AbstractWe show that there exist steady states of the spherically symmetric massless Einstein–Vlasov system which surround a Schwarzschild black hole. The steady states are (thick) shells with finite mass and compact support. Furthermore we prove that an arbitrary number of shells, necessarily well separated, can surround the black hole. To our knowledge this is the first result of static self-gravitating solutions to any massless Einstein-matter system which surround a black hole. We also include a numerical investigation about the properties of the shells.

Abstract We study an anisotropic, possibly non-homogeneous version of the evolution 𝑝-Laplacian equation when fast diffusion holds in all directions. We develop the basic theory and prove symmetrization results from which we derive sharp L 1 L^{1} - L ∞ L^{\infty} estimates. We prove the existence of a self-similar fundamental solution of this equation in the appropriate exponent range, and uniqueness in a smaller range. We also obtain the asymptotic behaviour of finite mass solutions in terms of the self-similar solution. Positivity, decay rates as well as other properties of the solutions are derived. The combination of self-similarity and anisotropy is not common in the related literature. It is however essential in our analysis and creates mathematical difficulties that are solved for fast diffusions.

The rate of successful identification of peptide sequences by tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) is adversely affected by the common occurrence of co-isolation and co-fragmentation of two or more isobaric or isomeric parent ions. This results in so-called `chimera spectra’, which feature peaks of the fragment ions from more than a single precursor ion. The totality of the fragment ion peaks in chimera spectra cannot be assigned to a single peptide sequence, which contradicts a fundamental assumption of the standard automated MS/MS spectra analysis tools, such as protein database search engines. This calls for a diagnostic method able to identify chimera spectra to single out the cases where this assumption is not valid. Here, we demonstrate that, within the recently developed two-dimensional partial covariance mass spectrometry (2D-PC-MS), it is possible to reliably identify chimera spectra directly from the two-dimensional fragment ion spectrum, irrespective of whether the co-isolated peptide ions are isobaric up to a finite mass accuracy or isomeric. We introduce ‘3-57 chimera tag’ technique for chimera spectrum diagnostics based on 2D-PC-MS and perform numerical simulations to examine its efficiency. We experimentally demonstrate the detection of a mixture of two isomeric parent ions, even under conditions when one isomeric peptide is at one five-hundredth of the molar concentration of the second isomer.

Abstract To study the resolution required for simulating gravitational fragmentation with newly developed Lagrangian hydrodynamic schemes, Meshless Finite Volume method (MFV) and Meshless Finite Mass method (MFM), we have performed a number of simulations of the Jeans test and compared the results with both the expected analytic solution and results from the more standard Lagrangian approach: Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). We find that the different schemes converge to the analytic solution when the diameter of a fluid element is smaller than a quarter of the Jeans wavelength, λJ. Among the three schemes, SPH/MFV shows the fastest/slowest convergence to the analytic solution. Unlike the well-known behaviour of Eulerian schemes, none of the Lagrangian schemes investigated displays artificial fragmentation when the perturbation wavelength, λ, is shorter than λJ, even at low numerical resolution. For larger wavelengths (λ > λJ) the growth of the perturbation is delayed when it is not well resolved. Furthermore, with poor resolution, the fragmentation seen with the MFV scheme proceeds very differently compared to the converged solution. All these results suggest that, when unresolved, the ratio of the magnitude of hydrodynamic force to that of self-gravity at the sub-resolution scale is the largest/smallest in MFV/SPH, the reasons for which we discussed in detail. These tests are repeated to investigate the effect of kernels of higher-order than the fiducial cubic spline. Our results indicate that the standard deviation of the kernel is a more appropriate definition of the ‘size’ of a fluid element than its compact support radius.

Starting from the four component-Dirac equation for free, ballistic electrons with finite mass, driven by a constant d.c. field, we derive a basic model of scalar quantum conductivity, capable of yielding simple analytic forms, also in the presence of magnetic and polarization effects. The classical Drude conductivity is recovered as a limit case. A quantum-mechanical evaluation is provided for parabolic and linear dispersion, as in graphene, recovering currently used expressions as particular cases. Numerical values are compared with the ones from the literature in the case of graphene under d.c. applied field. In particular, the effect of the sample length and field strength on the conductivity are highlighted.
