Abstract Background The Core Physical Exam (CPE) has been proposed as a set of key physical exam (PE) items for teaching and assessing PE skills in medical students, and as the basis of a Core + Cluster curriculum. Beyond the initial development of the CPE and proposal of the CPE and the Core + Cluster curriculum, no additional validity evidence has been presented for use of the CPE to teach or assess PE skills of medical students. As a result, a modified version of the CPE was developed by faculty at the University of Colorado School of Medicine (UCSOM) and implemented in the school’s clinical skills course in the context of an evolving Core + Cluster curriculum. Methods Validity evidence for the 25-item University of Colorado School of Medicine (UCSOM) CPE was analyzed using longitudinal assessment data from 366 medical students (Classes of 2019 and 2020), obtained from September 2015 through December 2019. Using Messick's unified validity framework, validity evidence specific to content, response process, internal structure, relationship to other variables, and consequences was gathered. Results Content and response process validity evidence included expert content review and rater training. For internal structure, a generalizability study phi coefficient of 0.258 suggests low reliability for a single assessment due to variability in learner performance by occasion and CPE items. Correlations of performance on the UCSOM CPE with other PE assessments were low, ranging from .00-.34. Consequences were explored through determination of a pass-fail cut score. Following a modified Angoff process, clinical skills course directors selected a consensus pass-fail cut score of 80% as a defensible and practical threshold for entry into precepted clinical experiences. Conclusions Validity evidence supports the use of the UCSOM CPE as an instructional strategy for teaching PE skills and as a formative assessment of readiness for precepted clinical experiences. The low generalizability coefficient suggests that inferences about PE skills based on the UCSOM CPE alone should be made with caution, and that the UCSOM CPE in isolation should be used primarily as a formative assessment.

The paper has not been peer reviewed. The World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Human Capital initiative has been implemented at Satbayev University (SU), Almaty, Kazakhstan, during the last 2 years. Participating in this effort are Chevron, Eni, Shell, and the Colorado School of Mines (Mines). The complete paper assesses the effectiveness of project components, such as industry guest lectures, summer internships, and program improvement, and provides lessons learned for human-resource-development initiatives. Introduction In most cases, the industry/ university alliance is intermittent, short-term, and underdeveloped. The engagement of three stakeholders, such as government, industry, and the university, is the most-successful model of joint performance. This approach allows all participants to create competitive advantages in the achievement of common objectives. Moreover, the role of governmental agencies is critical alongside professional organizations in facilitating such cooperation.

Abstract Problem: Multiplex immunohistochemistry (mIHC) and multiplexed ion beam imaging (MIBI) images are usually phenotyped using a manual thresholding process. The thresholding is prone to biases, especially when examining multiple images with high cellularity. Results: Unsupervised cell phenotyping methods including PhenoGraph, flowMeans, and SamSPECTRAL, primarily used in flow cytometry data, often perform poorly or need elaborate tuning to perform well in the context of mIHC and MIBI data. We show that, instead, semi-supervised cell clustering using Random Forests, linear and quadratic discriminant analysis are superior. We test the performance of the methods on two mIHC datasets from the University of Colorado School of Medicine and a publicly available MIBI dataset. Each dataset contains numerous highly complex images.

For an industry in which terms like “first ever,” “unparalleled,” “unprecedented,” and “novel” are often over-used to the point of losing their meaning, 2020 hit hard with the true meaning of those words as the COVID-19 pandemic exploded onto the world and disrupted almost everything about life as we knew it. The oil and gas industry, which had begun showing signs of recovery from a generational downturn, was hit particularly hard. Jobs were lost, companies shuttered, and supply chains upended. But the same combination of audacity and ingenuity that has driven the industry for over a century took hold quickly. Oil and gas people love - and need - to network, share ideas, transfer and apply technology, and gather intelligence. So, when in-person conferences, workshops, and tradeshows were suddenly canceled or indefinitely postponed, entities such as the Society of Petroleum Engineers scrambled to use digital technology to take those events online and make them virtual. While not a perfect replacement, virtual online events offer some unique advantages, as SPE technical directors pointed out in their annual roundup. Digitalization, long a controversial topic among many in the upstream sector, is now being called essential by the directors across the six SPE technical disciplines they lead. Automation is mentioned frequently in the directors’ comments as a growing contributor to efficiency and risk reduction. Capital discipline, balance sheet management, and cash flow are seen as crucial, as are collaboration (both internal and external) and value - ranging from core values to value-driven data, to provable, value-based outcomes. Agility and the ability to comply with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria have taken on new importance. So has work - how and where we do it, and how we balance it with other aspects of life. Knowledge dissemination is considered more important than ever. Uncertainty continues to characterize the upstream sector, even more so than before the pandemic, but at least one thing is certain: The work of the industry, and the way in which people who comprise it work, is forever changed. The SPE technical disciplines and the directors who lead them are as follows. According to the news on the foreign tunnellingjournal.com website (tunnellingjournal.com) on May 5, 2020, the Underground Engineering Research Center of Colorado School of Mines and the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recently signed a contract to develop an unprecedented rapid tunneling technology for its “Excavator” project. The research team will conduct a demonstration of tunneling technology at a speed of 366m/h within 15 months.
