Este artigo analisa o processo de produção do mais novo centro de negócios de Salvador - a centralidade da área do Iguatemi. Valendo-se de uma discussão teórica sobre a renda da terra, este trabalho utiliza categorias de análise que possibilitam desvendar o processo de valorização de trechos do solo urbano nessa cidade. Partindo da interpretação de dados oriundos de projetos de planejamento municipal, estatísticas, legislação de uso do solo, notícias da imprensa, este trabalho mostra que essa centralidade surgiu como resultado de um sistema integrado de ações de diferentes agentes governamentais e privados nos últimos 40 anos. O artigo revela que por trás de discursos oficiais de desenvolvimento urbano e de políticas governamentais de planejamento, desenvolveram-se agendas e práticas de um planejamento urbano invisível, que alocou recursos e materializou trabalho numa porção .solo virgem. da cidade do Salvador. Este processo resultou na elevação do valor da renda fundiária dessa área, o que atendeu a interesses privados. Este estudo configura-se num esforço de tornar o invisível visível e fornece algumas bases para o uso de novos e alternativos modelos de interpretação da produção do espaço urbano. Abstract This article analyzes the process of production of the Salvador¥s newest central business district - the Iguatemi Area. Using the Land Income Theory, this paper applies its analytical tools to reveal the process of increasing of land income on this part of the city. Based on the data from municipal planning projects, statistics, land use legislation and press coverage, the paper show s that this new center is a result of an integrated system of different governmental and private agencies actions in the last 40 years. The article reveals that behind urban development official discusses and governmental planning policies, one agenda and practices of invisible urban planning were developed, seeking to allocate resources and work in ìa virgin landî of the city of Salvador. This process resulted in the increasing of the land price, what fulfill real states¥ interests. This study is an effort of turning the invisible visible and an attempt to present new and alternative models to analyses the production of the urban space.

This article reflects the use of urban space by women in urban informal sectors in the city of Guwahati located in North East India. The population influx from across the borders in the aftermath of the partition has huge implications both on polity and on economy of the northeastern states in general and Assam in particular.  Importantly, the urban informal sectors have a sizeable share in terms of its significant contributions towards Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as well as generation of employment opportunities largely. Using a feminist perspective, the research is an attempt to investigate the engagement of women in the informal sector in greater Guwahati. Research findings reveal that the occupations of the women workers are location-specific, that is, the manufacturing sectors (textiles, food preparation, printing and skilled service) are mainly home/shop based production (fixed locations) whereas the service sectors (leisure, caring, elementary construction, elementary sales and cleaning occupation) operate at variable locations (construction sites, street pavements, marketplaces and other various locations). Further analysis shows that the informal sector is highly demand dependent and such demands are in the central business areas of the city, therefore informal sector services (skilled services and elementary services) are found to be located in and around the central areas of Guwahati city. Women operators in the informal sector are attracted to the central business district because of the many advantages that it enjoys relative to other parts of a city. The paper concludes by calling on policy makers and physical planning agencies to evolve more pragmatic strategies for urban development matters in order that urban informal sector activities can be integrated into urban development plans. Finally, further research is called for on how urban planners could redesign the urban space with appropriate consideration of the informal sector operators.

This article describes how employment sub-centres can be identified applying geo-spatial modelling techniques in the context of metropolitan areas in India, and how the development of these employment centres can be linked to the levels of accessibility to labour, access to transport infrastructure as well as land use mix and land use diversity. For the city of Ahmedabad, employment sub-centres are identified for the year 2010, while the progression of employment in retail, commercial and industrial sectors in each of these centres is studied for the period from 1980 to 2010. Definite the signs of sprawl-type development and polarization reversal are observed, including the emergence of new employment sub-centres across the urban area, and the rapid growth of centres further away from the central business district. Retail and commercial sectors have grown exponentially, whereas industrial and manufacturing sector’s growth is stagnant. This development is mixed and heterogeneous, with the growth of the retail and the commercial sectors found to have a significant and positive relation with access to labour and transport infrastructure. These identified patterns of development provide important information to urban planners enabling them to make informed decision, for example, in locating future employment activities, identifying future transit-oriented development nodes, etc.

In today's world, when it is so important to use every piece of land for a particular purpose, both economically and ecologically, identifying optimal land use is a key issue. For this reason, an analysis of the optimal land use in a section of the city of Olsztyn, using the L-system Urban Development computer program, was chosen as the aim of this paper. The program uses the theories of L-systems and the cartographic method to obtain results in the form of sequences of productions or maps. For this reason, the first chapters outline both theories, i.e. the cartographic method to identify optimal land use and Lindenmayer grammars (called L-systems). An analysis based on a fragment of the map of Olsztyn was then carried out. Two functions were selected for the analysis: agricultural and forest-industrial. The results are presented as maps and sequences in individual steps.

