For computer vision systems to effectively perform diagnoses, identification, tracking, monitoring and surveillance, image data must be devoid of noise. Various types of noises such as Salt-and-pepper or Impulse, Gaussian, Shot, Quantization, Anisotropic, and Periodic noises corrupts images making it difficult to extract relevant information from them. This has led to a lot of proposed algorithms to help fix the problem. Among the proposed algorithms, the median filter has been successful in handling salt-and-pepper noise and preserving edges in images. However, its moderate to high running time and poor performance when images are corrupted with high densities of noise, has led to various proposed modifications of the median filter. The challenge observed with all these modifications is the trade-off between efficient running time and quality of denoised images. This paper proposes an algorithm that delivers quality denoised images in low running time. Two state-of-the-art algorithms are combined into one and a technique called Mid-Value-Decision-Median introduced into the proposed algorithm to deliver high quality denoised images in real-time. The proposed algorithm, High-Performance Modified Decision Based Median Filter (HPMDBMF) runs about 200 times faster than the state-of-the-art Modified Decision Based Median Filter (MDBMF) and still generate equivalent output.

For the poor performance of conventional filtering algorithms in removing salt and pepper noise from digital images under high noise density,an adaptive switching median filter algorithm based on BP neural network optimized by genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed to detect and remove salt and pepper noise from images. Firstly, the initial weights and thresholds of BP neural network are optimized by genetic algorithm. Then image pixels are devided into either signal or noise points by the trained network automatically. The detected noise points will be removed by adaptive switching median filter algorithm, but nothing to do with the signal points. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms the others and efficiently removes salt and pepper noise from digital images without distorting image details and textures .

Nowadays, during the process of Image acquisition and transmission, image information data can be corrupted by impulse noise. That noise is classified as salt and pepper noise and random impulse noise depending on the noise values. A median filter is widely used digital nonlinear filter  in edge preservation, removing of impulse noise and smoothing of signals. Median filter is the widely used to remove salt and pepper noise than rank order filter, morphological filter, and unsharp masking filter. The median filter replaces a sample with the middle value among all the samples present inside the sample window. A median filter will be of two types depending on the number of samples processed at the same cycle i.e, bit level architecture and word level architecture.. In this paper, Carry Look-ahead Adder median filter method will be introduced to improve the hardware resources used in median filter architecture for 5 window and 9 window for 8 bit and 16 bit median filter architecture.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to present a study of digital technology approaches to image restoration. This process of image restoration is crucial in many areas such as satellite imaging, astronomical image & medical imaging where degraded images need to be repaired Personal images captured by various digital cameras can easily be manipulated by a variety of dedicated image processing algorithms [2]. Image restoration can be described as an important part of image processing technique. Image restoration has proved to be an active field of research in the present days. The basic objective is to enhance the quality of an image by removing defects and make it look pleasing [2]. In this paper, an image restoration algorithm based on the mean and median calculation of a pixel has been implemented. We focused on a certain iterative process to carry out restoration. The algorithm has been tested on different images with different percentage of salt and pepper noise. The improved PSNR and MSE values has been obtained. Keywords: De-Noising, Image Filtering, Mean Filter & Median Filter, Salt and Pepper Noise, Denoising Techniques, Image Restoration.

A skyline query retrieves all objects in a dataset that are not dominated by other objects according to some given criteria. There exist many skyline algorithms which can be classified into generic, index-based, and lattice-based algorithms. This chapter takes a tour through lattice-based skyline algorithms. It summarizes the basic concepts and properties, presents high-performance parallel approaches, shows how one overcomes the low-cardinality restriction of lattice structures, and finally presents an application on data streams for real-time skyline computation. Experimental results on synthetic and real datasets show that lattice-based algorithms outperform state-of-the-art skyline techniques, and additionally have a linear runtime complexity.
