A Gram-positive, coccobacillus, white raised and circular with an entire edge colony, and obligately anaerobic bacterium, strain SW178 was isolated from the cecum content of feral chickens in Brookings, South Dakota, USA. The most closely related strain based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of strain SW178 was Mediterraneibacter torques ATCC 27756T (Ruminococcus torques ATCC 27756T) with 96.94% similarity. The genome of strain SW178 is 3.18 Mbp with G+C content of 46.9 mol%. The optimal temperature and pH for growth in modified brain heart infusion (BHI-M) medium were 45 °C and pH 7.5, respectively. The sole carbon sources of the strain were dextrin, L-fucose, D-galacturonic, α-D-glucose, L-rhamnose and D-sorbitol. The primary cellular fatty acids were C14 : 0, C16 : 0 and C16 : 0 dimethyl acetal (DMA). Based on the genotypic and phenotypic comparison, we proposed that strain SW178 belong to the genus Mediterraneibacter in the family Lachnospiraceae as a novel species, in which the name Mediterraneibacter catenae is proposed. The type strain is SW178 (= DSM 109242T = CCOS 1886T).

An equol-producing bacterium, strain DZET, which was isolated from human faeces, was characterized by morphological, biochemical and molecular methods. The isolate was Gram-positive, obligately anaerobic, non-spore-forming, asaccharolytic and rod-shaped. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed 92.8, 91.0, 91.1 and 90.6 % similarities with Slackia faecicanis, Slackia exigua, Slackia heliotrinireducens and Slackia isoflavoniconvertens, respectively. Based on these data, we propose a novel species of the genus Slackia, Slackia equolifaciens sp. nov. The major cellular fatty acids are C14 : 0, C18 : 1 ω9c and C18 : 1 ω9c DMA (dimethyl acetal). The DNA G+C content of the strain is 60.8 mol%. The type strain of S. equolifaciens sp. nov. is DZET (=JCM 16059T =CCUG 58231T).

ABSTRACT A new Ruminococcaceae bacterium, strain HV4-5-B5C, participating in the anaerobic digestion of grass, was isolated from a mesophilic two-stage laboratory-scale leach bed biogas system. The draft annotated genome sequence presented in this study and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated the affiliation of HV4-5-B5C with the family Ruminococcaceae outside recently described genera.

A Gram-reaction-positive, rod-shaped, non-motile, non-spore-forming bacterium (strain BX5-10T) was isolated from the soil of a ginseng field on Baekdu Mountain in Jilin district, China. The taxonomic position of this bacterium was determined in an investigation based on a polyphasic approach. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain BX5-10T was shown to belong to the family Nocardioidaceae and to be most closely related to Nocardioides plantarum NCIMB 12834T (96.5 % sequence similarity), Nocardioides dokdonensis KCTC 19309T (96.2 %) and Nocardioides fonticola NAA-13T (95.1 %). Strain BX5-10T was characterized chemotaxonomically as having ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid in its cell-wall peptidoglycan, MK-8(H4) as the predominant menaquinone and C18 : 1ω9c, C16 : 0 and C17 : 1ω8c as its major fatty acids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 70.3 mol%. The novel strain could be differentiated genotypically and phenotypically from all recognized species of the genus Nocardioides. Based on the results of the phylogenetic analyses and the genotypic and phenotypic data, a novel species, Nocardioides ginsengagri sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is BX5-10T ( = KCTC 19467T = DSM 21362T).

A Gram-reaction-positive, aerobic, coccus- to rod-shaped, non-motile, non-spore-forming bacterium (strain UKS-03T) was isolated from a sediment sample of Ungok Lake in Gochang, Republic of Korea. The taxonomic position of this bacterium was determined in an investigation based on a polyphasic approach. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain UKS-03T was shown to belong to the family Nocardioidaceae and to be related most closely to Nocardioides ginsengisegetis Gsoil 485T (98.5 % similarity), Nocardioides koreensis MSL-09T (98.4 %) and ‘Nocardioides panaciterrulae’ Gsoil 958 (97.3 %). Strain UKS-03T was characterized chemotaxonomically as having ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid in its cell-wall peptidoglycan, MK-8(H4) as the predominant menaquinone, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol as the main polar lipids, and iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1ω8c and C17 : 0 10-methyl as its major fatty acids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 71.9 mol%. Mean DNA–DNA relatedness values between strain UKS-03T and N. ginsengisegetis Gsoil 485T, N. koreensis KCTC 19272T and ‘N. panaciterrulae’ Gsoil 958 were 37.5 ± 7.2, 6.8 ± 0.9 and 3.1 ± 0.7 %, respectively. On the basis of the data from this polyphasic taxonomic study, strain UKS-03T represents a novel species of the genus Nocardioides, for which the name Nocardioides ungokensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is UKS-03T ( = KACC 18304T = LMG 28591T).

A Gram-negative, aerobic, non-motile, yellow-pigmented, rod-shaped bacterium (strain JS-08T) isolated from seawater was subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain JS-08T belongs to the genus Myroides, a member of the phylum Bacteroidetes. Its closest phylogenetic relative was Myroides odoratimimus JCM 7460T, with which it shared 97.0 % 16S RNA gene sequence similarity. Strain JS-08T contained menaquinone-6 (MK-6) as the predominant menaquinone, and the dominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and a summed feature consisting of iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c. The DNA G+C content of strain JS-08T was 34.2 mol%. Based on phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic evidence, it is suggested that strain JS-08T represents a novel species of the genus Myroides, for which the name Myroides marinus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is JS-08T ( = KCTC 23023T  = JCM 16529T).

