One thing that characterizes the OC is the respectful way OC teachers talk with kids. When two former OC teachers who had moved and now teach in different schools viewed a videotape of one of them teaching, the other was struck with how, after many years apart from each other, they still talk to kids the same way. Respectful conversations happen in the OC and in other schools where many exceptional teachers reach out and make connections with students. An OC teacher recounted an event that illustrates the contrast with other ways of interaction: . . . When a junior high school counselor came to register the kids in my room for junior high the next year, there was not an available table where she could sit with a small group. So I said, “Just a minute, I'll get you a space.” I asked a few kids who were working together at a table if we could use it for a while and then they could have it back. We teased each other a little and then the kids packed up their supplies and moved to work on the floor. The counselor said, “Is that how you talk to kids usually?” I said yes. She told me that in her school adults didn't treat kids like that at all— “There's hardly anyone who would have fun with kids, or even ask them for the table.” I was so stunned, I asked her what she would have done in that situation. She said she would have told them to just “move out, I need the table.” So there would have been no conversation. I asked her if that was the way the whole school interacted with children, and she said there was one person who talked just like me, and it turned out to be a former OC co-oper who now teaches there. . . . If the classroom structure allows conversations, people can learn to converse with respect. Children themselves can play a role in helping adults communicate with them.

The problem was one well-known to upper elementary and junior high school teachers—a student who has been instructed for several years in the rote application of an algorithm, who is generally not successful with it, but whose mental set prevents him from accepting a different approach. Laurie and Patty were perfect examples.

Development of computational skills with fractions has long been a part of the upper elementary and junior high school mathematics program. Current movements toward metrication have led some individuals to suggest that decimals will receive more attention in the mathematics curriculum with a corresponding de-emphasis on fractions. The suggestion may find an increased number of supporters, as recurring evidence indicates that pupil performance with fractions is discouragingly low. An alternative point of view is that although metrication may somewhat alter work with fractions, their importance within the structure of mathematics and to applications justifies their continued emphasis in the curriculum.

During one of my small-group math lessons, I decided to challenge a group of students. Our entire class had been working on basic missingaddend problems throughout the week. The problems had seemed easy for these six students. I had not yet instructed my class on two-digit addition and subtraction, but I gave this small group some two-digit, missing-addend problems. I handed each of them a whiteboard and a marker and told them they could use any strategy they wanted to find the correct answer.

Abstract: The lack of students’ knowledge about the relationship between culture and mathematics requires an innovation in the learning process in the classroom. Some schools use teaching materials with almost no material related to Banjar culture. Learners are only emphasized in working on exercise questions without an in-depth understanding of the concept about the use of mathematics contextually, especially in the implementation of ethnomathematics based on Banjar culture. The purpose of this study is to produce a Student Worksheet (LKPD) about number patterns based on ethnomathematics sasirangan in grade VIII of junior high school that is valid, practical, and effective. This study uses the Plomp development model which consists of an initial investigation phase, a design phase, a realization / construction phase, a test, evaluation and revision phase. In the test, evaluation, and revision phases the validity test was carried out by four validators and a small group trial with a total of six research subjects to measure the practicality and effectiveness of LKPD. The results of the validity test against LKPD developed showed that LKPD reached valid criteria. The results of small group trials showed that LKPD achieve practical criteria in terms of the questionnaire response and effectiveness criteria viewed from the learning outcomes of students. Thus, this study produced LKPD about number patters on ethnomatemics sasirangan-based in grade VIII of junior high school that is valid, practical, and effective. Keywords: development, LKPD, number patterns, ethnomathematics, sasirangan.
