The present investigation consisted of eight parents of linseed which were crossed as per diallel analysis [1] (Model 1 and Method 2) in Rabi 2010-11 to generate 28 crosses (excluding reciprocals). These 28 crosses were evaluated along with eight parents and three checks viz: T-397, Neelum and Allahabad Local in RBD having three replications during 2011-12 at the Field Experimentation Centre of Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences, Allahabad. The data were recorded on ten characters to study the combining ability. The significant mean sum of squares for all the ten characters indicated the presence of a substantial amount of variability. Per se performance for seed yield and its components depicted that cross M-42 (169) × POLF-19 (1765) was found to be best. Analysis of variance for combining ability showed significant differences for all the characters. The parents FRW-6 (973) and POLF-19 (1765) were good general combiner for seedyield and most of the traits. Highest positive SCA effect for seed yield per plant was depicted by the cross PbD2-42 (2789) × GS-129 (1018).

Combining ability and heterosis were calculated for fourteen lines of linseed in a line × tester mating design using twelve lines and two diverse testers in two different environments. The hybrids and parental lines were raised in a completely randomized block design with three replications to investigate seed and fibre yield and their component traits. Genetic variation was significant for most of the traits over environments. Combining ability studies revealed that the lines KL-221 and LCK-9826 were good general combiners for seed yield and most of its components, whereas LMH-62 and LC-2323 were good general combiners for yield components only. Moreover, KL-221 was also a good general combiner for fibre yield. Similarly, B-509 and Ariane were good general combiners for fibre yield and most of its components. Among the specific cross combinations, B-509 × Flak-1 was outstanding for seed yield per plant and B-509 × KL-187 and LC-2323 × LCK-9826 for fibre yield per plant, with high SCA effects. In general, the hybrids excelled their respective parents and the standard checks for most of the characters studied. Based on the comparison of mean performance, SCA effects and the extent of heterosis, the hybrids LC-2323 × LCK-9826 and B-509 × KL-221 appeared to be the most promising for both seed and fibre yield. Other promising combinations were LC-2323 × KL-210 and B-509 × Ariane for seed and fibre yield, respectively. The superiority of LC-2323, LCK-9826, KL-221, B-509 and Ariane as good general combiners was further confirmed by the involvement of these parents in the desirable cross combinations.

Twenty eight hybrids developed from eight genotypes of linseed through diallel mating design (excluding reciprocal) along with one checks viz., Shekhar were evaluated in randomized block design with three replications for eleven distinct morphological traits during rabi season of 2012-13, to estimate the general combining ability (GCA) of the parents and specific combining ability (SCA) of hybrids considered for the development of high yielding varieties. The analysis of variance for combining ability revealed significant mean sum of squares due to GCA and SCA for all the traits under study. Genotype EC-1392 (0.50) and TL-11 (0.45) has been found good general combiner with highest magnitude of GCA effects for seed yield per plant. In addition to above, EC-1392 and TL-11 also showed good GCA effects for plant height, secondary branches per plant, capsules per plant and biological yield per plant. Hybrids A.95.B x Shekhar (2.43), TL-11 x EC-1392 (1.71) and NDL-2004-05 x GS-234 (1.53) showed higher positive significant SCA effects for seed yield per plant. These hybrids also exhibited positive significant SCA effects for plant height, secondary brances per plant, capsules per plant, indicating potential for exploiting hybrid vigour in breeding programme.

An experiment was carried out using seven cytoplasmic-genetic male sterile (CGMS) lines as females and seven diversified testers as males in a line × tester design. The analysis of variance for parents, females x males, hybrids and parents vs hybrids showed significant differences for almost all characters studied indicating the presence of sufficient variability among parents. Analysis of variance for combining ability revealed that mean squares due to females and line x tester interaction were significant for most of the characters. Thereby it is suggested that the variation in hybrids in respect of seed yield may be strongly influenced by the female lines. Analysis of variance revealed that the ratio of variance due to GCA to SCA was less than unity for all the characters indicating that these traits may be under the influence of non additive gene action and these characters are more likely to be improved through heterosis breeding. The gca effects of parents revealed that ICPA-2043, ICPA-2047, ICPA-2078, AKT-9913, BDN-2 and GRG-811 were good general combiners for seed yield and it’s direct compo-nents. The top three crosses exhibiting high specific combing ability effects along with their Per se performance, standard heterosis and gca status of the parents indicated that the cross combinations ICPA-2092 x GRG-811, ICPA-2043 x ICP-7035 and ICPA-2047 x RVKP-261 were good specific combiners for seed yield. These parental combinations are being used for exploitation of hybrid vigour. The good general combiners (ICPA-2043, ICPA-2047, ICPA-2078, AKT-9913, BDN-2 and GRG-811) and promising crosses viz. ICPA-2047 x GRG-811 and ICPA-2047 x BDN-2 were resistant for SMD and Fusarium wilt diseases, having high mean performance, positive sca effects for seed yield were identified from the present investigation and these may be useful in future breeding program.

