In soil, polyacrylamide is a key source of acrylamide because it slowly decomposes into acrylamide. There has been a modest but steady rise in worldwide interest in microbe-mediated acrylamide decomposition as a bioremediation method. A bacterial consortium isolated from the volcanic soil of Mount Marapi, West Sumatra, Indonesia, was able to thrive on acrylamide in this study. Acrylamide-degrading bacteria grew best in the presence of 1 %(w/v) glucose with acrylamide as the sole nitrogen source. Optimum growth occurs in between 300 and 500 mg/L of acrylamide, pH between 6.5 and 8.0, and temperatures between 30 and 35 °C. The consortium can also grow on acetamide as the sole nitrogen source. Toxic heavy metals, such as mercury, silver and copper slowed down the growth of this consortium on acrylamide. This is the first report of an acrylamide-degrading consortium isolated from volcanic soils.

Volcanic activity has a great impact on terrestrial ecosystems, including soil algae in general and diatoms in particular. To understand the influence of volcanoes on the biodiversity of diatoms, it is necessary to explore the flora of these microorganisms in regions with high volcanic activity, which includes the Kamchatka peninsula. During the study on diatoms in the soils of Mutnovsky and Gorely volcanoes of Kamchatka, 38 taxa were found. The Mutnovsky volcano diatom flora was more diverse and accounted for 35 taxa. Eunotia curtagrunowii, Humidophila contenta, and Pinnularia borealis were the dominant species. In the Gorely volcano, only 9 species were identified, with Caloneis bacillum and Pinnularia borealis prevailing in the samples. Overall, the genera Pinnularia and Eunotia were the most diverse in the studied area. The diatom flora of the studied volcanoes comprises mostly cosmopolitan small-sized taxa with a wide range of ecological plasticity. Our data confirm the high adaptive potential of diatom algae and add new knowledge about the ecology and biogeography of this group of microorganisms.

Abstract PurposeThis work assesses changes in soil and vegetation structure associated with grazing intensity (GI) in subhumid grasslands. We conducted the study in the Subandean district of Patagonia, Argentina. Non-degraded Subandean grass steppes have extremely erodible volcanic soils and are valuable grazing ranges. However, nowadays vast portions exhibit a heterogeneous cover that is mostly of cushions shrubs, with big eroded soil patches.MethodsWe selected four study sites along a GI gradient and one grazed-excluded site. Soils, vegetation cover and patches structure were characterised. We took soil samples beneath grass and shrub patches and their interpatches and in undisturbed spots. ResultsSoils in undisturbed spots had the highest chemical fertility. Soils in grazing areas showed high heterogeneity associated with plant life-form and GI. Results also showed that medium and fine sand particles remobilised from bare soil to vegetated patches. Total nitrogen and organic matter increased in the same direction. Grass cover decreased as GI increases, while shrubs cover and total richness increased, until a collapse at the highest intensity. Relative cover of cushion shrubs and bare soil grow steadily with GI. ConclusionsThe fertility island effect was associated with cushion shrubs. Grazing caused cushion shrub encroachment regardless of its intensity. Notwithstanding this, the same disturbance -grazing- which promoted cushions prevalence also favoured the collapse of fertile islands when reached to maximum intensity. Ecosystem services provision from a range management standpoint decreased. However, the increases in richness under moderate GI could represent an enhancement in system functionality.

The sorption behavior of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) in the abundant agricultural volcanic ash-derived soils (VADS) is not well understood despite being widely used throughout the world, causing effects to the environment and human health. The environmental behavior and risk assessment of groundwater pollution by pesticides can be evaluated through kinetic models. This study evaluated the sorption kinetics and 2,4-D sorption–desorption in ten VADS through batch sorption experiments. Differences in the sorption extent for the fast and slow phases was observed through the IPD model where 2,4-D sorption kinetics was controlled by external mass transfer and intra organic matter diffusion in Andisols (C1 ≠ 0). We confirmed from the spectroscopic analysis that the carboxylate group directly drives the interaction of 2,4-D on Andisol soil. The MLR model showed that IEP, FeDCB, and pH×Silt are important soil descriptors in the 2,4-D sorption in VADS. The Freundlich model accurately represented sorption equilibrium data in all cases (Kf values between 1.1 and 24.1 µg1−1/n mL1/ng−1) with comparatively higher sorption capacity on Andisols, where the highest hysteresis was observed in soils that presented the highest and lowest OC content (H close to 0).
