Regional analysis is the term given to those techniques permitting estimation of parameters for those areas in which measurements of the parameters are not available. In this case study two techniques, index-flood regional analysis and a simplified square grid method, were used to estimate design floods for culverts on the proposed Mackenzie highway. The results of these two techniques were compared with design floods estimated by the rational equation, slope–area method and an envelope of recorded extremes. The regional analysis techniques give design flows at least an order of magnitude less than those of other techniques.