A half diallel of nine genetically diverse varieties was made and the resulting 36 F 1 populations were evaluated along with the parents. The analysis of variance indicated that heterosis was significant for all the characters, except test weight. The heterosis components were also significant for most of the traits studied. The specific heterosis component accounted for more than 80% of the overall heterosis, indicating a complex type of inheritance for seed yield and its component traits. The crosses JF 29 × Local, RF 125 × JF 29 and UF (M)-1 × RF 101 exhibited significant positive heterobeltiosis for seed yield per plant. The parents RF125 and JF 29 merit attention as parents in the development of hybrids. The use of recurrent selection and the development of composites are suggested as ways to improve yielding ability in fennel.

The present investigation was aimed to study the combining ability and gene action in parents and hybrids of sunflower for seed yield and components traits. Six female lines were crossed with four male lines by Line x Tester method, to obtain 24 F1s. Data were recorded on ten characters. Among the female parents CMS-108A, CMS-250A and CMS-207A were good general combiners for seed yield and other contributing traits. Among the male parents, IB-22, EC-178178, EC-601957 were identified as the best general combiners for seed yield and other yield contributing traits. The crosses showing high desirable SCA effect have involved one of the parents of high GCA effect and in turn, had high per se performance. The SCA effect of hybrids viz., CMS-207A x IB-22 and CMS-108A x GP-6-116 were highly significant for seed yield/plant (g) and other component traits in a desirable direction, indicating that the high performance of these crosses is due to non-allelic gene action.Non-additive gene action is predominant for all the studied characters except days to 50% flowering, plant height (cm) and hull content (%).

The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate six parents and fifteen hybrids through half-diallel mating system to study general and specific combining ability effects and genetic analysis for various yield and yield attributing characters. Six parents viz., Arka Anamika (P1), Thanvi 66 (P2), Villupuram Local (P3), Dhaanya (P4), Ankur 41 (P5) and Varsha Uphar (P6) were crossed in half-diallel fashion at the Plant Breeding Farm, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai University. Resulting fifteen hybrids along with their parents were evaluated for their combining ability. Observations were recorded on single plant basis. The observations were made on characters namely, days to first flowering, plant height at maturity, number of primary branches per plant, number of nodes per plant, number of fruits per plant, number of seeds per fruit, fruit length, fruit girth, single fruit weight and fruit yield per plant. In half-diallel analysis, the variance of the genotype for all the characters were highly significant indicating high genetic variability among the parents studied. The variance due to GCA was higher than the corresponding variance due to SCA for most of the characters except number of fruits per plant, fruit length and fruit girth. The combining ability variance revealed the preponderance of additive gene action for all the characters studied. The parents P1 and P6 were found as good general combiner. Based on the sca effects, the hybrid P1 x P6 considered as the best followed by crosses P2 x P4 and P3 x P4 considered as the better hybrids.

The most promising lines showing highest seed yield with high mean performance for other yield contributing characters were identified as EC-22672, NDLS-164, NDLS-169 and NDLS-205-03-02. The genotypes exhibiting highest mean performance for different characters such as EC-22672 for seed yield per plant, SLS-50, NDL-204, Meera and NDLS-204 for early days to 50% flowering, NDLS-181 for early days to maturity, EC- 41494 for plant height, NDLS-77 for primary branches per plant, NDLS-169 for secondary branches per plant, EC-41404 for number of capsules per plant, EC-41494 for number of seeds per capsule, Shekhar for biological yield, EC-23269 for harvest index and SLS-48 for test weight.

The nature and magnitude of heterosis and combining ability was studied in 18 F1 hybrids involving three CMS lines and six testers using line × tester analysis. The analysis of variance for combining ability of all the traits showed that variances due to treatments, parents, hybrids were highly significant. The line ‘CRMS 32A’ and testers viz. ‘Super rice-8’, ‘R 1099-2569-1-1’ and ‘Jitpiti’ were identified as good general combiners. The significant differences between lines x testers interaction indicates that SCA attributed heavily in the expression of these traits and demonstrates the importance of dominance or non additive variances for all the traits. The hybrid ‘CRMS 32A’/‘R 1099-2569-1-1’ and ‘APMS 6A’/‘Super rice-8’ were promising for grain yield. The magnitude of relative heterosis, heterobeltiosis and standard heterosis were also estimated for different characters. A high degree of relative heterosis was observed for grain yield (20.45- 82.37%) in the hybrids viz., ‘CRMS 32A’/‘Super rice-8’, ‘APMS 6A’/‘Super rice-8’, ‘APMS 6A’/‘Jitpiti’ and ‘CRMS 32A’/‘R 1099-2569-1-1’. While, a higher degree of: heterobeltiosis (13.60 -68.37%) was observed for grain yield in the hybrids viz., ‘CRMS 32A’/‘Super rice-8’, ‘CRMS 32A’/‘R 1099-2569-1-1’, ‘APMS 6A’/’Super rice-8’ and ‘APMS 6A’/’Jitpiti’. A high degree of standard heterosis was observed for grain yield in the hybrid ‘CRMS 32A’/‘R 1099-2569-1-1’. The hybrid ‘CRMS 32A’/ ‘R 1099-2569-1-1’ recorded a high degree of relative heterosis (62.01%), heterobeltiosis (57.35%) and standard heterosis (15.05 and 25.51% over check hybrids, ‘Mahamaya’ and ‘Indirasona’, respectively) that can be tested on yield trials for its further testing over locations.