An arsenite-oxidizing bacterium, designated strain ULPAs1T, was isolated from industrial sludge heavily contaminated with arsenic. Cells of this isolate were Gram-negative, curved rods, motile by means of a polar flagellum. The strain was positive for oxidase and catalase activities, was able to reduce nitrate to nitrite, used acetate, lactate and peptone as organic carbon sources under aerobic conditions and was able to oxidize arsenite (As[III]) to arsenate (As[V]). 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and the absence of dodecanoic fatty acids suggested that this strain represents a member of the genus Herminiimonas of the family Oxalobacteraceae, order Burkholderiales in the Betaproteobacteria. Genomic DNA–DNA hybridization between strain ULPAs1T and Herminiimonas fonticola S-94T and between strain ULPAs1T and Herminiimonas aquatilis CCUG 36956T revealed levels of relatedness of <10 %, well below the recommended 70 % species cut-off value. Thus, strain ULPAs1T (=CCM 7303T=DSM 17148T=LMG 22961T) is the type strain of a novel species of Herminiimonas, for which the name Herminiimonas arsenicoxydans sp. nov. is proposed.

Three novel heterotrophic, Gram-negative, yellow-pigmented, aerobic, gliding, oxidase- and catalase-positive bacteria were isolated from algae collected in the Gulf of Peter the Great, Sea of Japan. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that the strains studied represented members of the family Flavobacteriaceae and showed 93·5–93·8 % similarity with their closest relative, Psychroserpens burtonensis. The DNA G+C content of the strains was 34–37 mol%. The major respiratory quinone was MK-6. The predominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1, iso-C16 : 0-3OH and iso-C17 : 0-3OH. On the basis of their phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, genotypic and phylogenetic characteristics, the newly described bacteria have been assigned to the new genus Winogradskyella gen. nov., as Winogradskyella thalassocola sp. nov. (type strain, KMM 3907T=KCTC 12221T=LMG 22492T=DSM 15363T), Winogradskyella epiphytica sp. nov. (type strain, KMM 3906T=KCTC 12220T=LMG 22491T=CCUG 47091T) and Winogradskyella eximia sp. nov. (type strain, KMM 3944T (=KCTC 12219T=LMG 22474T).

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacterium (strain JM-1396T) producing a yellow pigment, was isolated from the healthy internal stem tissue of post-harvest cotton (Gossypium hirsutum, cultivar ‘DES-119’) grown at the Plant Breeding Unit at the E. V. Smith Research Center in Tallassee (Macon county), AL, USA. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of strain JM-1396T showed high sequence similarity values to the type strains of Novosphingobium mathurense, Novosphingobium panipatense (both 98.6 %) and Novosphingobium barchaimii (98.5 %); sequence similarities to all other type strains of species of the genus Novosphingobium were below 98.3 %. DNA–DNA pairing experiments of the DNA of strain JM-1396T and N. mathurense SM117T, N. panipatense SM16T and N. barchaimii DSM 25411T showed low relatedness values of 8 % (reciprocal 7 %), 24 % (reciprocal 26 %) and 19 % (reciprocal 25 %), respectively. Ubiquinone Q-10 was detected as the dominant quinone; the fatty acids C18 : 1ω7c (71.0 %) and the typical 2-hydroxy fatty acid, C14 : 0 2-OH (11.7 %), were detected as typical components. The polar lipid profile contained the diagnostic lipids diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, sphingoglycolipid and phosphatidylcholine. The polyamine pattern contained the major compound spermidine and only minor amounts of other polyamines. All these data revealed that strain JM-1396T represents a novel species of the genus Novosphingobium. For this reason we propose the name Novosphingobium gossypii sp. nov. with the type strain JM-1396T ( = LMG 28605T = CCM 8569T = CIP 110884T).

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, orange-coloured, catalase- and oxidase-positive, non-motile bacterium, designated strain 92VT, was isolated from the marine sponge Amphilectus fucorum, collected from Lough Hyne, County Cork, Ireland. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain 92VT clustered with members of the family Flavobacteriaceae , the closest member being Aquimarina latercula NCIMB 1399T, with a gene sequence similarity of 97.5 %. Strain 92VT required seawater for growth with optimal growth occurring at 25 °C, at pH 6–7 and with 3 % (w/v) NaCl. MK-6 was the sole respiratory quinone present and the major fatty acids were iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 1ω9c and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH. The DNA G+C content was 36.1 mol%. Combined phenotypic differences and phylogenetic analysis indicate that strain 92VT represents a novel species of the genus Aquimarina , for which the name Aquimarina amphilecti sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 92VT ( = NCIMB 14723T = DSM 25232T).

A bacterial strain, DC-186T, isolated from home-made compost, was characterized for its phenotypic and phylogenetic properties. The isolate was a Gram-negative rod that was able to grow at 15–36 °C and pH 5.5–8.0. Strain DC-186T was positive in tests for catalase, oxidase and β-galactosidase activities and aesculin hydrolysis. The predominant fatty acids were the summed feature C16 : 1/iso-C15 : 0 2-OH (42 %) and iso-C15 : 0 (26 %), the major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-7 and the genomic DNA G+C content was 42 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and phenetic characterization indicated that this organism belongs to the phylum Bacteroidetes and revealed its affiliation to the family Sphingobacteriaceae. Of recognized taxa, strain DC-186T was most closely related to Sphingobacterium daejeonense (90 % sequence similarity) based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with other recognized taxa and the identification of distinctive phenetic features for this isolate support the definition of a new genus within the family Sphingobacteriaceae. The name Pseudosphingobacterium domesticum gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed, with strain DC-186T (=CCUG 54353T=LMG 23837T) as the type strain.
