Los repositorios institucionales representan la denominada Vía Verde del movimiento Acceso Abierto, facilitando el acceso a la información y la gestión de la memoria científica de las universidades y centros de investigación. En ese sentido, no solo debe optimizarse su funcionamiento en términos de garantizar la organización y recuperación de los documentos sino también, los procesos de interoperabilidad y preservación digital. Es aquí donde el Open Archival Information System (OAIS) ha tomado lugar como el estándar que orienta y optimiza los procesos de cara a la preservación digital. A partir de lo anterior, este artículo da cuenta de los resultados de una investigación documental sobre el uso del modelo OAIS en repositorios institucionales, para ello se presenta la metodología de búsqueda desarrollada y el análisis de los factores a considerar en la gestión de los repositorios. Los resultados recopilan experiencias y categorías de implementación, principios básicos y esquemas de funcionamiento para atender condiciones de integralidad, interoperabilidad y facilidad en la recuperación y preservación de la memoria científica y académica de las instituciones. Principalmente se puede evidenciar una tendencia a modelos y arquitecturas distribuidas, mayor cantidad de experiencias en Europa y Estados Unidos y el uso de sistemas y software como DSpace, Lockss y Archivematica. The institutional repositories represent the so-called Greenway of the Open Access movement, facilitating access to information and the management of the scientific memory of universities and research centers. In this sense, its operation should not only be optimized in terms of guaranteeing the organization and retrieval of documents, but also optimizing the processes of interoperability and digital preservation. It is here where the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) has taken place as the standard that guides and optimizes processes for digital preservation. Based on the above, this article reports the results of documentary research on the use of the OAIS model in institutional repositories, for this purpose the developed search methodology and the analysis of the factors to be considered in the management of the repositories are presented. The results compile experiences and implementation categories, basic principles, and operating schemes to meet conditions of comprehensiveness, interoperability, and ease in the recovery and preservation of the scientific and academic memory of the institutions. Mainly a trend towards distributed models and architectures, a greater number of experiences in Europe and the United States and the use of systems and software such as DSpace, Lockss, and Archivematica can be evidenced.

Truck parking is a crucial element of the United States’ transportation system as it provides truckers with safe places to rest and stage for deliveries. Demand for truck parking spaces exceeds supply and shortages are especially common in and around urban areas. Freight operations are negatively affected as truck drivers are unable to park in logistically ideal locations. Drivers may resort to unsafe practices such as parking on ramps or in abandoned lots. This report seeks to examine the potential parking availability of vacant urban parcels by establishing a methodology to identify parcels and examining whether the identified parcels are suitable for truck parking. Previous research has demonstrated that affordable, accessible parcels are available to accommodate truck parking. When used in conjunction with other policies, adaptation of urban sites could help reduce the severity of truck parking shortages. Geographic information system parcel and roadway data were obtained for one urban area in each of the 10 Mid America Association of Transportation Officials region states. Area and proximity filters were applied followed by spectral analysis of satellite imagery to identify candidate parcels for truck parking facilities within urban areas. The automated processes created a ranked short list of potential parcels from which those best suited for truck parking could be efficiently identified for inspection by satellite imagery. This process resulted in a manageable number of parcels to be evaluated further by local knowledge metrics such as availability and cost, existing infrastructure and municipal connections, and safety.

This paper discusses the importance of a particular approach to building and sustaining digital content preservation infrastructures for cultural memory organizations (CMOs), namely distributed approaches that are cooperatively maintained by CMOs (rather than centralized approaches managed by agencies external to CMOs), and why this approach may fill a gap in capabilities for those CMOs actively digitizing historical and cultural content (rather than scientific data). Initial findings are presented from an early organizational effort (the MetaArchive Cooperative) that seeks to fill this gap for CMOs. The paper situates these claims in the larger context of selected exemplars of DP efforts in both the United States and the United Kingdom that are seeking to develop effective DP models in an attempt to recognize those organizational aspects (such as the governmental frameworks, cultural backgrounds, and other differences in emphasis) that are UK and US-specific.

The Planets Project is developing services and technology to address core challenges in digital preservation. This article introduces the motivation for this work, describes the extensible technical architecture and places the Planets approach into the context of the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) Reference Model. It also provides a scenario demonstrating Planets’ usefulness in solving real-life digital preservation problems and an overview of the project’s progress to date.

The study from which this article is drawn constitutes one of the first attempts to remedy the paucity of research on accountability in the context of interorganizational networks and public–private partnerships. The data for the study were drawn from field research focusing particularly on partnerships formed between K-12 public schools and private and/or non-profit organizations in the United States. The most frequently cited difficulties associated with accountability in partnerships were the availability of and access to information, sectoral and personal differences, and frequent changes in personnel, resources, and partners.