A quantifiable basis for developing design guidelines for pedestrian access to light-rail transit (LRT) stations is provided for planners based on observations in Calgary, Canada. Calgary's LRT system, which began operations in 1981, has been operating for long enough for walking patterns to and from its stations to become established. Interviews were conducted with 1,800 peak-hour LRT users about the origins and destinations of their LRT trips. Those who walked to or from a station were asked to point out on a map their approximate origins or destinations. The distances were then measured off the maps. Walking distance guidelines were developed for central business district (CBD), transfer and local stations. Catchment area maps were produced, and the relationship between reported walking time and measured walking distance was calculated. Also compared are the walking distances at LRT stations and the walking distances at bus stops. The research strongly indicates that people walk farther to reach an LRT station than a bus stop. Using bus walking standards would result in an underestimate of LRT walking distances by about half. For the city of Calgary the average walking distance to suburban stations is 649 m with a 75th-percentile distance of 840 m. At CBD stations the average walking distance is 326 m and the 75th-percentile distance is 419 m.

In developing countries, rapid urbanization has created an enormous pressure on land use, infrastructure and transportation. The fast growing ratio of motorized vehicles in urban areas is the main cause of environmental degradation. Almost 80% of the greenhouse gas emission is from vehicles in cities. In the city centers, on-street parking is considered the major cause of traffic congestion. The aim of this study was to evaluate the problems of on-street parking and disorderly parking at Central Business District (CBD) of Hyderabad city. The field survey methodology was adopted to perceive the current traffic problems in the city center and traffic count survey was carried out in both peak and off hours. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics frequency analysis technique with the help of Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings revealed that increasing number of vehicles, on-street parking, improper parking, encroachment, inadequate parking space and poor condition of roads are the main causes of traffic congestion. The study bridges up the research gap of determining public views about on-street parking challenges in the context of Hyderabad, Pakistan and provides statistical results which may equally be adapted by policy makers and transportation planners in order to improve the traffic situation.

This study followed a chronological review of literature over the past 20 years. This was able to show relationship between inclusivity and physical development. A variety of discussions were looked into including dimension of inclusivity, definition of inclusivity, scales for measurement of inclusivity, methodology for appraising inclusivity, protagonists of inclusivity, and antagonists of inclusivity. The intricacy of the correlations between inclusive physical development and life expectations of residents are improved upon so as to show the similarities of these parameters. The analysis of the relevant literature indicated the process of enhancing the urban space and ensuring that all interest and strata of groups in the human composition are adequately cared for by employing the best parameters from the conceptualization of the city development, all the indicators of inclusiveness are well thought out.

There is no consensus regarding the change of magnitude of urban overheating during HW periods, and possible interactions between the two phenomena are still an open question, despite the increasing frequency and impacts of Heatwaves (HW). The purpose of this study is to explore the interactions between urban overheating and HWs in Sydney, which is under the influence of two synoptic circulation systems. For this purpose, a detailed analysis has been performed for the city of Sydney, while considering an urban (Observatory Hill), in the Central Business District (CBD), and a non-urban station in Western Sydney (Penrith Lakes). Summer 2017 was considered as a study period, and HW and Non-Heatwave (NHW) periods were identified to explore the interactions between urban overheating and HWs. A strong link was observed between urban overheating and HWs, and the difference between the peak average urban overheating magnitude during HWs and NHWs was around 8 °C. Additionally, the daytime urban overheating effect was more pronounced during the HWs when compared to nighttime. The advective flux was found as the most important interaction between urban overheating and HWs, in addition to the sensible and latent heat fluxes.

Abstract This article deals with new locative and multimodial media formats, which yield aspects of city histories, re-evaluating their cultural and also their touristic image. The analysis explores the shift from written city guides and building inscriptions to multimodal products (websites, apps) by focussing on two central techniques: the various forms of adressing and the linguistic description for localization, specifically local deicitica. Analogical to the “recipient design” as a basic concept of conversation analysis, the term “spacial design” is chosen to describe the linguistic means, which adjust the multimodal text to the artifacts of urban space, so that a interpretative historic formation will attach to the spacial environment and change the city view. One result of the analysis was the discovery of a mixture of personal and impersonal types of adressing, which shows, that personal adressing joins methods of multiple adressing in multimodal urban communication. The analysis also suggests, that localization practices get diversificated. The new communication products show multiple (“overdetermines”) deictica and phoric anchorages in the urban space, i. e. the deixis is overdetermined as perceptual and imagination-oriented, furthermore deictica are also connected with text elements (by phoric relations). As a discourse grammatical result, the emerged patterns construct an image of nearly automatical unevitaly and depersonalized urban development (e. g. road construction). This impression results from accounts of passive constructions related with instrumental sub-clauses.
