John Colet knew Thomas Linacre for approximately three decades, from their mutual residence in Italy during the early 1490s through varied pedagogical, professional, and social contacts in and around London prior to Colet’s death in 1519. It is not certain that Colet knew Linacre’s original Latin translations of Galen’s therapeutic works, the first printed in 1517. Yet several of Colet’s works associate a spiritual physician—a phrase linked to Colet himself at least since Thomas More’s 1504 letter inviting him to London—with Paul’s trope of the mystical body. Using Galenic discourse to describe the “physiology” of the ideal mystical body, Colet emphasizes by contrast a diseased ecclesia in need of healing by the Spirit, who alone can invigorate the mediating “vital spirits” that are spiritual physicians—ministers within the church. Colet’s application of sophisticated Galenic discourse to the mystical body coincided with the humanist interest in Galen’s works evident in Linacre’s translations, and it accompanied growing concern for health related to waves of epidemics in London during the first two decades of the sixteenth century as well as Colet’s involvement in licensure of London physicians. This paper explores the implications of Colet’s adaptation of Galenic principles to the mystical body and suggests that Colet fostered a strain of medical discourse that persisted well into the sixteenth century.

Judaism is often understood as the way of life defined by the Torah of Moses, but it was not always so. This book identifies key moments in the rise of the Torah, beginning with the formation of Deuteronomy, advancing through the reform of Ezra, the impact of the suppression of the Torah by Antiochus Epiphanes and the consequent Maccabean revolt, and the rise of Jewish sectarianism. It also discusses variant forms of Judaism, some of which are not Torah-centered and others which construe the Torah through the lenses of Hellenistic culture or through higher, apocalyptic, revelation. It concludes with the critique of the Torah in the writings of Paul.

The study aims to describe  about abstinence forbids of Belantik Malay community and to obtain  to  know  meaning  and  value  that  contained  in  the  abstinence  forbids.  The  writer found that there were twenty three abstinence forbids of the Belantik Malay community. By applying qualitative descriptive method, it is obtained that the abstinence forbids observed in Belantik Malay contain in terms of the religion, education, custom, and health. In fact, the  abstinence  forbids  had  a  magic  power  that  used  as  a  guidance  the  way  of  life  of Belantik Malay community. They believe that they will get side effects if they disobey them individually and in their group.AbstrakPenelitian  ini  bertujuan    untuk  mendeskripsikan  ungkapan  pantang  larang  dalam masyarakat  Melayu  Belantik.  Selain  itu,  tulisan  ini  juga  bertujuan  untuk  mengetahui makna  dan  nilai  yang  terkandung  dalam  ungkapan  pantang  larang  tersebut.  Penulis menemukan terdapat  dua  puluh  tiga  ungkapan  pantang  larang  dalam masyarakat Melayu Belantik. Melalui metode  deskriptif  kualitatif  tergambar  bahwa  ungkapan  pantang  larang dalam  masyarakat  Melayu  Belantik mengandung  nilai  agama,  pendidikan,  adat,  dan kesehatan.  Ungkapan  pantang  larang  memiliki  “kekuatan  (gaib/ajaib)”  sebagai  penuntun hidup  dan  pedoman  bagi  masyarakat  Melayu  Belantik.  Masyarakat  Melayu  Belantik percaya bahwa peristiwa tersebut apabila mereka langgar atau abaikan akan berakibat bagi kehidupan pribadi atau bahkan masyarakatnya.

This chapter introduces the theme of the book: scientific understanding. Science is arguably the most successful product of the human desire for understanding. Reflection on the nature of scientific understanding is an important and exciting project for philosophers of science, as well as for scientists and interested laypeople. As a first illustration of this, the chapter sketches an episode from the history of science in which discussions about understanding played a crucial role: the genesis of quantum mechanics in the 1920s, and the heated debates about the intelligibility of this theory and the related question of whether it can provide understanding. This case shows that standards of intelligibility of scientists can vary strongly. Furthermore, the chapter outlines and defends the way in which this study approaches its subject, differing essentially from mainstream philosophical discussions of explanatory understanding. It concludes with an overview of the contents of the book.

The main findings from the study, some of which have led to altering perceptions of cheetah biology, are summarized. It is hoped that this will highlight topics for future cheetah research in order to expand knowledge of the species and its role in biodiversity. Comparisons of cheetah ecology and behaviour have been made between the southern Kalahari and other landscapes, especially the Serengeti Plains. These areas are at extremes of the cheetah’s habitat range and therefore differences in the way it has adapted to the southern Kalahari compared with the Serengeti would be expected. The Serengeti Plains, with their vast herds of gazelle and extremely open landscape, might appear to be the ideal habitat for the cheetah. However, it is not that simple and, in some respects cheetahs perform better in the southern Kalahari than they do on the Serengeti Plains. Arid systems are clearly important cheetah habitat.
