Investigation of Tubular Electrodes Designed for Submerged Arc Welding Applications
Keyword(s):
This paper reports on an investigation into the benefits of using new-generation flux-cored electrodes in the submerged arc welding process. The validity of manufacturers' claims of improved physical properties and economies of welds produced with the new electrode is examined by comparison with standard solid electrode performance. The tests are based on application of weld metal to four different grades of steel common to both commercial and naval ship construction. The authors conclude that for some, but not all, applications, the flux-cored—or tubular—electrode is a marked improvement.
