Phase retardance elements such as quarter, half and full waveplates are essential elements in the most of the polarization systems. So, they should be determined precisely. Accurate determination of the phase retardation for these elements are necessary and critical due to its effect on the optical polarization measurements. In this paper we measure two-dimensional phase retardation distribution of half wave plate using four step phase shifting technique for accurate retardance measurements through the whole surface of the wave plate. By using this technique, four images are captured, which are related to different orientation of the azimuth angle of the analyzer, and mathematically analyzed to obtain the phase retardance measurements. The mean value of the phase retardance measurements is 182.57˚ with uncertainty 0.6˚.

This study proposed a new type of optical device with variable transmittance based on the incident angle direction. These devices consist of two liquid crystal devices (LCDs) with a half-wave plate between them. Hybrid aligned nematic (HAN)-type guest-host (GH) LCDs or GH-LCDs with antiparallel alignment of high pretilt angles were used. The use of a half-wave plate allowed for the control of the p- and s-waves. Using these devices, a wide range of transmittances were obtained because no polarizer was used. The newly proposed LCDs have a wide range of applications, including use on buildings, vehicles, and glasses.

We propose a passband-flattened frequency-tunable optical multiwavelength filter with a composite combination of waveplates, which is realized by harnessing a polarization-diversified loop structure. The proposed filter comprises a polarization beam splitter (PBS), two polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) segments of equal length, an ordered waveplate combination (OWC) of a half-wave plate (HWP) and a quarter-wave plate (QWP) before the first PMF segment, and an OWC of a QWP and an HWP before the second PMF segment. The second PMF segment is butt-coupled to one port of the PBS so that its slow axis is oriented at 22.5° for the horizontal axis of the PBS. Based on the filter transmittance derived through the Jones calculus, we found the orientation angle (OA) sets of the four waveplates, which could induce an extra phase shift Φ from 0° to 360° in the passband-flattened transmittance function. From the transmission spectra calculated at the eight selected OA sets, which caused Φ to increase from 0° to 315° by steps of 45°, it was confirmed that the passband-flattened multiwavelength spectrum can be continuously tuned by properly controlling the OAs. This indicates continuous wavelength tunability based on composite OWCs. Then, this theoretical prediction was verified by experimental demonstration.

<p>We present first results from a polarimetric survey of asteroids in the near-infrared J and H bands (1.25 and 1.65 microns, respectively). This survey has been enabled by the newly commissioned WIRC-Pol instrument on the Palomar 5 m telescope.  WIRC-Pol simultaneously senses the four linear polarization components from the target, while using a half-wave plate to beam swap between them. This setup allows us to obtain bandpass polarimetric accuracies better than 0.1% for our targets.  WIRC-Pol also obtains low resolution spectra of each Stokes component, allowing us to investigate the spectropolarimetric properties of our targets as a function of phase.  We show polarimetric phase curves for objects that have been sampled at multiple phases, our initial spectropolarimetric findings, and discuss the results from modeling these observations. </p>

Chiral-selective Tamm plasmon polariton (TPP) has been investigated at the interface between a cholesteric liquid crystal and a metasurface. Different from conventional TPP that occurs with distributed Bragg reflectors and metals, the chiral–achiral TPP is successfully demonstrated. The design of the metasurface as a reflective half-wave plate provides phase and polarization matching. Accordingly, a strong localized electric field and sharp resonance are observed and proven to be widely tunable.
