This article presents the materials of the research conducted by the author within the framework of the scientific project “Architects and Engineers of the Eastern Suburbs of Russia” (late XIX – early XX century)". The paper touches upon the spheres and results of activity of the graduates of Saint Petersburg Institute of Civil Engineering, who worked in Yakutsk in the pre-October period. Brief biographical records are provided on the following civil engineers: A. N. Aristov, N. V. Baumgarten, G. F. Katsienko, A. I. Kudryavtsev, K. A. Leshevich, G. V. Rozen, I. F. Tamulevich, and V. A. Shkalin. The significance of the preserved objects of artistic heritage of the graduates of Saint Petersburg Institute of Civil Engineering in the site development of the historical core of Yakutsk is described. Based on the field surveys and archival findings, the author presents the holistic picture of creative and professional activity of the graduates of Saint Petersburg Institute of Civil Engineering who worked in Yakutsk in the late XIX – early XX centuries. It is established that the administrative, urban planning and creative activity of civil engineers associated with routine work in the local government  bodies, coordination and planning of the projects of facilities of various purposes, had a considerable impact upon the development of regional architecture, and as well as new construction technologies of the large public buildings in the conditions of permafrost.

The Civil Engineering course teaches different subjects in its academic program, which has in their educational task to offer knowledge to students, their intervention in the environmental space, within the framework of their actions as future civil engineers. The objective of the research is to reflect on the knowledge acquired in the environmental training of students of the civil engineering career. For this purpose, the standardized survey technique was used with structured questions that collected the work of the educational program of the race and was applied to 75 students of the different levels. The result obtained allowed to know to what extent the environmental training of students, has repercussions on the preparation of future civil engineers, in addition to the degree of concern for environmental problems and the predisposition to work in order to reduce the impacts derived from the professional practice of The Civil Engineering, taking into account the implication of the sustainable development in the academic formation. During the investigation it was verified that students are aware of the importance of preservation and respect for nature through the use of clean energies, where they have expressed concern about contamination and depletion of natural resources. The results obtained can have a positive influence on the constructive future of the province, depending on the implementation of an appropriate sustainable development policy.

In the field of civil engineering, the meteorological data available usually do not have the detailed information of the wind near a certain site. However, the detailed information of the wind field during typhoon is important for the wind-resistant design of civil structures. Furthermore, the resolution of the meteorological data available by the civil engineers is too coarse to be applicable. Therefore it is meaningful to obtain the detailed information of the wind fields based on the meteorological data provided by the meteorological department. Therefore, in the present study, a one-way coupling method between WRF and CFD is adopted and a method to keep the mass conservation during the simulation in CFD is proposed. It is found that using the proposed one-way coupling method, the predicted wind speed is closer to the measurement. And the curvature of the wind streamline during typhoon is successfully reproduced.

Walter Rosenhain was born in Melbourne, Australia [hand writen note: Berlin (see DNB 1931-40)], on August 24, 1875. His early education was at Wesley College in that City, from which he passed to Queen’s College in the University of Melbourne, graduating in Physics and Engineering in 1897. He came to England as the holder of an 1851 Exhibition Scholarship, and entered St. John’s College, Cambridge, with the intention of studying civil engineering. He carried out an investigation on steam jets, published in the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers, but the direction of his life’s work was determined on his arrival, when he consulted Professor (now Sir Alfred) Ewing, as to a suitable subject for research. The study of metals by means of the microscope, following the methods so brilliantly devised by H. C. Sorby, was then making rapid progress in the hands of such men as Roberts-Austen, Stead, Osmond and Arnold. Professor Ewing suggested that it would be of interest to examine how the crystal grains of a metal behaved when they were deformed plastically.

In construction industries, new construction materials are needed to overcome some problems associated with the use of conventional construction materials due to the change of environmental and social requirements. Accordingly, the requirements to be satisfied in the design of civil engineering structures are diversified. As a new construction material in the civil engineering industries, fiber reinforced polymeric plastic (FRP) has a superior corrosion resistance, high specific strength/stiffness, etc. Therefore, such properties can be used to mitigate the problems associated with the use of conventional construction materials. Nowadays, new types of bridge piers and marine piles are being studied for new construction. They are made of concrete filled fiber reinforced polymeric plastic tubes (CFFT). In this paper, a new type of FRP-concrete composite pile which is composed of reinforced concrete filled FRP tube (RCFFT) is proposed to improve compressive strength as well as flexural strength of an RCFFT. The load carrying capacity of proposed RCFFT is discussed based on the result of experimental and analytical investigations.

The textbook is a compilation based on the authentic texts adapted from websites and magazines (USA, UK, Canada) and is intended for civil engineering students. One of the aims of this project has been to develop materials both for testing the foreign language competence of civil engineers and for teaching them the language that they need to require for their professional certification. I do not assume that my users will have an in-depth knowledge of civil engineering works. Therefore, the units have been devised to help students improve their knowledge and use of English in an engineering environment. Each unit covers vocabulary related to a certain topic area- ranging from basic civil engineering vocabulary to roads, architecture, bridges, types of foundations and so on- and is designed to reinforce and improve their communicative skills.

In 2015, the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – “a plan for people, planet and prosperity”, which includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that service as a roadmap for the national and international policies that should be implemented to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. Society, Economy and Environment are recognized as the three pillars for sustainable development. After several attempts to identify and agree upon a global policy for a sustainable future, it is time for implementation. It is time now for global Engineers to get involved in order to bring results in the direction of the implementation of the SDGs. The two European Civil Engineering associations, the European Civil Engineering Education and Training Association (EUCEET) and the Association of European Civil Engineering Faculties (AECEF), joined their forces to investigate the very important issue of “The role of education for Civil Engineers in the implementation of the SDGs”. The topics of the conference are related, but not limited, to the following SDGs: SDG4 - Quality education SDG6 - Clean water and sanitation SDG7 - Affordable and clean energy SDG8 – Decent work and economic growth SDG9 – Industry, innovation and infrastructure SDG11 – Sustainable cities and communities SDG13 – Climate action SDG14 – Life below water SDG15 – Life on land
